After a third-down incompletion on the doorstep of the Bears’ end zone, images of a lifeless Gus Frerotte face down on the FieldTurf reminded us of Steve Young circa 1999.

(I recall that night vividly; I called out to my wife, “Holy crap, I think Steve Young is dead.”  She expressed her concern for his well-being by saying, “Is he the cute one?”)

Replays suggest a far less dire situation.  It appears that Frerotte pulled a hockey-style flop after being hit late from behind by Adewale Ogunleye of the Bears.

That said, a penalty should have been thrown.  Al Michaels of NBC has mentioned that the crew working the game is the only one in the league to not throw a flag for roughing the passer yet this season.

Regardless, what initially looked to be a serious injury to Frerotte might have involved a little bit of acting.

Or perhaps a lot.

The Bears lead, 7-3, in the second quarter.  The game is streaming live at NFL.com.
