GIANTS’ HESITATION CAUSED THEM TO LOSE CAPERS

As Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported on Sunday night, former Pats assistant coach and two-time expansion team head coach Dom Capers has decided to join the Packers as their new defensive coordinator. Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports that the Giants, and possibly several other teams, were chasing Capers. Because the Giants hesitated to meet Capers’ salary demands, he opted to jump to the Packers instead. Per Mort, Capers is still owed $2.6 million from the Fins for 2009. He’ll receive a “discounted” salary in his first season with the Packers, since any money he receives there will only reduce the $2.6 million owed to him by Miami. Next year, Capers will make more than $2 million. Mortensen reports that the Giants will now consider internal candidates to replace former defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, the new head coach of the Rams. But it’s still possible that outside candidates will be replaced. Capers also might have drawn interest from the Ravens, Cowboys, Jets, and possibly the Chiefs.
