The Colts used an eight-play, 37-yard drive to take the final 1:30 off the clock, and Adam Vinatieri kicked a 51-yard field goal as time expired.
Said Vinatieri, who shanked a chip shot when the Colts lost at San Diego last year, “You can’t really change last year’s outcome, obviously, and that kick will stay with me a long time. At least it was nice to get back out there and have another shot at it. Making that kick was pretty sweet.”
Vinatieri’s holder, Hunter Smith, said he could tell it was good as soon as he heard the sound of Vinatieri’s foot hitting the ball.
The Chargers remain two games behind the Broncos in the AFC West.
Said Chargers RB LaDainian Tomlinson, “We’ve been in this position over and over. Every time Denver loses and gives us an opportunity, we lose. That’s been the kind of season it’s been for us.”
Chargers coach Norv Turner regretted the late timeout he took.
After Chargers FB Mike Tolbert was injured, Jacob Hester had three catches, including his first career touchdown.
The Colts have won four straight games by a total margin of 16 points.
Colts RB Joseph Addai had his longest run in almost two years.
Could the Colts go from 3-4 to 12-4?

The Chargers season effectively ended with a swing of Vinatieri’s leg.

No. The Chargers season ended on Hochuli’s call in Denver. The would be AFC West division leaders if that call was right. The Chargers and Broncos should both be 5-6 with the Chargers holding the tiebreaker. This is just how important that blown call was.

What was up with that 4th down review? That felt like the longest break ever, and the Colts are not the team I like to give time to ponder a critical play. I wonder if Peyton with time running would have pulled off such a nice pass on 4th and inches. Probably would have snuck for the first down, but time would still have ticked away and nowhere as close as they got with the pass.
I guess I just feel a bit bad for the Chargers to keep losing in the last seconds with officials involved in some way or another…

Not exactly. They’re only 2 games behind Denver and there’s certainly no guarantee that Denver will win the division.

With 7 losses, even if they manage to win out, would anyone believe that they could contend in a playoff game?

That timeout was one of the dumbest moves I’ve seen from a coach in years. The timeout effectively lost them the game and likely ended any shot at the playoffs.
Way to go Norv!

Given how close most of those losses were, yeah if they were lucky enough to make it into the playoffs they could win at least a first round game. They would get a home game for the first round. That makes all the difference in the world.
They did beat the Patriots and the Jets. So, they do have some potential.

He probably called the time out just to see what they wanted to do. They must have been considering going for it on fourth down otherwise there would be no point in calling the time out.
The Charger defense let them down giving up huge chunks of yardage. I don’t know why the defense isn’t being more physical. Rivera needs to get that defense into shape quickly.

I think the way the season has been going, there was no other choice but to go for that 4th down. They are at a point, where they need to take control of their season and play to WIN. Don’t put the ball in the Peyton’s hands and expect your porous defense to stop them. And, especially don’t give the officials more opportunities to screw you.

the season hasn’t ended yet , but if it does it’s because LT is a mental midget this season, ever since the injury in indy he’s been a scared rb afraid of contact
it’s sad to see, he’s gone.

That time out was absolutely brutal, friggin horrendous!
He should be canned just for that alone, never mind all the other mistakes.
