After a third-down incompletion on the doorstep of the Bears’ end zone, images of a lifeless Gus Frerotte face down on the FieldTurf reminded us of Steve Young circa 1999.
(I recall that night vividly; I called out to my wife, “Holy crap, I think Steve Young is dead.” She expressed her concern for his well-being by saying, “Is he the cute one?”)
Replays suggest a far less dire situation. It appears that Frerotte pulled a hockey-style flop after being hit late from behind by Adewale Ogunleye of the Bears.
That said, a penalty should have been thrown. Al Michaels of NBC has mentioned that the crew working the game is the only one in the league to not throw a flag for roughing the passer yet this season.
Regardless, what initially looked to be a serious injury to Frerotte might have involved a little bit of acting.
Or perhaps a lot.
The Bears lead, 7-3, in the second quarter. The game is streaming live at NFL.com.

People with concussion injuries have a tendency to be knocked out very easily… Not that Fabio would care about a player health… unless it meant less hits for his site

I’m assuming the entire scene didn’t replay itself.

Yeah, there was play-acting.
But, if a member of the vikes d-line makes that hit (especially Jared Allen) i imagine you would be screaming for fines/suspension.

I’m so glad you brought this up. I’m a Bears fan, and I was genuinely concerned that he had been paralyzed or something. Then on the next series, he’s fine. Not to mention, the replays show the shot as being simply a strong forearm across Frerotte’s back. How does that knock you out?
That said, it definitely was a late hit.

seriously, frerotte should be fined for that flop. he was moving back into ogunleye faster than ogun was moving across. NFL needs to send mssg to QBs that if they are gonna protect them they cant be flopping like that.

It was not a flop. He got hit and fell on the turf hard. Has anyone stepped on that stuff? It’s like concrete. A surprising hit and having your head snap and fall on the turf is not an easy thing to handle.

Hockey style? Huh?
Do you perhaps mean soccer? If not, that’s one of the dumbest things I have read on this site.

Jared Allen is going to be suspended for that flop.
He is nothing more than a cheap shot artist and the truth will come out about Jared Allen being the “real gunman” in New York.
Mark my words. Jared Allen shot Plax.
He will be executed by lethal injection on Wednesday.

You should have said “soccer-style flop.” If you had to use the word hockey, then you should have said “Euro-wimp and Russian hockey stule flop.”

somebody needs to award that crew a medal for not flagging roughing the passer all season. I wish they reffed more of the Giants games.

I’ve seen Elijah Price take harder hits than that and stay up!!
Give Gus an award, I haven’t seen acting like that since Heath Ledger in the Dark Knight.

I am a big Vikes fan but have to admit that it was a flop. It was good to drop to the ground to draw a penalty but he way oversold it afterwards. If they don’t throw the flag right away they aren’t going to.
Thing is the D lineman did go up and give him a push. You aren’t supposed to even touch him. Gus flopped but it probably still should be a call.
