LIONS TO CUT FURREY, ACCORDING TO FURREY

Detroit Lions wide receiver Mike Furrey revealed today that he’s getting a pink slip from new general manager Martin Mayhew as well as a few other players, the Detroit Free Press reports. Furrey said that Mayhew called him Tuesday to give him the bad news that he will be released. “He just said they were calling the guys he was going to release, and I was one of them,” Furrey told the Free Press while attending a Super Bowl even in Tampa. “That was it. Short. Very short.” Furrey didn’t name names, and the Lions aren’t confirming or denying the news. “No players have been officially released,” team spokesman Bill Keenist said. “There have been some discussions with players and the front office as part of the ongoing evaluation process.” Furrey, who was placed on injured reserve with a concussion, has griped about the team’s lack of communication. He related that he had to seek out Mayhew in the team cafeteria to learn that he had been shelved for the remainder of the season. Could that episode have played a role in Furrey’s imminent departure? “I don’t know,” Furrey said. “That’s a man to a man, you know? We were all disgruntled. We all wanted to win. We all felt it could be different. Some guys expressed change to get things on the right track because we wanted to win. “It was kind of like we got pushed to the side. Sometimes that happens. It’s the NFL, and they’re going to bring in people they feel like they can move forward with.”
