NINERS IN THE MIX FOR VICK?

If/when Michael Vick is reinstated to play pro football, plenty of teams won’t be interested. One team that could be interested is the San Francisco 49ers. At Monday night’s “state of the franchise” event, two key officials had opportunities to say “hell no” to Vick. Neither did. “I’m not going to say I’m open or closed,” said coach Mike Singletary, according to the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat. “I’d say it has to be something [General Manager] Scot [McCloughan] and I talk about and feel good about one way or the other. But we have not talked about it at this point in great detail. We’re trying to focus on what we have.” Team president Jed York, the son of Denise DeBartolo York and Dr. John York who has emerged as the primary face and voice of ownership, also was equivocal on Vick. “We’d talk about it,” Jed York said. “If they felt it was right for the team, and convince me and my parents . . . it’s up to them to show that somebody who’s had issues in the past can be a part of this team. But that’s not something we’ve discussed, and I doubt that would happen.” Our guess? It was a calculated trial balloon aimed at gauging local reaction to the possibility of bringing Vick to the Bay Area, but not as a member of the local team with which most assume he’d find a safe haven. That said, we’re talking about San Francisco, folks. If loud protests regarding the presence of a puppy killer are going to happen anywhere, it’s there. And, as we recently pointed out, the economy makes any flirtation with Mike Vick even more risky than it otherwise would be.
