PFT AGENT RANKINGS

Inspired by an annual agent derby that a certain four-letter-network.com typically publishes on the Friday after the draft, we've decided to put together a more realistic points-based system for determining the agencies who dominated the rookie selection process.

The "other" ranking system awards seven points to each agency that represents a player drafted in the first round, six to each agency that represents a second-rounder, five for a third-rounder, four for a fourth-rounder, three for a fifth-rounder, two for a sixth-rounder, and one for a seventh-rounder.

But since there's a big difference between the first pick and the last pick in a round, we've decided to give 255 points to the agency representing the first player taken in the draft -- and to reduce the points by one for each pick until only one point is given to the agency representing the 255th and final player.

The system is far from perfect.  It rewards a mixture of quantity and quality, but the larger agencies have a clear advantage, since they have more agents in place to handle more players.  And the ranking system doesn't take into account profitability; some agencies might be hard pressed to break even if guys who were trained to be first-rounders unexpectedly fell.

Still, it's more accurate (we believe) than the system that gives the agency representing the last pick in round seven only six points less than the agency representing the No. 1 overall pick.
