We’ve never really quite known what “the riot act” is, since no one has ever taken the time to actually read it to us.
But, apparently, Saints coach Sean Payton owns a copy of it — and he recently read it to tight end Jeremy Shockey, possibly in the form of a bedtime story.
Jay Glazer of FOX reported on Sunday that Payton recently told Shockey that he must turn things around quickly. Payton reminded Shockey that the third-year coach put his own rear end on the line to acquire the veteran tight end in a trade with the Giants.
Shockey, for his part, vowed to change.
Whether it’s too late remains to be seen. We heard last week that Shockey is already hated by more than a few members of the organization. And once people acquire such strong feelings, it’s hard to erase them.
Shockey has 30 catches for 262 yards, and no touchdowns. He’s could finish the season with career lows in all three categories.

What a punk. Cut his ass. Classic example of a payday amplifying an attitude. He’s useless until he has to resort to a crap deal with short money. Its the only way

The Riot Act is a draconian English law from the early 1700s which allowed a Mayor or other town authority to arrest and in some cases put to death any assembled group of people more than twelve who did not disperse after being “read the riot act,” which is to say, being told to leave off.
It has been adapted (and enforced harshly by those in power seeking to quell opposition) world wide, and in some placess variants of it still exist.
I’m surprised a lawyer doesn’t know this stuff.

If you don’t know what the Riot Act is, ask Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riot_Act
(In short, the Riot Act of 1714 allowed a justice of the peace or sheriff in England to declare, by reading a portion of the law to them, that a particular gathering was an illegal riot and require them to disperse — it was a final warning that gave the sheriff the right to arrest anyone who remained after twenty minutes. Now you know.)

Players from the University of Miami with a bad its all about me attitude? Who would have thought that would ever happen? Not very many of them actually backed up their cheap talk with great play. K2 and Shockey are two who are capable of doing great things… Wonder if we will ever see that on a consistent basis?

Not too hard to track down the etymology of this one, fellas. It’s an actual Act. Consider it read.

A friend sent me the Riot Act in its entirety not long ago. But here is a better synopsis:
The Riot Act was passed by the British government in 1714 and came into force in 1715. This was the period of the Catholic Jacobite riots, when mobs opposed to the new Hanoverian king, George I, were attacking the meeting houses of dissenting groups. There was a very real threat of invasion by supporters of the deposed Stuart kings — as actually happened later that year and also in 1745. The government feared uprisings, and passed a draconian law making it a felony if a group of more than twelve persons refused to disperse more than an hour after magistrates had told them to do so. To invoke the law, the magistrates had to read the proclamation contained in the Act aloud to the mob, something that often required more courage than they could summon up:
Our sovereign Lord the King chargeth and commandeth all persons, being assembled, immediately to disperse themselves, and peaceably to depart to their habitations, or to their lawful business, upon the pains contained in the act made in the first year of King George, for preventing tumults and riotous assemblies. God save the King.

Prediction: Saints cut Shockey at the end of the year, and they have to give the Giants a first rounder for the turd that is Jeremey Shockey.

I think it’s interesting to note that since Shockey broke his leg last year, the Giants have one all but two of their games, including three road playoff games and the Super Bowl. Cutting him loose was the best thing the Giants have done in years.

