During his three seasons with the Chicago Bears, running back Cedric Benson wasn’t often singled out as a player who performed well on the practice field.
But in a week with the Cincinnati Bengals, Benson has apparently made a good impression. Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said he likes the way Benson works and that he thinks Benson will have a growing role in the offense as he continues to learn the playbook.
“I will tell you, he’s a very diligent worker and hopefully he’ll continue to be a diligent learner at what he has to do so that we become more comfortable with those things.”
Those things mostly revolve around the passing game, including both running routes and picking up blitzes.
“The natural part of carrying the football — that’s the easy part,” Lewis said. “It’s the other things that come with it that tax you a little bit more and can be just as important.”
If he can learn those things, Benson may be the starter soon. In his Bengals debut on Sunday, Benson had 10 carries for 30 yards. An average of 3.0 yards per carry isn’t very good, but it’s better than the 2.8 yards per carry that Bengals starter Chris Perry is averaging, and Perry has already fumbled five times this season — which is one more fumble than Benson has in his entire career.

Obviously just some PR spin by the Bungles to justify signing a turd. He likes the way he “works” and is a “diligent worker”??? When have you ever heard those words to describe Ced-Ben??? All I’ve ever heard was the exact opposite, so I find Marvin’s words hard to believe.

It could be that Benson’s work ethic has improved since he left Chicago or it could be that Marvin Lewis perception of work ethic is so skewed from coaching the Bengals for so many years, that when someone does any preparation at all he is impressed.

Benson will be a decent running back in the NFL. He is a strong running back, he doesn’t go down too easily after the first hit. He had some decent runs this past weekend, and his average of 3.0 is kind of misleading because of a couple rushes he had when the Bengals were at their own goal line and Dallas had everyone in the box. He didn’t have a good time in Chicago, but their offense was terrible all around the last two years. There is no way he will be a complete bust… unless he gets arrested again.

Little David is in the 5th grade. Yesterday morning when the teacher asked the children what their fathers did for a living, all the typical answers came up: fireman, policeman, salesman, etc.
The teacher noticed that little David was being uncharacteristically quiet and so she asked him about his father.
“My father’s an exotic dancer in a gay bar and takes off all his clothes in front of other men. Sometimes, if the offer is really good, he’ll go out to the alley with some guy and do it with him for money.”
The teacher, obviously shaken by this statement, hurriedly set the other children to work on some coloring, and took little David aside to ask him, “Is that really true about your father?”
“No,” said David, red faced. “He plays for the Bengals but I was too embarrassed to say that in front of the other kids.”

3.0 yards per carry? Just give him a chance, he’ll be able to meet the 2.8 standard like he did in Chicago.

Well, it’s not too hard to be better than Chris ‘Butterfingers’ Perry.
Maybe Benson is unlike most chumps and actually is whipped into shape now that he’s realized how much a screw-up he is? I know it’s a long shot because of who we’re talking about, but maybe.

I never though anything less of Cedric Benson — even at Chicago.
But his hard work in Chicago didn’t translate into success at running back — something rookie RB Matt Forte has been able to do.
Likewise, hard work in Cincinnati doesn’t mean success either.
Someting else has to kick in for Benson. And I rooting for him!

He obviously put in the necessary offseason work required to be a member of the Bengals. He was arrested not once, but twice. That is committment to the core values of an organization, and he wasn’t even a member yet.

sure the offense sucked in chicago that’s why they made him the #4 pick and paid him all that money!and what did they get in return? a fumble in the superbowl that changed the game and constant whining and injuries. plus the off field stuff which he may have gotten out of but should not have been involved to start with.even if he does turn it around in cincy he will always be a bust to bears fans.

Did you *watch* him in Chicago??? The only time he wasn’t going down at first contact was when he was going down *before* it.
” He didn’t have a good time in Chicago, but their offense was terrible all around the last two years. ”
Hard to have a decent offense when you don’t have a RB that can pass protect, and doesnt run the ball well. Some of that could have been the O-line, except that it doesnt explain how Forte is doing so well there.
“There is no way he will be a complete bust… unless he gets arrested again.” Ced Ben is already a bust. When you get drafted at number 4, and you dont get your contract renewed, youre a bust. When you get cut because you’re an ineffective RB, AND you can’t stay out of trouble, you’re DEFINITELY a bust.

Maybe bensons work ethic has suddenly improved, or maybe the Bengals have lower expectations from their players. Benson might be suddenly trying harder, but most players don’t change their ways in the long run. A Leopard can’t change it’s spots, or a bengal can’t change it’s stripes. Something like that.

Hard worker, makes plays, diligent trier…sounds like a Marvin Lewis kind of guy. If Benson chops wood, keeps shovelin’, does his job, gets all four lug nuts on the wheel and rides the bicycle, Lewis will get him a lifetime contract like he has himself.
I’m sure Slappy is about to step in and make some comment about never having coached the game and what have you. Please don’t call me out and have me meet you for some smack talk on a Bengals board.

The Bears have the same O line as last year, they have Kyle Orton at QB and their best WR signed with another team.
So why is Matt Forte so much better than Benson and why is the Bears offense so much better without Dread Head Ced?
Because Benson sucked.
Trying to make him out to be some misunderstood innocent bystander is about as corny as Brett Favre’s poop after a 4th of July BBQ.
