In an interview aired last hour during ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown, Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter teed off on the Patriots and the cheating scandal that was disclosed last year.
The following partial transcript has been forwarded to us by ESPN.
Keyshawn Johnson: Let’s switch to the New England Patriots game. Is there a big difference in that rivalry of the Miami Dolphins, New England, and Pittsburgh-New England?
Joey Porter: Yeah, it’s a big difference . . . but I still got hate from when I was at Pittsburgh.
Keyshawn: Why?
Porter: Because I got cheated.
Keyshawn: Cheated in what?
Porter: In both of them AFC championship games.
Keyshawn: What did they do?
Porter: Come on, man. They’ve been videotaping for years, man. You cannot sit up there and honestly tell me if it wasn’t working, why was he doing it so much? You’re not going to sit up there and tell me if I’m a quarterback in my headset I know where the blitz is coming. I know where my hots and stuff is at before it happens. I know what play you’re running on defense. All you got to do is be in the right position . . . just catch the ball.
Keyshawn: So you feel they were cheating. You don’t feel they were just the better team?
Porter: What? No, no, no, no. Two times we could have blown them people out easily. They say, oh, he’s so smart. This is the best brainstorming coach. Yeah, because he’s cheating. He got caught. . . . If it wasn’t so bad, why did you destroy the tape so fast? . . . We want to see the tapes. When you get rid of evidence like that, there was something in it they didn’t want everybody to see.
Keyshawn: So you take it personally?
Porter: Man. . . . That’s my dynasty. You know what I mean? I could be sitting up here with three rings. This is the way I look at it. I played three AFC Championships — won one, lost two. . . . Yeah, to me just like they want to put an asterisk on everything else, yeah, I don’t care what they say. They have an asterisk on them. . . . At the same time, people that played against them on the field, we know. Who they got on that team beside Tom Brady? It’s not like they’ve got a gang of dogs over there. . . . They have a bunch of all right guys. You know what I mean? Not no just real dogs. They’ve got some beasts on the D line and stuff like that but . . . .
Keyshawn: You can’t possibly think, three Super Bowls. . . . You think they cheated in every single one of them games?
Porter: Man, I’m going to tell you, I’m taking that to the grave, man. I don’t care what nobody say. . . .
Keyshawn: What about last year? . . . All the glamour, glitz and glamour, 16-0. You think they were cheating then?
Porter: I don’t know. You know, I don’t know. . . . Maybe he found a new way to do it or not to tell you the truth. The boy cold, man. He showed us, he’s cold. The boy cold, man. Hey, the boy cold, man. He showed us man, he cold. . . . I don’t trust him.
In fairness to the Patriots, numerous news reports have indicated that other teams and coaches videotaped defensive coaching signals over the years. And a 1967 article from Sport magazine made it clear that spying and skullduggery is a fact of life in the NFL.
Also, there is no rule against stealing defensive signals without the use of electronic recording equipment. Now that a defensive player has a radio receiver in his helmet, defensive signals are less important than they used to be.

The Pats scored two special teams TDs and only 10 offensive points in the first AFC Championships and 41 points and caused 4 turnovers to the Steelers’ offense in the second AFC Championships. How does Porter explain that?

If any one of us played on a team that got beat by a team who was proven to be cheating during that timeframe, we’d hold a grudge too.

I think that joey is the only one that is willing to say anything still…. The Pats got off easy. If stealing signals didnt work why would they do it? Just like anything in the NFL, if it didnt help win games why would they waste their time? I think this is a hugh cover up! I’m still disappointed that Roger wants to come down hard on all the play but, give billicheat a nearly free pass…

“In fairness to the Patriots…” ???
The Patriots were ones stupid and arrogant enough to keep cheating after the NFL warned them multiple times (and the other 28 teams, plus the Raiders, Bengals, and Lions). And they were stupid enough and arrogant enough to do it against their former defensive coordinator, who knew what had been going on.
But yeah, with all due respect to Mike Tice, Joey Porter is a meathead.

I still think Roger Goodell regrets making such an example of the Patriots for what a lot of teams were doing….they were stupid to be so blatant about it, yes….but when he punished them so severely, everyone assumed it was a bigger deal than it was.
If Tagliabue had to handle the situation, I doubt people would even be talking about it anymore.