Yes, exactly! Anyone who watches the Giants realizes that a good 4 or 5 of Eli’s passes a year were picked off because of a “miscommunication” between Eli and Shockey. In almost every instance it seemed as though Shockey had broke the wrong way once the ball was put into the air. It’s also been heavily rumored for years that Shockey would simply “forget” many routes, and rather than just making “poor reads” on the defense he would flat out destroy the play.
I’ve been a Giants fan for many years now, and never once did I hear that Amani Toomer (or any other receiver for that matter) ran bad routes, and watching Shockey’s up-and-down play on the field for his last 5 years here seemed to reinforce that.
Plaxico was good for causing a couple of picks a year too, but usually because of an occasional lack of effort, not incorrect routes. Thankfully Plax seemed to clean that up after 2006.
Shockey started off his career in a great way, but eventually had grown to become a big baby here in New York. This EGOMANIAC would routinely mock Eli after a number of his bad passes, yet you would never see Shockey actually doing anything to acknowledge “my bad” when he would run a bad route. That’s not what a good teammate does (and that’s not what you do when you have a very young and very raw QB who needs some support from time to time). I’m sure you’ve never once seen Eli mock one of his WR’s or TE’s after they failed to make a play…
Shockey’s actions did nothing but stunt Eli’s growth for a little while there (and more that Eli will EVER admit, because he’s a standup guy). Eli made a number of mistakes that were defnitely on HIMSELF, but with a young QB, the right thing to do is to run back to the huddle, pat him on the rear and focus on executing the next play, or the next series. And truth be told, for every mistake Eli made on the field there was another mistake by Shockey waiting right around the corner, whether it be a bad route, lack of effort, or the man would simply drop passes left and right for no reason at all. If you could look up the stats I would bet my LIFE that Shockey drops more passes than any other Tight End or Wide Receiver in the entire NFL. The man makes a guy like Braylon Edwards or Terrell Owens look “sure-handed” (maybe not over the past two years, because of the games he’s missed due to injury) but over the course of his career.
Shockey’s not all bad though, he has a great deal of talent. And although I refuse to simply state that the Giants “went on a crazy run that ended up in a Super Bowl Championship BECAUSE Shockey got hurt” I will say that had Shockey been healthy that the Giants never would have made it that far. I think the Giants were coming together as a team, with or without Shockey, but you can bet that if he was in the lineup that he would have dropped some key 3rd Down balls or wide-open TD catches in the end-zone and I doubt we would have made it past Dallas or Green Bay.
Shockey developed into a GREAT blocker (not because of his desire to do so, but because Coughlin DEMANDED as much), and I still believe to this day that he is one of the top true elite run-blocking TE’s in this league. But this is not something that he “likes” to do, and as a receiver, and as a player in general he is just too inconsistent. Shockey will always give you his 100% in intensity and attitude towards playing…but you’re lucky to get 80% from him in terms of studying the playbook and on-field concentration (hence the incorrect routes and dropped passes).
And it’s also of mention that although Shockey didn’t miss too many games as a Giant he was ALWAYS banged up or borderline injured. The time he missed in New Orleans and subsequent time that he’s been on the field (but below 100% health) is not a coincidence, but rather a TREND that will be with him for the rest of his career.
It’s also no coincidence that Saints teammates and people in the organization passionately HATE the guy. You’ve all seen Drew Brees FLIP HIS LID on the sideline after Shockey gave NO EFFORT to even try and catch that one slightly overthrown ball on 3rd down a few weeks ago (the game resulted in a loss), and with Sean Payton flipping his lid behind closed doors you can bet that this too will be a trend.
Although Shockey was a cancer here I can’t fault Sean Payton for “sticking his neck out” to trade for him after the draft. Shockey had his best years (his 1st and 2nd years in the NFL) under Sean Payton when he was the Offensive Coordinator for the Giants, and Payton likely thought he was getting the Pro Bowl and “Hall of Fame Bound” TE that he coached in his early years. Had this been the case then it would have been a great deal for a 2nd & 5th Round pick, and the guy came with a reasonable salary (for today’s TE’s). But, as it turns out all Payton got was “Shockey the baby” who can’t control his emotions on or off the field (hence the reason that he acts like a team guy on the sidelines but then proceeds to bash the organization and staff the second he walks out the door), a guy who can’t stay healthy for the life of him, and worst of all a guy who lacks focus (unlike Drew Brees and other leaders on that team). Just wait until the Saints are officially out of the NFC playoff race and Shockey will be bashing Sean Payton’s coaching publicly, to the media…
I laughed at all of the people who said the Giants were making a mistake by trading him (not even for a player, but simply draft picks) and that the Giants were hurting themselves more than they could know by supposedly “standing firm” and showing him the door, yet here we sit at 9-1, we look like one of the Top 2 teams in the NFL (I will give the Titans some respect), we have the best Rushing Attack in all the land, and we’re doing it with a TE who is much younger and much less talented as Shockey (yet Kevin boss does everything we ask of him and you never hear a peep. He is immediately learned how to become an elite blocker and he’s quitely turning into one of the more consistent receiving TE’s in the NFL…give him a couple of years and he’ll make a Pro Bowl).
