Browns G.M. Phil Savage couldn’t have picked a more inopportune time to send a profane e-mail message to a fan who had been heckling him. With the Browns reportedly talking to Bill Cowher and with Cowher virtually certain to want full control over the team’s football operations, Savage would almost certainly get the shoe.
The problem is that Savage received an extension after last season’s resurgence, and he’s now signed through 2012. If, as some believe, he’s making $3 million per year, a buyout would cost owner Randy Lerner $12 million.
But maybe it wouldn’t. Though we haven’t seen the specific language of Savage’s contract, typing “f@#* you” to a fan likely would permit the Browns to fire Savage “for cause,” thereby extinguishing any responsibility to him for ongoing payments.
Savage would have the ability to file a grievance with the league office, but would he? Regarded as mild-mannered (at all times except when sending the e-mail in question), Savage might not want to fight the issue.
Another possibility would be for Lerner to offer Savage $3 million to walk away, and for Savage to accept it.
For more on the lessons to be learned from the Savage e-mail, we give you a couple minutes of PFTV.

No, damnit. Cowher, the Browns blow chunks. Where you really want to go is Minnesota.

Florio- what source can substantiate that if Cowher were hired, Savage would have to go? The Browns would be foolish to let a guy go that can spot talents in the 5th round of the draft such as Jerome Harrison who if you haven’t been paying attention lately, may end up being a very very good RB sooner rather than later.
Savage may have had the best 1st round draft in the past 10 years when he snagged Joe Thomas and Brady Quinn. Savage is signed through 2012 so I don’t think Cowher would want to come in a demand the firing of a solid GM. Actually Cowher would most likely want his expertise around to help make personnel decisions. Your speculation makes absolutely no sense Flo.

Living in the area, and hearing Savage’s radio appearances, and very, very infrequent pressers… I’m not sure about the mild-mannered part. He may interact with his peers in that way, but he can be quite testy when it comes to the press or fans. He’s pretty much had a “f@#* you” bent to his attitude almost since he arrived here.
Aside from that, there have been rumblings from many in the media… I’ve heard him called a snake many times, going back to his battle with John Collins. Granted, it may need to be taken with a grain of salt, since he avoids the media to a great extent and there may be some sour grapes there… but it just seems consistent with the public image he often presents.
I think the guy is a darn good talent evaluator, and for that reason, I’d hate to see him go. He has put together a very good nucleus of talent here. Unfortunately, though, he has proven deficient in too many other areas, and it’s time to correct that.

Who says Quinn is any good??? I haven’t seen anything yet to suggest he is. So he had a like 40% completion percentage against the Bills… I coulda done that!
Quinn sucks!!!

The guy said the F word to a fan (with text, not even in person). I’ve sat front row for 49er games for 6 years, I have heard players and coaches say far worse. This is atleast the fifth story you guys have done on this…

personaly, i’m all for a gm, owner, etc. who tells his opposers “f$#* you”. this isn’t pop-warner, it’s a cut-throat business. i would also love to have cower on my side, but not at the expence of losing savage. romeo has been riding the coat tails of parcells, and bellicheck for far too long. he says he wants to make the nfl a positive experience for the players. oh, give me a break. this is a job, so do it to the level you’re expected to, or get out. for crying-out-loud, you’re being paid a kings ransom to entertain us.

Phil Savage and Romeo Crennel are in serious trouble and they
both know it. General Manager Phil Savage should have traded
one of their two QB’s when he had the chance. Either QB.
may be good enough to lead the team if they could stop teams
with their defense. Romeo Crennel ran the defense with N.E.
or was he just a guy who took direction from Belichick. Well
maybe he didn’t learn anything. The Browns can’t play defense.
All this “F” word email stuff is just a frustrated General Mgr.
who realizes his job is on the line. Savage should have moved
one of the QB’s for some defensive players.

Lerner can afford to do whatever the hell he wants. He’s one the top 5 wealthiest owners in the league. $12mil is like $12 bucks to him.
If a bidding war did break out for Cowher the Browns are in a position to outbid everybody.
