Last year, the San Francisco 49ers made a trade-deadline run at Bears linebacker Lance Briggs. A deal didn’t happen, and the Niners ended up on the wrong side of a tampering case.
This time around, the Niners could be interested in acquiring another guy who is due to become a free agent in March.
Per the Dayton Daily News, the name of Bengals receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh has “come up quite frequently” in San Fran of late. Per the report, the Niners are expected to attempt to upgrade their passing game via the trade market, and Houshmandzadeh could be the target.
The Niners also reportedly could be interested in Lions receiver Roy Williams, who like Houshmandzadeh is due to become a free agent after the season.
It’s unknown whether the Bengals are willing to trade Houshmandzadeh. The team has resisted opportunities to trade receiver Chad Johnson.

It will never happen, TJ will be resigned soon, and Chad will be released or traded after the season.

I would make a deal in a heartbeat, especially if they can get a lower-round pick from SF. I’d move Chad as well, some guys just don’t fit well on a rebuilding team.

Why give up picks? Because they blow them anyway on bust after bust after bust. At least they can get a proven commodity when they do use a draft pick(s) in a potential trade.
It makes sense if they are really hard set on thinking that they are only a WR away from getting over the hump, which they are not, because of the fact that there are no WR’s coming out of this draft that really have any type of ‘Wow’ factor. The 2010 draft will have Michael Crabtree and some others that have some actual talent and ‘Wow’ factor.

I agree with above that the Niners shouldn’t be trading picks away. There are too many holes to plug in several key positions. And they do need more players in a leadership role in that team. TJ isn’t. If need to trade, Roy Williams would be a slightly better character and productive player than TJ.

I still wonder why the trade deadline is so early in Football. Why not push it back to ~ mid season, where teams who are on the buble can actually make a better decision about what the team truly needs?

I hate to see it, but the Bengals are heading into rebuilding mode AGAIN. It is best to let Johnson and TJ go if you can get something in return. If not, then tag TJ next offseason and keep both.
Ocho Cinco has been a huge dud this season anyway. All hat no cattle.

Isn’t their QB a multiple team roster cut? Isn’t their current backup Shaun Hill (1 NFL TD)? Maybe they should focus on who throws the ball…

Can’t say I blame Nolan, he needs results now and doesn’t have the advantage of waiting for a rookie then waiting for that rookie to develop.
Some teams screw themselves by having a revolving door at the coaching position. These guys’ jobs are always in danger so they’re more inclined to make decisions that are good short term but not so good long term. I’m a Titans fan and if there’s any one reason why they’re considered a decent team its because Fisher was retained through the rebuilding phase meaning he could draft players and wait for them to develop. He never really had to face the pressure of winning games to retain his role. What do all the good teams seem to have in common? Stability at the coaching position and a patient front office. Broncos will always be a competitive team because of the same philosophy. Point is teams inclined to struggle to be 7-9 will always be that way because they’re not as willing to have a down year or two (or four) and build up the young talent.
Patience is the key and it starts with stability at the head coaching position.

Proof? The niners have not asked about Whosyour mama. If the niners are idiots what does that make the Bungals (the worst franchise in football) If Lewis was white, he’d have been fired long ago

@Grulks
I agree absolutely. In baseball, the trade deadline is at the end of July (then there’s the waiver trade thing until the end of August and yes I know you don’t want to hear about baseball on a football site). July is well past the halfway point in the season where certain teams can clearly see whether they are buyers (have a chance), or sellers (didn’t meet expectations, blow up the ship).
Football should have a week 10 trade deadline. I think we’d see a lot more trades this way, and we’d see some good teams become elite.
