With Sunday’s stunning win at Tennessee, the Jets have thrust one of their players squarely into the MVP discussion.
(We considered pulling a smart-ass move here, such as naming Vernon Gholston or Mike Nugent as the potential MVP candidate. But we decided not to do it, since so many Jets fans think we, sniff, hate their team.)
Brett Favre is the guy to whom we refer, and we make the case in our Ten-Pack for SportingNews.com.
If nothing else, Favre’s arrival to the conversation might stall talk that Kurt Warner will win the thing. Here’s the official PFTV take on Warner’s candidacy.

It’s a 4 qb race in my opinion.
Favre
P. Manning
E.Manning
K.Warner
Warner might have the pretty #’s but Ryan Leaf could put up great #’s throwing to that trio against that division.
It will be hard to ignore any of those Deep South Louisiana/Mississippi boys. All three of them could come home with it.
If the Colts win out, or finish strong, it will be hard to ignore Peyton Manning for the award. Hell even Bill ” I love Tommy” Simmons gave Peyton his vote of confidence last week for doing what he has done after what he has faced.

Chad Pennington is …, by far the MVP of the NFL,…
Without him the dolphins are 0-11 this season.
Therefore in some ways Favre is the MVP…because without him the Dolphins wouldnt be so good

Please — Most Valuable Player in the entire NFL? He still throws the ball up and prays someone in the right uniform catches it. The NFL needs to stop shoving this self-centered jerk down our throats. The Jets still stink with him. He hardly made the team better by being on it. Which is kinda a consideration when determining the MVP.

Haynesworth deserves it. Sure they lost to the Jets and their crappy uniforms. Every dog has his day. Case in point - “They Built This City” by Starship hit number 1. Favrevre can win MVP next year.

Favre has too many INT’s to be considered. Try offering up some credit to the team around him, he’s getting alot of help from good defense and Leon Washington. If not for the strength of the run game Favre wouldn’t look near as good. At least Warner is doing it with virtually no running game. The award is Warner’s to lose.

Well, their record speaks for itself. Favre brought something that was missing to the Jets- relevance. He single handedly gave that team the confidence to play at a higher level, higher than they ever had before. And he’s playing at a high level himself. He’s definitely deserving of MVP consideration.

LiveNBreath you are retarded. Favre “hardly” made the Jets better? They won 4 games last year. They have already won 8 and are second in the AFC only behind the team they just destroyed. You clearly know nothing.

You make a good point drian. In addition to that, there’s Steve Breaston. There really wasn’t much of a drop off when Boldin was out, so obviously Warner’s doing something right. He even makes Jerheme Urban looks good some weeks too.

It may not have happened Sunday, it may not have happened the past few weeks, but inevitably Favre will get bored with this conversative gameplanning and decide he wants to have some “fun” out there.
I’m not psychic, but I can see into the future pretty clearly. He’ll again start making mind bogglingly stupid decisions, INT’s and devastating defeat(s) will follow, culminating with a first round playoff exit, presumably on their…er, the Giants home field. MVP talk will evaporate, save for the Peter King, Kornheiser, et al ballwashing jocksniffers. NY media scrutiny will intensify, Favre will want out of NY, and the NYJ will continue to be the sleazy, petty, vindictive underaching disgrace of an organization we’ve come to expect.

Favre is most deserving.
He wins football games. He is the greatest of all time.
Of course no one else is more valuable to their team.

Favre will end up with 22 picks at the very least and will fade in a huge way. His ego is beyond words right now. Watch his press conferences from here on out. He will use 2000 words or more to any question, the answeres will ramble and be complete nonsensical and his performance will drop in a huge way. This guy is going to implode like he always does and always has. Watch.

Jeff Garcia has to be mentioned in this conversation. He’s a top 5 passer and his team has the best record of those. Just saying…Favre belongs in there.

I think Chad Pennington should be considered for MVP. He was the only major offseason addition(besides Jake Long) for a team that was 1-15 last year. Even after yesterday, the Dolphins are still a serious playoff contender, which I think is remarkable. I will definitely give a lot of credit to Sparano, but Chad has clearly been the big difference. Besides the influence he has had on that clubhouse, his stats are very solid, (11 TD, 6 INT)and he is on pace to throw for almost 4,000 yards, which is really good considering that you always hear that he cant throw the ball more 10 yards down field and his starting wide receivers are (were) Greg Camarillo and Ted Ginn. Please name someone who has done more with less than Chad. If the Dolphins make the playoffs I think he deserves the award.
That being said, I do not think Favre should be seriously considered for that award. He has played really good, probably better than most people expected him to, but anyone who has seen the Jets play know that Kris Jenkins is the Jets MVP this year, therefore making Favre the league MVP seems a bit ridiculous.

The Favre critics obviously haven’t watched the Jets much this season. Most of Favre’s picks came early on when he didn’t know the offense that well and was trying to do too much by improvising.
And while the running game is definitely strong, he is completing 70% of his passes and makes throws that keep drives alive. The power running game didn’t help him on 3rd and 15 in OT against the Pats. He can still make most of the throws he needs to make and has looked very sharp dissecting defenses this season.
If Brett really cares about his legacy he’ll keep this going because this is the only way he’ll ever win a Super Bowl.

There really isn’t a standout statistics guy on an elite team. When you think of “MVP”, does Kurt Warner really come to mind? Maybe by default? And if he’s “default” then it opens it up.
So you look at quality of play and impact on team. Warner’s in the weakest division in football and consistently loses to upper tier teams like the Jets, Giants, etc.
meanwhile, Favre is leading a 4-12 team to the second best record in the AFC, and just carved up the best team in the entire league.
there’s no breakaway winner this year, but Favre is certainly MVP worthy this season under the true definition of “Most VALUABLE player” to the league.

I love it how suddenly Florio tries to write a serious, non-opinionated article about Favre in the Sporting News. We all know you are jealous of him, probably due to your short-man complex.
You could definitely make an argument that Kris Jenkins and Leon Washington are candidates to be the JETS team MVP’s this year. But, if either one of those guys gets hurt, the Jets still have a chance to win. Granted, losing Jenkins would be huge…but if the team lost Favre, the season would be OVER. Favre brings way too much to that team (play-making ability, leadership, savvy veteran knowledge, etc. etc.).
Obviously I’m a huge Favre fan, but if I had to choose MVP right now, it would go in order:
Favre
Warner
P. Manning
E. Manning
Rothlesiberger
Brees
Romo
Cassell
If Brees gets the Saints into the playoffs, he could shoot past everyone…if Warner wins a big/tough road game, then maybe he holds on…but Warner couldn’t beat the Giants at home…and Favre just beat the Titans on the road. Warner has better stats. Favre plays in a much tougher division. Tough call…
