In a Tuesday morning appearance on Sirius NFL Radio, former Giants coach Jim Fassel didn’t deny reports that he sent a handwritten letter to Raiders owner Al Davis regarding Fassel’s interest in the head-coaching job.
“I communicate with all kinds of people,” Fassel told Randy Cross and Bob Papa, “and if somebody said I wrote a letter to Al Davis and make a big deal out of it, do you want a list of how many people I’ve talked to over the last six months about NFL and things? I do it all the time. I don’t know what the big deal is.”
Fassel also continued his apparent attempt to obtain consideration for the potential head-coaching vacancy in Oakland by pressing his face into the owner’s backside.
“I can honestly say this and I mean this with all sincerity,” Fassel said. “I know Al Davis. I’ve talked to him at different times and I’ve worked for him and I can honestly say, I can’t speak for everybody, but I can honestly say the year I was there [as quarterbacks coach in 1995], we were doing good now, we were lighting it up pretty good on offense until we lost [QB Jeff] Hostetler [and Davis] never interfered with me one time. I think he called me a couple of times and asked me a couple of things and said, ‘Well, if you need anything just let me know. Other than that, just keep on doing what we’re doing, I guess.’ He didn’t interfere at all. He treated me great. He paid me really good money and we did this. So I don’t have the same problem that, maybe, other people do.”
Since being fired by as offensive coordinator of the Ravens in October 2006, Fassel has been out of football. He was a candidate for the Redskins’ head-coaching job in January.

He’d be a good fit for the Raiders if he can hire his own staff of coaches. If he’s stuck with Al Davis’ assistants, you can’t figure anything will change.

Fassel Sucks. The Raiders suck. They’re perfect for each other. Maybe Fassel can hire Dick Jauron and Brad Childress to complete his staff of incompetent f-ups.

Come on, Jim, that’s not very sexy.
Give us what the media wants to hear, you know, like “Al Davis is a control freak, he’s a dictator”, give us something, anything.
Not the truth though, Jim, come on!

somebody put a muzzle on this guy, he’s a horrible coach,
the giants made the superbowl in 2000 in spite of him,
fassel didn;t so anything positive, it was his coordinators
john fox and sean payton who led that team, who ironically
are both head coaches in the nfl and fassel is working
on some b.s. radio job and writing love letters to al davis
on napkins.

Is there any truth to the rumor that his note said he “Will Coach for Food”?
The guy is a tool, and if he has to resort to sending out letters begging for a job, doesn’t that say it all?

Apparently you have never had to send letters “begging for a job.”
It doesn’t take much to find yourself in that position. It must be nice.

what is the story? like he said he’s probably been pimping himself to every coaching vacancy for years. don’t know why this specific instance warrants a “story”
that said, he’s probably the best coach the raiders could get at this point.

Some call it “sending out letters begging for a job” some call it sending a resume and cover letter. Why exactly are we chastising someone for looking for a job?

-That’s all well and good in the real world, but coaches and players have agents that do this for them, so it’s laughable to me that you would have such a strong overreaction to what I said. I’m sorry that your husband, Jim Fassel, is struggling to get a head coaching position, but that’s not a reason to lash out at someone on an internet board. The only way I could see your gross reaction is if you have a direct stake in Fassell getting the gig, so I assumed you must be his bitch. Get a life, tool.

So then we can all send Al Davis letters stating why we’d be good fits for the job? I used to rule at techmobowl on Nintendo when I was young, and Howie Long was great. Does that mean I’m qualfied?
This is the NFL, and sending unsolicited letters is pathetic. Drumming up interest in him as a coach is his agent’s job, and it would be best left to the professionals. That way we wouldn’t be reading BS non-stories like this.

Most of these comments if not all of them fail miserably at pointing out any issue with a man giving his resume to a ball club with an open position. Isn’t that what you typically do? How did you find your job? Oh right you probably gave your resume to someone and then called to follow up. Kind of sounds familiar. Hmm, where did I see this before…
Oakland owns, always will. Suck it.

-Ah yes, the oft lamented words of the uneducated, blue collar worker. Begruding folks everywhere for having enough desire to further their studies and careers, while using the whole “college boy” cry as a crutch.
Nevermind that you are way off on your assumptions, and that it makes no difference. Fact is that you continue to show your ignorance with every response. If your main point is that my opinion is less valid than yours because I went to college, you need to let it go. There is still time if you want to maybe attend a school and get that education after all. Then you wouldn’t have this ridiculous persecution complex toward those who did go. Get a life.

Ah yes, this thread of posts reminds me of a saying I once heard:
Getting into an online flamer arguement is like getting a medal in the special olympics - even if you win, you’re still retarded.
Cereally folks, Fossil (yes, I spelled it that way) is looking for work. Anyone in his position would be doing the same. No one went on a blasting spree when Kiffin was reportedly approaching the University of Washington. Why not? He’s a worthless turd who got fired and is now begging for work too. Yet because the Imperial Emperor Al fired him, he’s just a poor lonely soul who’s been mistreated. Give me a break. Anyone with half a brain can see why Kiffin got fired. He threw a public tantrum when his demands weren’t met, and then proceeded to do everything in his power to get himself fired.
Fossil’s not great, he’s not even good. But he needs a job and Oakland needs a coach. Simple arithmatic. There aren’t a whole lot of coaches looking for work… yet, and there aren’t a whole lot of coaches who’ve been fired… yet. It makes sense. I’m sure if you did some digging, you’d find he sent a letter to Detroit too. They just probably had enough sense to file it in the waste bin. I suppose we could wait to see if the rumors of Minnesota, Cleveland and Cinci firing their coaches will happen, but if it doesn’t, and Fossil does go to Detroit, then what?
Roll Al to the sidelines?
This is a rediculous post, and a rediculous thread to follow it.

Umm, actually LSCII, I’ve done studies in education, and calling people with disabilities “handicapped people” is actually quite offensive. The politically correct term would be “Person with disability” they are first and foremost a person, who has a disability. Handicap is a term that is outdated and shows your ignorance I believe.

Hey bobbyjohn44,
So me saying handicapped is more offensive than another poster calling someone retarded? Solid logic there. As for your politically correct terminology, you can go pound sand. I don’t have the time or energy to brush up on every new phrase some PC assclown comes up with every 3 months.
