Though he’s apparently committed not to creating a distraction for the 7-3 Cardinals by publicly complaining about his current status with the team, we’re told that running back Edgerrin James asked the team to release him in the wake of his recent benching.
To little surprise, the team declined.
If he had been cut, he would have been exposed to the waivers system, and could have been claimed by teams like the Lions or the Bengals.
James started the first seven games of the 2008 season, but then didn’t play at all in a 34-13 win over the Rams. He played in the past two games, both wins, but started neither of them.
In a 29-24 win over the 49ers, James had two carries for four yards; during Sunday’s 26-20 victory over the Seahawks, James ran one time, for one yard.
James currently is being paid a base salary of $5 million, and he’s slated to earn a base salary of $5 million in 2009, the final year of his contract with the team. Barring a catastrophic injury to new starter Tim Hightower, it’s highly unlikely that the Cardinals would bring James back, at any salary.
The problem is that James joined the team in the final season of the Dennis Green era. New coach Ken Whisenhunt decided in the middle of the season to go in a different direction; undoubtedly, Whisenhunt’s strategy will result in James being released in the offseason.
That said, it makes sense for the Cardinals to keep him around. If Hightower or backup J.J. Arrington get hurt down the stretch, the Cardinals will need James to be ready to play.
James currently is ranked 13th on the all-time NFL rushing list, with 11,992 yards. He’s within striking distance of Thurman Thomas (12,074), Franco Harris (12,120), Marcus Allen (12,243), Jim Brown (12,312), and Tony Dorsett (12,739).
Each of those players already have been enshrined in the Hall of Fame.
Though James’ per-carry average has dipped below 4.0 yards during his time in Arizona, he rushed for 1,159 yards in 2006 (his first season with the team), and 1,222 yards a year ago.

“Barring a catastrophic injury to new starter Tim Hightower, it’s highly unlikely that the Cardinals would bring James back, at any salary.”
Why would they keep him even if Hightower gets injured? Is he any better than a rookie undrafted free agent right now? Don’t think so. Anyone can average 3.0 a carry.

James is washed up. Its still been a great career though. For whatever reason even though the numbers are really good, I don’t see him as a Hall of Famer. Its like he has always been very good but never great you know

I guess Edge didn’t learn from Emmett Smith’s mistake of signing with the Cardinals.
At least Edge will still have some tread on the tires when he reaches the market this off-season, but there’s no way he’ll get a franchise-back contract like he did when he left Indy for Phoenix.

I don’t think it matters who they have at runningback. They barely ever run the ball anyway.

yeah, to the d-bag that said anyone can average 3.0 yards a carry…you should probably revisit and retract that statement.
Edge was a great back for many years and he is wearing down and past his prime, albeit he has lasted longer than many backs while being productive.

Edgerrin “No Gain” James has been a total bust at Arizona.
He was exposed as a running back who could never beat even the slowest defensive tackles… a terrible blocker who could not pick up the blitz…. an awful pass catcher who routinely drops most screen passes.
And he was never a team-first guy. He skipped most of the voluntary offseason workouts, and threw his offensive line under the bus for his lack of production.
Is it any wonder why Indianapolis got rid? All they did in his absence was go out and win a Super Bowl.
Now Arizona is guaranteed a playoff berth for the first time in memory… and “No Gain” is lobbying to get released.
Evidently, in his mind, he’d rather accumulate meaningless yards elsewhere for his so-called hall-of-fame resume, rather than play for a playoff contender.
Edgerrin “No Gain” James = Slow, No-Talent, 2×4-handed, Team-Cancer.

So, the Cards get to the playoffs and they need two running backs? Why is that
a stretch? The Giants are using 3 different running backs. So what if Edge hasn’t
played in two games…it’s a long season. Patience, my son, patience.

James appears to be way past his prime. Hightower had seemingly been more effective than him, but in last couple of games neither has done any good on the ground. However when the Cards used Arrington in the game against Seattle, he responded with much better runs than either of the 2 other running backs.

No one would have claimed James at his $5M salary. Why would a losing franchise such as the Lions pay James? Why would the Cardinals care if the Lions or Bengals did claim him. In fact, they would have been thrilled.
The Cardinals were concerned that James would clear waivers and sign with a playoff team where he might make a difference. He would then be worth paying through the end of the year.

Those saying Edge was never great are either too young or have short memories. I don’t like the Colts but he was a big part of there team and was a beast before his injury in KC. With out looking, I bet he has the numbers to get in.

People do have short memories - or they are just stupid.
James won the rushing title his first two years - and not on a team with no passing attack (Like Peterson and early Tomlinson).
James is the guy who came back from a major knee injury like you are supposed to come back from one: diminished.
Unlike Priest Holmes & Jamal Lewis, James did not get magically faster after a blown out knee. I guess they did something “extra” during their rehab.
Post-Injury James looked like Walter Peyton his last two seasons - picking and sliding - making a run play that was blocked well enough for two yards into five or six.
What value does James have now? If you have a good OL, he will give you the amount of yards and a little extra that the play was blocked for. Every time. Think Ottis Anderson with the NY Giants.
For those of you who are ripping him: Have you no decency?
If you have no decency; you are the perfect FlorIdiot.

Let me help out here…as I’ve watched EVERY game he’s played in (as I have season tickets)
1st off - Hardhat you are way off. Edge has shown to every off season activity with the Cards. Every one…even non-mandatory OTA’s.
Edge fought through walls his first two seasons in AZ and still managed to get 1200+ yards both seasons.
He’s proven to be a solid player on and off the field. He’s a leader in and out of the locker room.
He’s a dang good blocker.
Where’s his problem? 1st - he has never broken any long gains. In all his carries he’s only gone over 20 yards twice…whereas Hightower did it his first start. 2nd- He sucks at catching the ball out of the backfield…he couldn’t catch a screen pass to save his families life. 3rd - he doesn’t know when to open or shut his mouth via the media…right now is not the time…nothing can or will be done…trade deadline is gone and the Cards are not going to release him outright…no way…he’s only burning bridges with Coach Whisenhunt.
I like Edge, but he will be released or traded this offseason. My bet is some team will come in and offer a 6th round pick and the deal will be done. The money will be saved and used for Q or Warner.
Q will be resigned and so will Warner. Karlos Dansby will be franchised again.

We don’t want him, we have the deisel known as Cedric Benson. He was real good in his prime, but wore down, had injuries, and is not by a longshot a HOF’r. It’s not the Hall of Real Good, if it was, he’d be in.

3 yards a carry is nothing to a pro runningback. Most runningbacks get the ball say 20 times a game. So that’s 60 yards a game.
A good Average per carry is 4.
In the NFL atm, there are 40 players with a 3.7 yards per carry. This is based on minimum 6.25 attempts for each team’s game. There are 29 players with 4 yards per carry.
