Amid reports that the NFL is reviewing tape of the hit from Cards safety Adrian Wilson that knocked Bills quarterback Trent Edwards out of a game that Buffalo eventually lost by 24 points, ESPN’s Ron Jaworski declared Monday on PTI that it was a “legitimate hit.”
Jaws noted that Wilson had his face up when he struck Edwards, and that the concussion likely arose when Edwards’ head hit the ground. And Jaworski kinda/sorta suggested that it was Edwards’ only fault for not picking up a “third level” (we love it when Jaws uses jargon) defender.
While the hit reportedly won’t be reviewed based on the prohibition against helmet-to-helmet contact, the rule regarding unnecessary contact comes into play, given that Wilson possibly slammed his body onto Edwards.
So we’ll respectfully disagree with the bespectacled analyst. And we’ll all find out within the next few days who’s right, and who isn’t.

My question is what specific injury caused the rule of defenseless player/roughing the passer to lead to the increase of fines and suspensions. As Florio has pointed out the NFL addresses problems after the fact. Examples of rule changes are the Horse collar which was changed after T.O. broke his ankle from Roy Williams doing it. Another is Ty Law taking advantage of bumping recievers after 5 yards, making the illegal contact rule.

No more sacks on the QB. How pissed is YA Tittle right now? I am in my late 20’s and just from old game film that Dude got hit like that at least once every series. This is a game that has a huge following with old school ‘blue collar’ types. That is the gme we want to watch. Late hits fine and suspend as much as you want. Spearing your opponent should get you at least 2 games. You want to stop helmet to helmet hits. Take them off. The hard plastic shell is what lead to it. Take the shell away.

I think Florio would like to see the players in dresses…
Gee let me think who I should side with, the former QB, or the lawyer?

naturally florio goes against the cards on this. The hit was legit. To be fair, I also believe the hit the previous week on Boldin was also legit, and there should have been no penalty for that one either. And I am a cards fan. Are you actually going to post this one florio?

My question is at what point is the face mask not a part of the helmet? A hit to the bottom of the mask like that is the same thing as an uppercut by a boxer which can surely lead to a concussion. So if the goal is to decrease hits that lead to concussions, why would this hit not be one of those?

Looked legiimate to me. No intentional head to head, honestly he barely hit his head. Also, the ground caused the concussion…
Florio, did you ever play tackle football? It could happen to anyone at anytime!!

Careful with that, Mr. Mike.
Jaws knows those Concussion-Shots on the QB.
He can remember all the ones he suffered,
so he’s a league expert.
He can’t remember what team he was on at the time.
But he can remember all 287 of those hits vividly.

Just like I said in the post comments yesterday. Florio is always fishing for controversy. That’s what drives site hits. This wouldn’t bother me one bit if he didn’t attempt to pass himself off as a journalist over a blogger.

It’s getting harder and harder to explain to kids what football was like back when it was just a game. By the time the grand kids are old enough to be curious, football could be played on a TV with two control pads by celebrity ex players so nobody will get hurt.

He still launched himself, and you can see Boldin go limp as soon as he gets hit, so I don’t think the ground caused the concussion.

looks like you’re alone on this one Florio. Perhaps you should cover a sport that has less contact. MAN UP!

When I first saw the hit, I couldn’t believe there was no flag. Once a QB releases the ball, the defender is supposed to let up. Obviously at full speed, Wilson can’t just stop on a dime, but he didn’t even attempt to lighten up. In fact, he left his feet and completed the tackle with full force, driving Edwards into the ground. You can see him arching his back to create extra force as he lands on top of Edwards with a crushing blow. Edwards head slams into the ground because Wilson’s helmet was firmly pressed against Trent’s face mask. Edwards’ chin strap was up around his nose, and helmet nearly knocked off, indicating that there was upward pressure on the face mask.

Eric Smith’s hit on Bolden legit? The league thought it was so legit they went right past fining him and straight to suspending him. Wilson’s hit and the subsequent piling into the ground is borderline dirty too. So many of these tough guys hit with their helmets. Put them back into the old suspension helmets and see how many guys would fly around using their helmets as weapons.

The hit was legit, but whether he intentionally drove him into the ground is a different story. Sure looked like Wilson has a little something extra for Edwards there…

JAWORSKI LAST NITE IN MNF game also called an clear and obvious hit by a players helmet something he wouldnt penalize for.
sunday in that ariz /buf game soon after that hit on edwards, probably in revenge bills player hit warner right in his chin with his helmet. blood was seen around warners chin and then it was taped up on sidelines.

I agree with Florio on this one. It definitely wasn’t a “helmet to helmet” hit so that’s out the window. But the defender absolutely drove an explosed “defenseless” player into the ground which is illegal. I hope Edwards is ok and I hope the league does the right thing and gives Wilson a fine, but no suspension. That’s where they screwed up the Eric Smith/Anquan Boldin hit - the suspension was too much.

This is FOOTBALL not soccer! It is a high risk HIGH reward game. If you start taking the hard hitting out of football you are going to start getting rid of fans. Whatever happened to the days receivers feared going across the middle of the field? If the NFL really cared about the players it would return to a natural field instead of a hard one.
