If we owned an all-sports network that had a prime spot on every cable system and enough cash to pilfer the rights to the BCS games from FOX, we’d amend the crawl at the bottom of the screen to say this: “Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com confirms Internet report that Browns G.M. Phil Savage sent nasty e-mail to fan.”
Here’s how it happened.
Earlier this morning, I sent A.J. Daulerio of Deadspin an e-mail telling him that we’d be posting an item regarding the opinion of a league insider that it would be out of character for Savage to tell a disgruntled fan (or anyone) “f–k you.” I gave Daulerio a head’s up because I didn’t want him to think we doubted the accuracy of the Deadspin report. (Yes, there is honor among bloggers. Well, a little.)
In response, Daulerio forwarded the e-mail chain. As it turns out, the “fan” was a guy from WXDX in Pittsburgh.
Since we hear from Tim Benz of WXDX from time to time (and we’ve appeared on Mark Madden’s show on a few occasions), I decided I’d drop Benz a line to confirm it. And while searching for Benz’s e-mail address, I discovered that he’d sent me the Savage e-mail chain on Tuesday, and that for reasons unbeknownst (I still love that freaking word) to me I didn’t act on it.
So, basically, we’re far less inclined at this point to conclude that the whole thing was a ruse.
It’ll be interesting to see what Savage says about the situation if/when he’s confronted with it.

Maybe Savage intended to say “Fart you.”

… and if its not true, I”m sure you’ll attempt clear Savage’s name with the same amount of effort as to slander it…
“… Senator this committee owes an apology! Apology Senator!….”
what did you wake this morning and have a big bowl of “lets try and get someone fired today”???

So you had the scoop all along and let Deadspin beat you to it? You’re slipping, Florio. Quit that day job of yours.

Is anyone really dumb enough to think that Phil Savage uses psavage@clevelandbrowns.com? Hang on. Let me email rlerner@clevelandbrowns.com and rcrennell@clevelandbrowns.com to find out what they think. And then I’m going to email bquinn@clevelandbrowns.com and let him know some girl at the bar wants to go out on a date with him.
I get that this site is about rumors in the NFL but its fast becoming about as intelligent as the WNBA.

Of course it was a ruse - why the hell would Phil Savage waste his time reading e-mails from clowns like that? He should be busy running the team.

While I wouldn’t have put it quite that way, that’s the first thing that came to my mind too. Who hates the Cleveland Browns more than Trent Dilfer? Any and all Steelers fans. So I’m supposed to believe that a radio station employee from WXDX (which just *happens* to be a sister station of the flagship home of Steelers football WDVE) can be trusted?
It stinks.

A radio guy from Pittsburgh tells the GM in Cleveland how to do his job and all he get’s in return is a pseudo-bad word in an email. Is that all there is to this? Whatever… it’s not like he slammed the guy into a wall or anything.

Oh, so the “source” is a guy from a Pittsburgh radio station pretending to be a disgruntled fan. Wow, he sounds about as credible as…. well, as Mike Florio. What a joke! This site has become the National Enquirer of Sports News.

If he’s tryuly a radio guy from Pittsburgh and emailed the GM of the Cleveland Browns, I’m HAPPY he got a “F-You”.
Hey, here’s another one - “F-You, Pittsburgh radio guy.”
Now if Crennel would just grow a backbone!

It is incredibly easy to forge email trails. SMPT is not a validated protocol, so I write out an email from a command line, I can make it say that it is from any email address I want. Want that email from bill.gates@microsoft.com claiming that the idea for Windows was really yours? Give me a sec and it will be on its way…
While I don’t necessarily disagree with the opinion of Savage in the”email”, I think that kind of response would be so out of character for Savage that I doubt its authenticity.

“Of course it was a ruse - why the hell would Phil Savage waste his time reading e-mails from clowns like that? He should be busy running the team. ”
Exactly. That’s part of the problem with Savage. Why would he get into that public pissing match with K2? He’s a scout, not a GM–he doesn’t possess the leadership ability or the PR skills to be an NFL GM.

It was a Browns fan who lives in Pittsburgh, PFT. I know this because we post on the same message board. Poster’s name is “Soup”.
