Our own MDS (who as always did a great job filling in while yours truly was tending to the day job) dropped me a line during the 3:00 p.m. EST showing of Outside the Lines on ESPN to explain that Brian Seltzer of ESPN 950 in Philly made an eyebrow-lifting claim regarding the still-raging debate over whether NFL players know that a game can end in a tie.
Per MDS, Seltzer said on the air that one of the officials at Sunday’s Eagles-Bengals game didn’t know about ties, either.
Frankly, we find this hard to believe. Then again, we would have found it hard to believe four days ago that McNabb didn’t know there could be a tie game.
Our guess? The McNabb P.R. machine is finally starting to spin, and only two days too late. Really, what better way to deflect blame from Donovan than to dump on the zebras?
Rich Burg has every reason to rehab McNabb on this issue. Indeed, there’s already talk that McNabb’s admitted lack of football knowledge could render any potential broadcasting career blowed up and/or debacled.
If so, it makes sense. In the post-Emmitt NFL media industry, the folks responsible for selecting on-air talent will likely be more careful than ever to ensure that the big-name candidates for big-time jobs won’t embarrass themselves or, more importantly, those who hired them.

Why is this McNabb’s fault?
Everything he was taught came from the quarterback guru Brad Childress.

Thank God for this. While this is an old, beat down topic, at least Florio can put a new spin on it, and change the point to discuss future ramifications of McNabb.

Well, at least we know it wasn’t the head referee. He explained the rule clear as day before the coin toss. Maybe the back judge? Head Linesman? Guess they didn’t pay attention, just like McNabb and the rest of the Eagles. Or maybe this is BS.

If you were right, Emmitt woulda been fired by now.
The players don’t care, nor do the people hiring them.

And how did we jump to this conclusion? Is Brain Seltzer part of McNabb’s PR machine? It would be the first I’m hearing it. My knowledge of Seltzer is that he is a pretty fair journalist.
Florio, I still do not understand why you find it so hard to believe that not everyone, in every field of work, knows every nuance of their field, even basic information. Especially, people who are part-time help.

Emmitt hasn’t been fired because that would be discrimination. You can’t just fire a person because they have a speach impetiment.

umm pretty sure michael irvin was on espn for awhile after being arrested with copious amounts of blow and strippers. maybe, just maybe that is a little worse then not knowing if a game can end in a tie. the real question is do more players not know the tie can happen or do more attend parties with strippers while powdering their noses?
also how about some insight into exactly which official or how this was found out. you take the time to quote mcnabb’s press conference, but cannot even attempt to back up this story. this would be interesting to say the least.

Does it really matter if an official or a player for that matter, may not have known that the game could end in a tie? How is this relevant to anything? Unless they end the game and the league officials call up and tell them that they forgot to go into overtime, then I would be concerned. I believe that it is more important that the Eagles/Bengals coaching staff realize that they had better make the correct calls or it could end in a tie.
This season we have spent way too much time over analyzing if the zebras made the correct call or not. Mistakes have happened and will happen. Ed Hoculi, who has always been considered a top official, gets ripped because (from his viewpoint) he blew a play dead. They are being pounded on two different factors of the game, let the players play and do not let the players injure themselves. Protect the QB ( Wilson & Tuck hits that are legit, but sent to the league for review) and let them play (Jared Allen vs Matt Schaub no flags but fines).
It is a different game when we slow it down and look at it frame by frame, but they have to get it right in a blink. When they do go under the hood, they had better come out with the correct answer though (unlike what happened in this weekends Pitt vs San Diego final TD.)

This would be a non issue if McNabb would have not “qualified” his knowledge of ties in the NFL. Suggesting that the “playoffs and Super Bowl” could be involved was pure genius.

Ties are why Americans like myself don’t like soccer. Hockey realized that ties were killing their sport and did something about it.
Granted ties only happen in football about every 5 years, but still it should not happen. Ties suck. This is not little league….every game should have a winner and a loser.

Why do you feel the need to drag Emmitt into the McGassed discussion? Are you saying that Emmitt doesn’t know the rules of the profession that he worked at for several years because you don’t like the way that he talks? You let me know when Emmitt ever says anything as dumb as McGassed’s “black on black crime” or “I didn’t know you could tie” comments.

In the event of a tie, whoever won the coin toss should be declared the winner.
It makes almost as much sense as the regular OT format anyway.
