By the way... in regard to Bill doing things in favor of his team. Trying to impliment rules that favor his team... and other such things.

Bill Polian works for the Indianapolis Colts and not the NFL. It is not his job to do what is best for the league it is his job to do what is best for Indianapolis.

Of course he curses officials on calls against the Colts and of course he praises them on calls for the Colts.

I think he's a pig, and I hated him greatly when he worked for division rival Buffalo. But as long as he's advocating for the Colts I'll gladly put lipstick on that pig.

The buck should stop at the GM. Especially here in Indy. Polian makes it known that he is at the helm. (Bill there is no I in team)

Ufan, miles and KayC: If you are 'real' fans, STOP, stop, stop sticking up for Polian. He would not stick up for you and he deserves what he is getting. These posts are not a reflecton of the "team", the Colts. It is of the LOUDEST GM in the NFL, who makes up the rules to benefit himself (not just the team).

Polians reward should be to get removed from the competition committee and just do his job with the Colts. Honestly, who is the next loudest GM????

ufan:

In 8-9 weeks, that does not matter. These are truths that are already have been done and proven. What the 'team' does has absolutely nothing to do with Polians' conduct.

(Maybe you have a reading comprehension problem.)

I am a Colts fan, and I think that Polian does some great things. But I've never understood his penchant for shifting blame away from himself as if his job depended on it.

Bill, you are a 5 time executive of the year award winner, you don't have to blame others. Your reputation is big enough to hold some blame, even if you honestly believe it isn't your fault. Heck, it might even endear you a little.

By the way... when the team drafts a person that doesn't work out, regardless of what the reason is, who gets the blame if not the GM?

Isn't the GM directly responsible for all player aquisitions? Isn't that where the buck stops?

Let's ask this question: Why is Polian the loudest GM in the league? He does not have the balls that the other GM's have, he just has an owner that is obviously jsut as afraid of him as everyone else in the league is. Mr Irsay, why is Polian the 'boss' and not you? (Just ask him and he will tell you.)

Also the next question is: When you think of the Colts, or the face of the Colts, do you really think of Polian? No, the image we all think of is Tony. Because everyone their knows that Polian is not a good 'face' for the team.

Ufan: I no longer think you are a "fan". I think you work for/ related to Polian. You get in an argument EVERY posting that states Polian is what he is, and that is a bully. He is also Teflon. He holds everyone else accountable in the NFL, except for himself.

He is a mean, evil malicious man. Most people who know him are afraid of him. He maybe a "genious", but he does not do it alone. He has had a breakdown on his football operations side that you would not know about. (or you may if you are close to him, and he is making you write these things.) If all his scouts were doing what they were supposed to do, he probably would have had a different draft. (especially the one who cares more about puncuations on a report instead of what the ingredients are) It takes more that one man to run a football team, and now he is passing the blame publically so Jimmy Irsay can read it and know Polian is not the one to blame. Let me remind you that it only took him 10 years to get to the superbowl with Peyton and company.

Rob0769: you are right on the money!!

"So, the Colts are to blame for Ed Johnson’s actions off the filed?"

No, but they are to blame for depending on a guy with Ed Johnson's history of actions off the field. But you probably missed that point completely while you were reaching for your box of tissues.

Ufan4real,

Sorry, but it was Polian's fault for not having depth at the position where he knew Johnson could be cut at any time. Polian has made some brilliant personnel decisions over his career, but this wasn't one of them.

I am sorry you Colts fans get so defensive when Polian screws up, but he did. The DT position was thin to begin with and he didn't have a plan in place for the inevitable. It doesn't make him a bad GM, but it doesn't excuse him from his responsibility. Granted Polian will never admit he made a mistake.

You do not have a zero tolerence policy with a player and not have at least a stop gap measure in place incase he violates the zero tolerance policy. At least you don't if you want to be absolved of all blame when the team suffers for it.

"robo769: Excuse me, but I think Polian was ready for that. Johnson was on a short leash. Johnson knew he would be fired/cut, whatever if he messed up when he signed with the Colts. How can Polian be blamed for that?"

Polian was so ready for it that the Colts have implemented a new contest where one lucky fan who attends the game for each home game can win the right to start at DT to replace Johnson. I'm sure there has to be a few hundred people who attend each Colts game who are more talented at the DT position than the guys they have playing now.

