The NFL recently announced that it would cut the prices of playoff tickets in an effort to make them more affordable for the average fan.
But cutting ticket prices sometimes just makes them more affordable for scalpers, who turn the NFL’s price-slashing into an increase in their own profits.
So NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says the league is looking into ways to get tickets directly to fans who will actually attend the games, not to scalpers.
“The reality is that Super Bowl tickets are trading at four to five times face value,” Goodell said, per Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times. “One of the big issues that we had in reducing those lower-priced tickets is, do they fall into the wrong hands? Do the scalpers go and take them, and they get the reduced price?
“All they do is get a better margin, which we’re not interested in. . . . We’re trying to figure out how to get the tickets to the fans.”
So how will the league cut scalpers out of the ticket business? Goodell says the NFL is considering having fans register for admission to games and then be admitted to the stadium when they show up with a photo ID.
“It’s difficult and it’s time consuming, but it may be the next step that we need to take is where you actually say, ‘You come to the stadium with your identification, and you’ll get your two tickets after you’re inside the gate,’” Goodell said.
That would make the process of getting into the stadium more difficult, but if it makes tickets cheaper, most fans would probably take that trade-off.

When the NFL made the gratuitous ticket scalper haven Stubhub an official partner they made it clear that they couldn’t care less about the fans.

Something needs to be done. I went to the Skins Dallas game and my ticket cost $200. The price on the ticket…$79

Goodell has my full support on this. I think its a good idea to buy ticket but arrive at the stadium with ID and pick up ticket. Not only would that prevent scalpers from reselling it at higher price but prevent fake tickets from being sold, which has been the problem too.

thats a bad idea, then when you buy season tickets to say the cincy games and then teams ends up sucking, you cant resell them. I’m sure then the NFL would come up with some airline type idea where you could transfer them to someone else after a $35 per ticket fee or sell them back to one of their partners at half the value.
I hate scalpers profiting from it as much as any fan, but if the public pays for almost everything associated with an NFL franchise, they should be able to resell on the open market at market price.

What if you’re a season ticket holder that can’t attend a few games and sells their tickets at face value to the games he can’t make? If you’re one of the people buying those tickets at face value do you need to then report it to the team in order to be registered?

What does this do for folks who get their tickets through friends who have season tickets and just cant make it to that game? It’s a fairly common practice to sell or give yoru tickets to a friend if you can’t make it to the game.

Thats exactly what they did in London for the Dolphins/Giants…
You had to actually go into the stadium and go left or right depending on last name and pick up your tix’s
It worked with no major problems at all, i don’t think it took an extra 15 minutes..

Is it just me or does anyone else think Goodell is to football what Selig is to baseball. I still hold SLUG SELIG responsible for ruining my first love, baseball. I liked Goodell at first. Seemed like he wanted to “clean” up the image of the NFL. But he is over governing the sport on things (to me) that don’t matter that much, and not doing enough about things that do matter. The officals flat out stink, even with replay. Pacman and Chris Henry are still in the league. Was all the “Shield: talk just lip service? Fact is, for what ever reason, the play on the feild has not been up to par this season. Poor play, poor coaching, and poor officiating. The records show parity, but my eyes tell me somethings wrong.

Why doesn’t the NFL have your name printed on the ticket before it’s sent out to you? Then you just show an I.D. and ticket at the entrance and yer in.
It shouldn’t be that costly or difficult to have this done

I dont think it’s a good idea. What if someone wants to give a ticket to their brother? What the NFL can do is raise the prices of some tickets which will sell out later instead of immediately giving a chance for those truly desperate to buy from the league instead of the scalpers. But then NFL should balance that out with reducing the price of some special tickets which will go on sale the same day of the game and an ID can be required for those. This way the truly dedicated will be the ones who will camp out for the tickets.

Why don’t they just tattoo a barcode on everyone’s ass and call it a day. Then people can go through the stadium lines on a conveyor belt as some stadium employee scans their ass, similar to scanning groceries at a grocery store. Have a trap door at the end for those rejected, then those rejected can slide down a chute right out of the stadium.
Better yet, lets go right to the source and after every baby delivery, tattoo the babies asses with a bar code. It would save time. Isn’t there any privacy left in this world? This is ridiculous.
BTW, if someone buys tickets as a gift, doesn’t that make another one of Goodell’s stupid ideas null and void?
Goodell IMO, is the worst commissioner in the history of all sports.

WOW. Kudos to Goodell for thinking about the fans. When Goodell said the league wasn’t recession-proof, it obviously wasn’t just talk. He means it.

next step, the benevolent NFL steps in and acts as “ticket broker” for fans wanting to resell their tickets and high rollers looking to buy them.
The NFL is targeting the scalping profit.
