We mentioned recently that a quote from agent Gary Uberstine suggested that former Raiders coach Lane Kiffin might be thinking about suing owner Al Davis for that attempt to verbally give Kiffin a second exit route for digested foodstuffs.
Jay Glazer of FOX reports that those close to Kiffin are urging him to file a defamation lawsuit.
Kiffin’s grievance for unpaid wages will be submitted to the Commissioner this week, since the standard coaching contract requires any such controversies to be pursued in that owner-friendly forum.
But because the statements made by Davis against Kiffin came after the employment relationship ended, Kiffin should be able to file suit in a court of law against Davis.
The argument in favor of suing is that Kiffin’s future earnings could be harmed by the things Davis said about the young coach. The argument against such a move would be the damage that Kiffin could due to his future earnings by coming off as excessively litigious.

Why the hell does he need to be pushed? I would have hired Florio the second after the Crypt Keeper told me I wasn’t getting my cash!

Don’t know that it hurts his future earnings that much more than they already have…if anything it can only help. By the way, if Kiffin looks to litigious after one lawsuit, let me say that again, one lawsuit, then there is a serious problem in the NFL upper management. Al Davis has sued the NFL more times than I can remember and no one is calling him to litigious.

I think Kiffin would make a TON more money just writing a tell all book about his tenure with the raiders and everything that happened during his time there.

Kiffin should just write a book about it and go on tour. Davis will be dead before he could collect on a judgment

I’m no lawyer, but I wondered after the press conference, if he could possibly do such a thing. Al did call him a “lier”, and even if it were the truth, I am not sure if you can just go on live TV and say such a thing.
Then again, after the biased and unprofessional bashing Al and the Raiders took on the NFLN this moring, I don’t see why Al couldn’t sue them for defamation of the franchise. It would be just as frivolous, and no different as lane sueing Al over calling him names.

Kiffen would have to first prove that anyone takes anything Al Davis says seriously before proving that he defamed his character.
Heck, given the reputation Davis has, Kiffen’s stock went UP after Al’s rant.
Seems like a stretch of a lawsuit to me.

Kiffin’s a whiner. He shouldn’t have brought a knife to a gun fight. He should shut his pie hole and go back to college and learn how to coach.
70 yard field goal????? In order to prove defamation you must first prove that the statements are untrue….. good luck lance… I mean Lane.

Dumb coach tries to kick a 76 yard field goal in a close game boy that was weird. Fact of the matter He’s been trying his hardest to get fired and now he’s thinking of suing what a tool.

“Kiffen would have to first prove that anyone takes anything Al Davis says seriously before proving that he defamed his character.”
He’d only have to print out about 6 posts from Florio on this site to accomplish that.

Loser Lane hasn’t filed a lawsuit because he’s in fact a liar and a low life for sabotaging the team he was coaching.
He’s done in the NFL, exposed like a goat on a hill.
Hey Lane, try kiddie ball, even the ultimate loser, Pete Carroll, looks good there, lol.

May you never get old, bigblue.
If by chance you do though, I hope you end up half as rich and powerful as Al Davis.
