The uncertain status of former Raiders coach Lane Kiffin wasn’t good for the Raiders. At a minimum, the fact that Kiffin has moved on will allow the team to move forward.
But there’s a catch. As a result of Tuesday’s press conference, during which Raiders owner Al Davis gave chapter-and-verse detail regarding his case for firing Kiffin for cause, the franchise’s young franchise quarterback has learned for the first time that the only NFL head coach for whom he has played didn’t want to draft him.
“I can’t win with this guy,” Kiffin supposedly told Davis, who said that Kiffin thought Russell would be the “overweight guy” and the “uninterested guy.”
“It just kind of came out of nowhere,” quarterback JaMarcus Russell said Thursday. “I really don’t think myself or coach Kiffin or anybody else were looking for that to come out that way.”
Russell said that he thought he had a strong relationship with Kiffin, and that they would joke and exchange text messages. Now, Russell isn’t sure who to believe.
If he ends up believing Kiffin and not the organization, the Raiders might end up wishing they’d listened to Kiffin in the first place.

Al Davis is an idiot. There was no reason for even bringing that out. True or not it only hurts Russell and doesnt do anything for Davis.

A general manager or an owner is supposed to put the coach in a position to win. It’s frustrating to think that the coach didn’t want this guy, and yet the owner or the GM still decided to take him. I know this stuff happens, but it shouldn’t.

“oh Nooh, they dindint want me, wahhh waahhh. I gues I will cryinto a pile of money and eat candy until I poop myself?”
Act like you are talking about pro football not Maury’s next show.
The coach is gone and he has about 32 million reasons to think the Raiders want him.
Al just wants 3 million in free publicity if he is going to have to give it to what he feels was a rat, and you are giving it to him. They thrive on negative publicity, circling the wagons or whatever.
They are on the schedule or I would not really care about what they are doing, but you are getting carried away with the psyco babble angles.
Tell me how the offense changes without Kiffin, tell me how they are going to adapt to this coach I never heard of, do not tell me how Jamrcus feels about his ex coaches feelings.

Still trying to have a decent relationship with a QB you didn’t really want doesn’t sound like the act of a coach who is trying to get out of a job. It says something positive about Kiffin if he still tried with Russell even if he didn’t really want him as a QB. And what time frame are we looking at with these remarks made by Kiffin? If they are made before he was drafted, it was probably more out of ignorance and the thought that maybe they should go in another direction with the draft pick. Maybe Kiffin warmed up to Russell as the franchise QB and maybe really did have a positive relationship with him in the end. Great move, Al. Sound judgement on your part to undermine a young QB with good potential just to get off a parting salvo at your ex coach.

1) Even if Davis is correct re: Kiffin’s feelings for Russell (who knows?), does Davis have anything to gain by airing this? I guess it could fire Russell up… but it could also hurt his psyche.
2) Even if Kiffin didn’t want Russell, how in holy hell does that support Davis’ position that Kiffin should be fired for cause?!?! Giving your boss input such as this is grounds for dismissal? I don’t understand how this will help Davis’ case at all; in fact, it could work against him- it could show he just didn’t like Kiffin and is making up any old excuse to get him out the door.

It’s entirely possible that Kiffin felt this way on draft day 2007, and then changed course after getting to know him for awhile.

OK, weird Al may NOT be senile, but his judgment is atrocious. He gets more mean-spirited, petty and vindictive every day.
Great, we now have another overpaid, rich rookie QB who is confused about his role in the NFL. Quick, keep him away from VY before it spins outta control.

I am from San Jose and read several Local Papers….J Ryussell is not complaining about Kiffin not wanting him, if he actually didnt…Russell said Kiffin will always be his coach and cant say anything bad about him…..so real news here…just a slow news day, looking for some shock headline….
I can throw just one pic in 99 attempts if all my passes were naked boot legs to the Te or fullback screens, trust me, J Russell stinks…there is a reason Curry leads the league in missed catches % with over 10 targets, i would be dry for a week if Russell had 7 days at a dunking machine

i think al has mms. male menopause syndrome. he’s like that cranky 80 year old neighboor that cusses at you when you were a kid for running through his yard, cause that’s all he has to do all day, cuss at anyone and everyone. so you got cleveland, cincinnati, oakland, 3 teams that will NEVER be afactor in the afc with current ownership and or management, i am sure the other 13 afc teams love it.

Just because he did not want him at first, does not mean they could not develop a relationship over time. He may have had a different pick in mind initially thats all.

What’s Al got against Russell in airing this issue out at this time??
“The Raiders will be back…We will win…We will win!!! We don’t re-build..we re-load!! The Raiders don’t need a disciplinarian for a coach! We do not blitz….This team can win…..blah…blah….,” Al Davis speaks. Sic transit gloria mundi!!

It was pretty well known before and after the draft that Russell was not Kiffin’s first choice. How Russell didn’t know, is beyond me.
Also, in the case of Ronald Curry. He dropped a few of those passes. Balls that were very catchable I might add. Not all can be blammed on Russell.

Again with the statement that Al was telling the truth. So far the number of people who believe Al Davis is dwindling daily down to Florio and who ever wrote Al’s script for the news conference.
Most likely Kiffin never said it, just Al trying to drive a wedge into the heart of his locker room.
