Rams offensive lineman Richie Incognito isn’t troubled by the possibility that the Edward Jones Dome will be filled with plenty of Bears fans when the two teams square off on Sunday.
“At least someone in the dome is yelling,” Incognito said Thursday.
“We know how our fans feel about us, and that’s fine. It’s nice to have the other fans here. At least they cheer.”
Well, Richie, the problem is that you and your teammates really haven’t given the hometown fans anything to cheer about. So in this era of a bad economy, Blu-Ray DVD, and societal ADD, it’s not all that surprising for folks who might have cared about the local NFL team when it was 0-0 are having a hard time keeping their interest level up when the franchise is closer to 0-10 than 10-0.
After following an 0-4 start with a two-game winning streak over the Redskins and the Cowboys, the Rams have lost another four in a row. At 2-8 and five games out of first place in the division with six to play, it’s over. So, naturally, the locals have detached emotionally.
It’s not supposed to happen that way in the modern NFL. Teams are supposed to cluster around .500, and as many of them as possible are supposed to be alive for a postseason berth for as long as possible.
This year, there are a bunch of teams who are, for all practical purposes, done . . . and it isn’t even December.
In the NFC, the 3-7 49ers, the 2-8 Rams, the 2-8 Seahawks, and the 0-10 Lions are already out of it, practically if not mathematically. In the AFC, the 3-7 Texans, the 2-8 Raiders, the 1-9-1 Bengals, and the 1-9 Chiefs are finished.
That’s eight out of 32 teams — a fourth of the league — dead in the water with more than a third of the season left to be played. So it’s good that the Rams are hosting this week one of the 24 teams still in contention.
Otherwise, no one would be there at all.

florio,
the cardinals are 7-3 and can possibly clinch a playoff spot this weekend and thats with a win and some help from other teams.
and you might as well just add buffalo to this list as well bc again (as a diehard bills fan) we’re not winning 10 or 11 games and with the cardinals likely getting a playoff berth, bills fans will have the endure the fact that only the lions have a longer playoff drought than us… dear god.

“Archie I cannot see through my hood”
“Edna will ya stifle yourself, were trying to be incognitas.”
Nothing to do with the story but a top 10 family guy scene.

I hate it when pro players whine about the fans not cheering, if you really care then play better. People will come see you and cheer if you don’t suck. So stop crying and earn your million dollar pay check, at least you don’t have to pay several 100 bucks to get a decent seat, you get paid to ride the pine.

i wonder if incognito knows that the economy is in the toilet ( which of course athletes and completely uneffected by ) and nobody wants to waste good money to watch a horrible team “play” football…if hes that concered maybe he should buy tickets, with the money from one game check, to the game and give them out to put any rams fans that havent given up on them yet

This attitude probably comes straight from Haslett. He was very disrespectful to Saints fans when his teams began to fail. He never understood why fans boo. Among the mild things that he said was “I guess it’s different down here”. In my opinion he doesn’t have temperment to be a head coach. He is emotionally very up and down and his teams play exactly that way. For instance, the Saints had a number of big victories against some outstanding Ram teams (Greatest Show on Turf teams) but would then lose against average to bad teams in the following weeks. The Saints made the playoffs in an emotionally charged first year under Haslett but never again. They even failed to win one of four games against four losing teams in the last four weeks of 2001. Winning one of those four games would have put them in the playoffs. He couldn’t get it done. The Rams would be better off looking elsewhere for a coach. Hasletts better than Linehan but still not good enough. In fact, part of the reason Linehan was fired is because of Hasletts defense.

So basically, Florio, you’re condoning people being bandwagon fans and only supporting teams when they’re good. That’s awesome. I mean c’mon, it’s not like the Rams have been terrible for a decade, they won 9 games 2 years ago.

