The Cincinnati Bengals have announced that linebacker Darryl Blackstock has been suspended four games for violating the league’s policy regarding anabolic steroids and related substances.
“I’ve apologized to my coaches and teammates for an unfortunate mistake,” Blackstock said. “I did not intentionally violate the policy, but I know it’s my responsibility to use only approved nutritional supplements, and I didn’t realize I was taking an over-the-counter product that included a banned substance. I also want to apologize to our fans, and I’ll do everything I can to be ready to come back strong next month.”
Wow. That’s the closest any NFL player has come to actually accepting responsibility for a violation of the policy. And while it’s admirable that Blackstock admits that he took an over-the-counter product containing a banned substance, it was also stupid for him not to check the NFLPA’s approved list of substances.
As expected, the Bengals also re-signed running back Kenny Watson, who was cut last week to create a roster spot for receiver Chris Henry.

One of the few guys to have the balls to admit it’s his fault. Good on the lad.

Anyone that doesn’t think the league is rampant with drug use is foolish or very naive. Anywhere there is a lot of money to be made and an edge to be gained people will cheat. I don’t condone it but I try not to live with my head in the sand either.

Has it become so bad that we now when someone gets caught breaking the rules, we give him sympathy if they just play the personal responsibility card? Fine, he’s sorry for what he did. But he he should have thought about that before taking the supplements.

If “performance enhancement” only enhanced his performance enough to play special teams and in occasional nickel packages for both the Bengals and the Cardinals, I’d suggest he ask for his money back and call Shawn Merriman for the good stuff.
