Though it remains to be seen whether Giants receiver Plaxico Burress has figured out the connection between his actions and the consequences for them in time to salvage his career in New York, we’re hearing that some players on the team would be happy to chase a second straight Super Bowl title without him.
And those are the guys who apparently understand the importance of respecting the process that governs a football team. The coach has rules. The players either follow the rules or they don’t. If they don’t, they get in trouble.
If getting in trouble on one or more (or, as in Plaxico’s case, 40 or 50) occasions isn’t enough to drive the point home, then eventually the player needs to be removed from the team.
The fact that Burress was strident to the point of defiant when returning to the Fiants (oops) Giants after a one-week suspension doesn’t suggest to us that Burress suddenly “gets it.” And so we think it makes sense to keep a close eye on what transpires in New York over the coming weeks.
Eventually, the team that won a Super Bowl despite the absence of Tiki Barber and Jeremy Shockey could win another one despite the absence of Michael Strahan, Osi Umenyiora, and Burress.
Maybe next year they’ll increase the degree of difficulty by trading Eli Manning for Matt Leinart and requesting permission to replace the “K” ball with a Nerf.

Plexiglass: “I want a new contract”
Reese: “Plex, it’s going to be hard for us to do so since you’ve been in trouble 40 times… We can only offer 35M how’s that?”

I think we’ve all heard that saying “it’s not the players, it’s the system” before. Look where the Patriots are without Brady. This just doesn’t work when your franchise QB goes down, unless you have a Steve Young behind your Joe Montana.
I’m a Giants fan, but even I wouldn’t run too far with this concept until the G-men face tougher opponents. The schedule so far has been fluff. The Redskins team they faced in Week 1 is not the team that takes the field now. If they go undefeated in their division, I might pay it some mind.
It wouldn’t surprise me if they deal Burress this year or next. They are deep at a number of positions, including WR, and you have to remember that Plax is one of Accorsi’s guy’s, not Reese’s.

Isn’t it funny? Ppl still say “Plexiglass” when he has proven that he’s one of the toughest WR in the league (um, sprained ankle, bum knee, winning TD catch in the SB? Oh yeah, couldn’t practice all year but showed up for gameday [and rocked].
… Doesn’t sound too soft or “glassy” to me).

Plax is a big weapon. But if he continues to be a trouble maker and we can get some value for him I say trade him. The Giants are not an organization that should be molly coddling its problem players. The NFC East already has a team that does that and its served them very well over the last 12 years or so.

Yeah - at 3-1 the Patriots are just floundering. There are 23 teams in the league right now that wish they were doing that poorly.

Dude the Pats are 3-1. They are not nearly as dominate, but 3-1 is 3-1.

Which players are saying that? How about some quotes, someone on record, some idea of ‘which’ players? Hell, it could be the backup WRs that are saying this…

plax is the 2008 version of Shockey on the team, apparently. That team has so much talent, they’re stacked and they will be fine. if i were the Giants, i’d cut ties with him, send a message: no more prima donnas on this team. they can win without him, why keep him and his lofty contract?
plax has talent, but he needs some serious mentoring.

Bottom line is this… apparently due to the 40-50 fines, the Giants KNEW Plax was going to give them trouble BEFORE they gave him a new contract. It’s sad that so many teams and/or owners think that just because someone gets a bunch of money they’re all of a sudden going to change who they are.
Jay-Z said it best in one of my all-time favorite songs… “You can try and change but that’s just the top layer, Man you was who you was before you got here”

Way to give credit where credit is do. Face is firepoet, the best team won the game that day, as I recall Brady, Welker, Moss, and Belicheck were all there.

Why would the Lions do that? That would be a terrible deal for them. I’ll take that as a GMEN fan, but that deal is not logical.

I’m an Eagles fan, and I believe the Giants could be just as strong without Burress. It’s obvious that this guy has some sort of issue that leads him to believe he’s above the rules that everyone else has to follow. I’m a realist, and I have to say I’m very impressed with the way Eli Manning has come around as a QB. I know it can tough for any young QB to be thrown into the mix as a rookie, or even in his second year, but I really didn’t think this kid had the makeup to be a solid NFL QB. But, I have to say that I was wrong. I give props to Eli and the Giants, and even though people say they haven’t been tested yet this year, you still have to win the games you are scheduled to play. With their defense still looking very strong, and with their very good running game as well, there’s no reason this team can’t make it back to the Super Bowl without Burress. Obviously, as an Eagles fan I’m not saying I want to see that, but it certainly isn’t unrealistic to think this Giants team can repeat without Burress.

- The Patriots maybe 3-1 but they’ve only beat 1 decent team in the Jets. The other two were the 49er’s (who are bad) and the Chiefs (who are just plain awful).

The math’s just not adding up. If Mexico was fined like 7,482 times for all kinds of “transgressions” detrimental to mankind, then ummmmmmmm why would the Giants have given him a big fat extension for all kinds of crazy dough? He didn’t go in there with a ski mask and a gun to get the money, so if he’s such a problem child, doesn’t that just make them stupid?

They DID show up. The Pats O line is a joke and the Giants showed the world. That’s why the team ranked dead last in sacks in the NFL was able to take out Brady week one. If the Pats played in the NFC East, Cassel would in traction by now.

Maybe I should have been more specific regarding the Patriots. Sure, they’re 3-1, but if the system were that good, they should be 4-0. The team they lost to had the worst record in the NFL last season (1-15).
What I really meant by my comment is that last year they led all NFL offenses in yardage and scoring. This year, they are 24th and 23rd, respectively. That is a huge drop-off.
Of course wins are a more significant statistic, but I have a hard time believing they’ll do any better than a wild card berth this season, and then out in one (or maybe two, since the AFC is looking like the weaker conference this year).