What an @$$hole this guy is. He doesnt deserve to start for a team. I watched that Redskins Rams game, and on the last play of the last drive, after the third down he got in a shoving match with an opposing player (which had been brewing the whole drive)rather than just keeping his mouth shut and hands to himself and letting his team take an easy FG for their first win, he popped the guy in the head after the play and continued to mouth off, drawing a flag that forced his team on the last play of the game to hit a 53 yard FG after a 15 yd penalty. He obviously at that point realized his ego was much bigger the team, and almost single handedly blew it (if not for a great kick from Josh Brown). And you could see it coming the whole drive, he had gotten flagged earlier for the same thing. And now he has a problem with the fans of his horrible team? Seriously, what an @$$hole

Well said. If you want fans to come and spend money on over priced tickets and mercandise, at least give them a product worth paying for. A crappy team is not it especially when most people are worried about their jobs and their mortgages. Its called reality maybe Incognito should join it. These owners just expect their fans to continue to pay out all this money as if there is nothing else going on in this world. Its plain selfish and ignorant

Hey Richie, who wants to pay money to see you make an ass out of yourself with stupid ‘emotional’ penalties? It is hard enough to watch you guys choke on TV, let alone pay to see in person.

Fans that bag their team, don’t cheer or become fans of another team aren’t fans at all. I’ve been an Oakland fan for years and I’ve seen it all happen. After a slump when the team picks back up and you were there the whole time is the best feeling as a fan.
Incognito rules.

Yeah, its a blast to spend 2 hours in traffic to get there and 4 hours to get home to see a shitty team stink it up for 3 hours. What a great way to spend a Sunday - and $400.

“Maybe Incognito should try playing in the Arena League. The fans show up just to drink beer that isn’t north of $6 and cheer their brains out.”

I’m with redbull. After suffering through rodney peete, ty detmer, and doug peterson and sticking by the birds…watching the eagles become a perenial contender for most of this decade was much more rewarding. However, I hope more eagle fans follow the rams fans lead so I can climb the waiting list line!!!! Drop your tickets!!!!

It seems that they are seriously just trying to sabotage the entire team and have the city turn against them to get out of the lease and move back to LA. But doesn’t it just seem as though they did this before? Right before they left LA and moved to St. Louis…?
And if they are looking to just sell; well in this financial climate, beside the government, who has $1 billion available? So to sell, there has to be a discount. To discount a company that is overvalued, the easiest way to put out a poor product. Mission accomplished!
I saw a team that was not even competing in S.F. They just gave up… Why should I waste my money supporting a team that untimely has my dollars paying the salaries of players like this?
Not just jumping ship… I was there for a long time - even through the wonderful 90s. I just wish the organization would would completely shift to ‘football people’ and football players

If I was a Ram fan I would simply stop showing up. Being that I’m a Redskin fan….and the several bad years we’ve had…I called the front office and complained. We’re all consumers….and although I do not boo I can understand why fans do it. Icognito might be better off putting all his energy on field. We as fans, are a fickle bunch.

Incognito. Is there a better name in professional sports today? And then he disses the fans for going incognito as either empty seats or fans of the other team. Maybe he should worry about he and his linemates going incogntio as matadors for the great Ole blocks they’ve been throwing all year.

I lived in St. Louis for years in the ’80s and ’90s. It just isn’t a football town.
The people has have always loved the Cardinals and the Blues, even when those teams struggled. They have one of the most loyal fan bases in MLB and NHL.
But it never was an NFL town. When the Cardinals left for Arizona in the ’80s, there’s was no outrage (not like when the Colts moved from Baltimore, and the Browns — who by the way couldn’t make it in St. Louis either — left Cleveland).
That’s why I was shocked to see the Rams move to St. Louis in the ’90s. They had decent support from St. Louis fans when they were new, but it waned until Kurt Warner saved the team at the end of the decade. Then when the Rams were Super Bowl quality and one of the most exciting teams to watch, the fans supported them again.
But once they started losing, St. Louis fans became exactly what I expected them to be. Fair weather fans who support the team only when they win.