How was Polian prepared when he really had no one to replace Johnson? If you know one of your starters is a problem and could be cut because of it, you have depth at the position. Even before Johnson was cut and Pitcock retired, the depth at DT was rather thin. Polian didn't have a contingency plan for if Johnson was cut and I don't think he is going to be lucky to find a Booger McFarland type of player at the trade deadline to bail him out of his shortsighteness at the position like in 2006.

Rob0769

Come on if Polian is going to be used by you and likely minded others as a example on bad judgement when picking players, then you and others like you need to get off your high and mighty thrown and look at the other 31 teams and their questionable picks.

Come back and preach to us when other teams don't display the same negative fault.

Good call holding management responsible for not having the DTs they wanted. The Bengals get criticised plenty for taking chances on guys with histories, and got criticised this year for drafting Pat Simms at DT in the third round because he took a year off from football in college after his sister died (i.e. people questioned his passion for the game), so I don't see why Colts' management should not get the same treatment.

PS The Colts have had 10 different players arrested since the beginning of 2005, same number as the Bengals. Any snide remarks about the "gang of criminals" Polian and Dungy have assembled in Indy?

"So, the Colts are to blame for Ed Johnson’s actions off the filed?"

The Colts aren't to blame for Ed Johnson's actions. They are to blame for not having a contingency plan in place for when Ed Johnson inevitably screwed up. This is a guy who got expelled from college for "sexual misconduct". He is a bad seed who was inevitably going to do something to get him in hot water. Polian should have been read for that.

So, the Colts are to blame for Ed Johnson's actions off the filed?

When did the other 31 NFL teams get a crystal ball? The Colts obviously did not because they would have known with certainty that Pitcock was going to walk away.

Maybe, just maybe, Polian is stating a FACT when he says the Titans are healthier than the Colts.

"There is a philosophy basically that says, ‘Call Nothing,’ or, ‘Call Only That Which is Blatantly Obvious.’ I think in the end what that does is hurt the game in the long run."
I'd rather a game that was decided by the play on the field and no the politics of officiating.

NaPolian is nothing but a sociopathic narcissist. He may be a brilliant GM, but he is a horrible human being. It is no secret he isn't well liked around the league.

It isn't surprising that Polian would not take responsibility for his own personnel mistakes. I know the Patriots and other teams look for players who have a passion for football. Many teams would have passed on Pitcock since it seemed pretty obvious he did not want to do what it takes to be successful to play the game. Many teams would have a contingency play for if he retired (assuming he did seriously consider it his rookie season) and if Ed Johnson slipped up (knowing his history, it was only a matter of time).

Polian's bullying of the officials and the league's offices is also legendary. I remember him last year praise the officials for a game where most of the world felt the Colts got several big questionable/wrong calls. Now that he got a few against the Colts, the guy won't let it go. I bet if those calls went against Jacksonville instead of the Colts, Polian would be championing the refs for clearly making the right call.

Polian is the same guy who got into a physical altercation with a Jets official because he accused them of doing something many people suspect the Colts of doing for the longest time - pumping crowd noise onto the field. He is notorious for cheering in the press box which is a seriously cardinal sin. He has helped to manipulate the Competition Committee to get rules favorable to his club. The guy is just an arse.

You're absolutely right: when a player loses his passion for the game or breaks the law it is the team's fault. The player bears no responsibility hor his behavior; the responsibility lies with the GM of the team.

And the commenters are also absolutely right: when a receiver is pulled down by his shoulder pad before the ball gets to him -- resulting in an interception return for a TD -- the receiver's team has absolutely no right to complain about the call. I mean, that team's owner is on the Competition Committee! How dare he criticize a blatant non-call? He is only allowed to complain about poor referreeing if his team has never committed a penalty -- period.

And how dare he admit that injuries have sapped some of his team's strength. Doesn't he know that injuries play NO PART in a team's fortunes? Just look at the Patriots! They are exactly as good as they were last year. The very idea that Polian would admit that injuries have dropped the Colts below a division rival is ABSURD!!! He must be the biggest jerk in the history of professional sports!

I, for one, think it's totally obvious that Polian should be in jail.

i am absolutely SHOCKED to hear the Polian is bichin' about officiating in a game! the guy is a worm, whose team never has committed a penalty, and every loss is caused by an official...get over it Bill, the officiating isn't perfect for any team and penaltys always seem to just be called whenever the officials see fit, so deal chump.

It's also the GM's responsibility to have in place backups that can take the place of the starters, at least a solid player.

I think Polian is walking a fine line here. He has to remember that there are 32 people that own the NFL. Someone is eventually going to expect the Colts owner to shut his GM because it's hurting the NFL.
