Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter likes to run his mouth, and today that cost him.
The Miami Herald reports that the NFL fined Porter $7,500 for verbally abusing the opposition during Sunday’s game against the Patriots.
Porter’s trash talk apparently contributed to tempers flaring on the field when Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder and Patriots offensive tackle Matt Light got into a fight. Crowder and Light were both ejected and both fined $15,000.
Porter was previously fined $20,000 for criticizing the officials after the Dolphins played the Texans.
Another Dolphin, guard Justin Smiley, was also fined as a result of actions on the field against the Patriots. The Herald reports that Smiley was fined $5,000 for a chop block.

My god this league is just pathetic. Goodell’s going to sterilize all the appeal and passion right out of the game. Worst commissioner ever. I hope he realizes soon that he’s hurting the game far more than he’s helping…..same goes for the appeal of the NFL to the fans.

wow. so is this precedent for every time you see someone in another guy’s face after a play jawing at him, he’ll get a fine? or is this just because mean ol’ joey was yelling at the poor patriot players?

Fining players for running their mouths when nothing else happened due the comments?
Goodell - please pull your head out and realize this has been going on since the NFL started.
“Excuse me Mr. Offensive Tackle may I talk to you about your breath or heritage?” Sheesh how sissified can the NFL get?

Come on Florio, give the Porter bashing a rest. Like he was the only on trash talking. I think the Patriots are descending the other side of the hill and have to play dirty to get the job done anymore.

Hey Joey, a word of advice - you better watch out you don’t continue to get fined and lose your salary.
The only reason Christy stays with you is because of the money. If you keep this up Christy and my kids Jayle and Jasmine, and Jacob will leave you… oh yeah, and don’t forget about Joey Jr. (you didn’t actually think Christy named him after YOU did you!? ROFL!)
Lucky for you the rest of the fans here think its fair game to trash talk about players wives and kids just like you do.

Man, with so many players getting fined, you should create a “player fined watch” with standing keeping track of all those players who got fined and how much.
You know, just like the turd watch.
Because I would like to see who got the most fined and the most totals.

Hey MDS,
That’s not what he got fined for. Or let’s just say he had a very short leash going into the game, I believe.
I saw Porter making some very inflamatory comments about having been cheated out of “three Super Bowl Rings” playing against the Pats while in Pittsburgh. Basically he was alluding to Spy-Gate.
He made the remarks on tape to ESPN’s Keyshawn Johnson, and they aired on Sunday morning. I’m guessing Porter was under very close scrutiny after questioning the integrity of the Supe three times on ESPN earlier in the day.
Does anybody think not..?

“Verbally abusing an opponent”.
Call me Donovan, but I didn’t even know they had that rule.
Anybody ever hear of a ref penalizing a player for that before?
You have to dig deep to find a rule like that.

How can anyone justify anything Joey Porter does or says?! He has obviously crossed a line and no one here needs to know exactly what he said to know that the line was crossed. All you had to do was look at Sparano’s when he called Porter off the field and that selfish idiot refused his head coach’s orders. When your actions hurt the team then you really should STFU. Did the ends justify the means for this moron? Was his team better off for his trash talking-NO. Yet he did all week long and kept on doing it. Regardless of what Goodell is doing at this point, how can you as fans be ok with “trash talking” when it hurts your team? And I’m not talking about this fine-I’m talking about the SECOND personal foul on the field. After one, regardless of whether it was warranted or not(and it probably was since he wouldn’t shut up all week with cameras on- you can only imagine what he said with them not directly on him), the second one is inexcusable and just plain stupid and selfish. Maybe Goodell is doing you a favor if this actually shuts this douche up so he can focus more on his on field actions and live up to his potential. And spare me the “Pro-Bowl caliber player” crap-how may tackles did Porter have in the most important game of their season last Sunday-1? In significant games with major playoff implications, a pro bowl player lets let his play speak for himself and not his mouth.

You slippery-slope people are hysterical. Obviously, both Porter and Crowder were crossing the line to an excessive degree….and it’s a GOOD THING the league is trying to keep personalities and tempers in check. It’s not pussifying the league, it’s protecting it’s respectability. If you want to watch a game that has little to no respect left, go watch the NBA. Personally, I’d rather the sport not devolve into having an atmosphere where anything can be said to anyone at any time, with no retribution. You really think a fine wouldn’t be forth coming if Matt Light had dropped the N-word on either of those two guys? Hell yeah there’d be a fine, and I guaran-damn-tee you’d be happy about the fine, and would be crucifying Light and the Patriots organization as a whole, for their incredibly disrespectful behavior. You don’t know what Porter said, the league does, the league decided it was out of line, accept it.

I’d sooner watch the NFL of the 80s. And I’m not even 25 yet. Talk trash? Someone cuts your legs out next play, leave it all on the field. NFL network celebrates old players who would leave it all on the field.. and the rivalries that would develop because of them. Now talking trash gets you fined, personal fouls gets your fined, commenting on the officals.. oh you know thats getting fined. Brutal. I’d sooner come here and read made up stories than crap like this.

espnsux says “Live up to his potential”
14.5 sacks isn’t potential enough?
The league IS being pussified. These fines may not be good examples but there are plenty of them. Legal hits that were the norm ten and twenty years ago are now resulting in fines. Thirty years ago, these hits were tame. So, yes, the league is pussified and filled with manicured babies who cry when they take a hit or someone says “Yo Mama.”
Respectability is one thing, but this is not cricket. Maybe we should watch rugby. That’s a man’s game. No pads and no-one cries when someone hits them.
And FuttBucker - everyone knows you’re a Pat homer so why don’t you just make every entry “What I said last time.”

Ha, Matt Light literally grabbed Crowders hair and hammer punched him him repeatedly. All he got was a fine. That is a clear cut suspension. I’ve never been big on spy gate or conspiracy theories but it comes a time now when it is very clear the Patriots are not subject to the same rules the rest of the league are. Verbal obuse? Seriously? It’s the NFL not the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. verbal abuse that’s a joke. Goodell is the face of the bad officiating, heavy fines and “pussification” currently taking place in the game our country loves. These things will turn the average fan away and disapoint the real fan. Goodell’s first season as commish saw the insane roughing the passer calls. He’s overseen the Spy gate tape destruction debacle. Now we have the over fining and horrible officiating. If he doesn’t watch out we’re going to have a labor strike in a few years. Maybe he’s in over his head. by the way…how much money did Vegas make on that Polomalu fumble not fumble return?
