Agent Drew Rosenhaus tells John Clayton of ESPN.com that running back Edgerrin James has asked the Cardinals to release him, and that the team has declined.
The story was first reported by a media outlet that Clayton and/or his editors have gone out of their way to avoid acknowledging, first attributing the story to “Internet reports” (what is this, 2001?) and then in an updated version vaguely crediting “news reports.”
“Edgerrin isn’t trying to cause any problems,” Rosenhaus said. “He has had a Hall of Fame career and he has enjoyed his stay in Arizona. But it’s apparent that he’s probably not going to be back with the Cardinals next season. If that’s the case, he can move and help another team and get a start now.”
The problem is that, because the trade deadline has passed, James would be exposed to the waivers process, which could result in James being claimed by the Lions or the Bengals or the Chiefs.
Any team that would claim James would need to have sufficient cap space to account for his prorated $5 million salary.
Still, none of that matters since it appears very unlikely at this point that the Cardinals would cut James.

WTF? Ride the pine, cash your checks, and be glad you’re on a playoff team. Who knows, maybe you’ll get a ring from it all. It would almost make up for you leaving Andy a year too soon.

The difference is that PFT simply uses nebulous statements such as “we’re told” that James wanted out. That’s not reporting, especially under a section called Rumor Mill (which emphasizes that you’re just posting anything that comes your way from any “source).
John Clayton, on the other hand, actually called a reliable in-the-know source, James’ agent, and quoted him on the subject with more details. That’s reporting.
When PFT actually does reporting, it might matter more that it was first on a story.

Edge has a SB ring. The Colts voted to give him one. they felt his previous contributions earned it for him. Or maybe it was just hanging with them SB week that did it. It ain’t the same as winning one playing though. And if by some miracle the Cards win a SB this year it’ll probably suck for him riding the pine.

Hey ‘lemaka’, the Internet is and has been the most popular form of media in the world for years. PFT is Top 5 in viewership when it comes to NFL sites and it consistently breaks news and stories before whales like ESPN.com and Fox Sports. Saying Florio isn’t part of the media is like saying Grady Jackson is svelte and Rachel Ray is hot. Wake up and smell reality…

Why didnt they just deal him before the tradde deadline? I mean it seems pretty obvious you dont want to pay that kind of cash to a dude sittin on the bench the rest of the year.

I honestly think crack whores have more honesty, integrity and motivation
than does Drew Rosenhouse(sic). Is a new situation always better than
what presently exists? Because if Hightower gets hurt and Edge “shows up”…oh,
never mind.
And the irony is, when you think about it, these days, Drew Rosenhaauuss is
a better citizen these days than Leigh Steinberg. Hey! Leigh! Did you claim
the hill, or make a statement, or make a plea, or do penence?
Whore in a world of whore-dom.

WTF is Rosenhaus talking about…dude is nothing more than a gravytraining MOFO…he’s worried about the gravy running out so he wont be able to ladle it off the top of his “clients”…
Edge should just sit on the bench and let the season ride out…hell, if he got what he wanted, he could end up in Detroit or Cincy….and that would REALLY SUCK!

Hall of Fame career? That’s a bit of a stretch I think.
And why would the Cardinals care if James was picked up by the Chiefs, the Bungles, or the Lions? All of those teams are horrible and won’t be anywhere near the playoff hunt.

The “we’re told” is more of a style thing. I mean, lots of times, FLorio says we … and it’s just him. But PFT has broken plenty of stuff, including this Edge thing. Clearly, the source was reliabe, rasalas. PFT has its faults and bad stories, as do all other publications. However, there was zero fault with this story, and PFT did break the story.
PS webdeke, Rachel Ray is unquestionably hot!

I love the PFT/Florio haters that visit and post comments on a site they hate.
Florio,
Just to reach total potential, you may want to start a PFT Haters site and sell PFT Haters SWAG. I would do it myself but I spend all my time being bitter about things that don’t really matter.

Gee, which team has a need at RB and a boatload of cap space? BUC-COS! Of course Arizona will Green Bay James on this for fear of him going to the Bucs and coming back to hurt them in the playoffs.

The last time one of Rosenhaus’ clients started down this path it ended up with that clown being suspended for 4 games without pay and eventually cut. That did not work out as Rosenhaus and that client hoped that season. Eventually the client ended up with the biggest enabler in all of the NFL, Jerry Jones. The client - was the driveway workout press conference holder himself - Owens.
I believe Edge has a lot more common sense than Owens so I hope he will do what he can this year and work on his release in the off season.
