The Oakland Raiders have changed head coaches, but they haven’t changed their tendency to try long field goals.

With 11 seconds remaining in the first half of today’s game at New Orleans, new Raiders coach Tom Cable sent out Sebastian Janikowski to try a 59-yard field goal. It missed, wide left. He had previously missed a 57-yard attempt wide left.

That’s not even close to Janikowski’s longest attempt. Two weeks ago against the Chargers, Lane Kiffin sent Janikowski out for a 76-yard attempt. Last season Kiffin sent Janikowski out for a 64-yard attempt.

Today’s 59-yard miss gave the Saints the ball at the 49-yard line with six seconds left, and it could have proved costly for the Raiders: On the ensuing play, Drew Brees completed a 25-yard pass to Billy Miller down the center of the field, appearing to set up the Saints to try a field goal of their own just before halftime. But even though Miller hit the ground with two seconds left and immediately signaled for a timeout, the officials ruled that time had expired, and the half was over.

The Saints lead 10-3. All the action can be followed here.