Actually, numerous former players said they did it all the time….oh, and Jimmy Johnson as well. http://www.bostonherald.com/blogs/sports/patriots/index.php/2008/02/23/jimmy-johnson-thinks-spygate-is-overblown/

I wonder how many Seattle fans want to put an aterisk on Pittsburgh’s Super Bowl victory. Talk about cheating. Ticky tack bs calls all over the Seahawks capped by a diving non-touchdown by Ben Rothlisberger. What garbage.

The Patriots are cheaters.
Yes
Deny all you want. Try to gloss over it any way you want.
Cheating Bastards. Make a 6th round 180 lb quarterback look like a hall of famer.
Heck, Flutie did well there. Now Florence Jean Cassel berry is throwing for 400?
Sounds like Denver before chop blocking was a penalty.

Florio - don’t you know that Porter can’t read?
Beyond that, when there’s guys like CaptainFantastik who show how stupid they are by spouting off not knowing that Jimmy Johnson indicted himself and a half dozen other teams for taping signals, how can we expect an idio like Porter to know any better?
I love Spygate for showing what idiots fans and players in the rest of the NFL actually are. CptFantastik, Porter, and others keep proving me right.

Captain Fantasitk - people are LOLing all right - just at you. I think that word “none” doesn’t mean what you think it means, especially when you’re staring a report in the face that documents “cheating” in the NFL going back 50 years and coaches like Jimmy Johnson documenting the same thing in the modern era.

K..I love Porter, love the Steelers, but in ‘01:
1. Blocked FG returned for TD
2. Punt returned for a touchdown
3. Porter dropped an easy INT that he easily would have scored on.
I’m no math wiz, but if you and your teammates take care of business that day Joey, you win that game 24-10, rather than lose it 24-17.

Yeah, you’re smart Joey. They were clearly cheating when they skunked your dolphins twice last year. Oh do those games not count?
the funniest part of that transcript is that Keyshawn doesn’t even seem to believe he’s serious and can’t believe what the numbskull is staying.
31-21 New England as of Posting. Nice defense Joey, but I’m sure it’s because Cassel is cheating.

The NFL had to destroy the evidence. No way they could admit that the Pats cheated in their super bowls*. It would have destroyed the NFL, not to mention the loss of money NFL brings in. All they could do is sweep it under the carpet.

Another Seattle whiner. Steelers won that SB by 11 points. And Steelers have been jobbed by refs for years. Hell, in that year itself Indy got two horrible calls in their favor, especially the overturned Polamalu INT which would have ended the game with 4 minutes to go. And pittsburgh still won that game, albeit by virtue of being this close to going to OT.
And Pittsburgh generally has gotten jobbed in the worst of times, during the end of games like the ridiculous running into the kicker penalty which gave TN a second chance in OT a few years ago.
Or what about the ridiculous penalty on Aaron smith in the 3rd Q against the Pats which led to a drive being alive and gave Pats their only TD in a 3rd quarter totally dominated by Pittsburgh making a furious comeback making a score on every single drive during Big Ben’s first AFC championship where he and the Steelers stunk up the joint in the first half. That wasnt a ticky tacky call. That was a WRONG call.
What about the wrong NON Call on JAX in the last AFC playoffs when Gerrard scored on a 4th and short?
So Steelers finally get the benefit of mostly ticky tacky calls(with the only wrong call having no effect on the game) in one SB and seattle whines about it for years? Seattle lost by 11 points. Seattle was the victim of ticky tacky calls early on and one in the second half. There was one wrong call in the second half on Hasselback that added 15 yards. Boo hoo. Steelers have been victimized by such calls in a bunch of games.
Remember the two phantom pass interference calls on the Steelers when they played Denver during their first SB run with Elway? One was ticky tacky and the other was flat out wrong. That pretty much cost them a big lead in the first half.
Seattle had plenty of opportunities to make up for the ticky tacky calls.

Another Seattle whiner.”
It’s not just Seattle fans, bud. Most impartial observers thought that SB was a joke.
And, anyone with a long enough attention span could probably suggest that part of the reason for the horribly one-sided officiating may have had something to do with the massive sanctions Mike Holmgren ran into that season for criticizing the officials.
