Cowboys coach Wade Phillips presents, to say the least, a very different demeanor and style than his predecessor, Bill Parcells.
Phillips is a nice guy. Parcells isn’t.
But not many nice guys make good coaches. In a sport where players are asked to ignore pain and fatigue and extreme heat and bitter cold, nice guys might have a hard time getting players to comply.
Nice guys are too — what’s the word? — nice.
According to Jennifer Floyd Engel of the Ft. Worth Star Telegram, Cowboys players during the Parcells area dreaded film session after a loss. Under Phillips, it’s no big thing.
“We are not really afraid of film session,” an unnamed Cowboys player recently said.
The challenge for coaches in the modern, free-agency driven NFL is to find a way to press buttons without unnecessarily bruising psyches. Or bodies. Players who have options will often gravitate toward coaches with a reputation for not being, well, assholes.
Then again, that dynamic could make it easier for the not-so-nice coaches to identify the free agents who want to win. Because those players realize that accountability is a key component of success in the sport, and that’s likely one of the reasons why guys like Parcells and Bill Belichick and other coaches perceived as something other than creampuffs consistently win more games than they lose. The players who want a coach who’ll get the most out of his team will realize that, while life might be easy under a nice guy, there won’t be many trophies on the shelf.

won’t matter unless they go on a losing streak. if they lose 2-3 games in a row, all the pricks on that team will freak out.

I doubt opposing coaches fear Wade, too. The Cowboys are a team that wins with talent, not coaching… particularly since half of their prior coaching staff packed up and headed to Miami.

saintsfan504 i take it that your hatered for the cowboys roots from the fact that the saints have never Won a SuperBowl or even been to one and the Cowboys have won 5 superbowls and been to 8. Dont worry. Maybe reggie bush will start averageing more than 3.5 yards a game. By the way, Don’t forget to get your popcorn ready for the cowboys game tomorrow.

I dont think Tony Dungy is the “nice guy” this article is referencing.
I dont think Dungy would be an angel in the film room. Granted he may not be like the walking F-Bomb Gruden, but he would be the kind of guy that makes you feel shameful for not doing your job.
This article is more or less stating that the players dont respect Wade. They may not disrespect him, but they certainly are not going out of their way for him either.
I hope (although Im not holding my breath) that Cincy pulls off a victory this sunday, because the Cowboys are a bad loss away from things blowing up.

Well there are other examples. Barry Switzer, the new and improved Tom Coughlin, for a very recent example. I’m not sure how much of a hardass he is these days but it’s a cinch that he’s not as bad as he used to be. Dick Vermeil.

It’s amazing. They lose one game by two points to a division rival, and Wade is a cream puff, and the cowboys suck. Last week they were going to the Superbowl. When they lose in December and January (like they have for the past few years) then throw the dirt on them.

Kind of like saying short qb’s are likely to succeed in the NFL because doug flutie made it. Or little linebackers will be fine since zack Thomas made it. Late round qb’s will eventually be great just like tom Brady. You can find a hall of fame rb in late draft rounds because terrell Davis made it. Or how about, it doesn’t matter what your record is because the raiders won that superbowl . Listen dumb dumbs, the odds of a nice coach winning a superbowl are lower than a mean guy. A few exceptions don’t affect the probabilities, because they are exceptions.

Wade Phillips is the George W. Bush of football coaches.
A 91 IQ at best.
I guarantee a meltdown in the playoffs. I just hope the cowgirls can muster a great regular season, so the world can watch the inevitable in the playoffs.
The look of another “shocking” failure on JJ’s face is just topping on the cake.

That was not Florio’s point, even though when Dungy got fired as head coach of the Bucs, they replaced him with Gruden who can be a bit of a jerk who sounds like a character out of a Martin Scorcese movie at times, and look what happened to the Bucs….oh that is right, they won the Super Bowl. Dungy got on a team with a high powered offense run by a very talented QB in Peyton Manning. Funny part is that Dungy should have more rings than he has with the horses he has in his proverbial stable…..Manning, Wayne, Harrison, D. Clark, and look at some of the players on defense he has: Freeney, B. Sanders. Dungy is probably more respected, but he is a nice guy. Still, of all the years he has coached as head coach, he only has the one ring.
Other “players” coaches who are “nice guys”: Norv Turner..we know how he is as a head coach.: 0 rings. Bill Cowher: 15-16 years as Steelers HC: 1 ring. Mike Tomlin, and I know it isn’t fair as he is only in his second year: first round exit in 08 playoffs to the Jags in a game that he should have won. Rod Marinelli: enough said. He coaches the hapless Lions. See the pattern? Wade Phillips: eliminated from the playoffs last season by the eventual champs, the Giants.
The two coaches who were in the last Super Bowl were Bellichick and Coughlin. Two taskmasters. Two guys who will crack the whip. Coughlin, I admit as a Giants fan, has softened a bit. However, these are two hard nosed football guys who don’t take any crap. Parcells is the same way. If I am not mistaken, both guys were coaches under Parcells, so I see where they get their attitudes from. Like Florio said, there is a reason that these guys have rings and the nice guys like Wade dont.

The cowgirls haven’t beat the Saints since 1994, and we’ve played at least about every other year during that time. That’s domination right there.

This is all ridiculous. Florio puts out the usual “jump to conclusion” and the haters lock step right behind. The percentage of a-hole coaches to nice guys will always favor the a-holes, so number of successful a-holes will naturally outnumber…
Just go down the Super Bowl coaches. Just take into account participating coaches and you’ll probably find the ratio is about the same. For every Vermeil and Flores, you will find two or three Jimmy Johnsons and Belichicks.
The position of head coach naturally caters to a more imposing figure. It’s a reach to say that’s why they are successful. There will always be more a-hole’s than not.
How many people said Coughlin was more successful last year BECAUSE he softened up? Who’s to say how valid that is, but it sure sounds like a great argument to this whole article.
And STFU, saintsfan504! No Saints fan has the legitimacy to talk smack to ANY team, much less the Cowboys. Yes 42-17 rings the bell of any team being able to win on any given day. That’s what makes this game so great. But talking smack only gets a laugh from everybody because they are all thinking “dude, your a saints fan, hush up”.
Everyday comes a story to get people on the site fightin over the Cowboys. Nice job, Florio…seriously, nice job.

Wade has ALWAYS BEEN a cream puff, not just for a 2 pt loss. Every player on the Cowboys who has a 2 year contract knows that their next coach is Jason Garrett. Its not Calculus. Why would ANYONE respect a shadow puppet coach?
As for going to the SB before last weeks loss, the only ones who had them crowned were the precious ego’s of the DALLAS fans who got emasculated by the Redskins 6 days ago. Now they are all talking about how ROMO cant win a BIG game.
And they are right. Join the Cubs and realize that winning a BUNCH of worthless games means NOTHING if you cant win em when they count.
Maybe next year…
