In the wake of Wednesday’s story regarding the manner in which the Cowboys have shut down all efforts by cornerback Pacman Jones to do some of the non-football things that made certain members of the Dallas teams of the 1990s legendary, a league source tells us that Jones is trying to move out of his Cowboys-issued apartment.
In turn, the Cowboys are trying their darnedest to keep Pacman in place.
And so the situation continues to remind us of the manner in which Mike Tyson was handled. Those who stood to make a buck off Tyson’s boxing skills aimed at protecting Tyson from himself, and they generally succeeded (but for an unfortunate incarceration arising from that rape charge) until he no longer was crapping golden eggs and/or biting ears. Left to his own devices, Tyson became even more of a cartoonish caricature.
The same thing will happen to Pacman. The Cowboys will do what they can to keep him out of trouble, they’ll do nothing to change his desire to engage in activities that can lead to trouble, and then when he’s no longer able to play football at a high level (or when they grow weary of babysitting him) he’ll be on his own.
Until he’s in a cell.

The Cowboys do have counseling programs to help players grow up and act like real men (pay their bills, take care of their families, stay out of trouble). Of course, the player has to want to change. All the team can do is provide the resources to assist the change. By all the appearances, despite his protestation to the contrary, Pacman doesn’t really want to change. He just wants to not get suspended again for behaving like a spoiled brat. That’s not the Cowboys’ fault. Nor should they be faulted for protecting their investment in him. If he wants to continue screwing up, that is his business.

Thanks, dink, for making me defend Pacman Jones….but I think the comparison to Mike Tyson is pretty ridiculous. Tyson is, by nature, a violent person. Pacman is just an idiot who does stupid things. Had Pacman been the one who shot up that nightclub, it’d be a different story, but he’s not.

Florio, even the blondest of new-age pop-psychologists will tell you that no one can help you unless you’re willing to help yourself.
So, I wonder, how do you find honor and self-worth in blaming the the Dallas ownership for anything even remotely disingenous when it is the ownership that is actually doing more than you and Pacman himself toward helping this guy?
I hope your post is just an act and not a sample of your level of arrogance.

“Cowboys-issued apartment”? Is that provided free of charge to Jones? If so, is it being counted under the salary cap?

And Adam Jones aka Pacman (only on the field and only to his team) wants to be an adviser and mentor to the Bengals Chris Henry? You know there is an owner in northern California that could use a few more players like Jones.
If Adam does not wake up and smell the coffee he will be out of the league permanently and very soon.

So is this the beginning of the end, the middle of the end, or the end of the end for the cowboyses? There is a saying where I come from-”when the pot starts to boil, you can bet that pretty soon T.O. Will start to pout, then try to overdose on ambien, and pac man will start punching strippers and shooting babies” I am not really sure what it means but I think it fits here.

So, tell me what is different about this scenario, that is different about any other professional sports figure? They are all pieces of meat. You just love to attack the Cowboys. How much does any team care about 95% of the players that have played for them after they have served their purpose? We see how much Green Bay cared about Favre. Why are the teams responsible for these guys after they are “done”? Why should they be? These are grown men, not kids. Why does the media continue to dwell on any little Dallas Cowboy non-issue? I know why, it’s goot be because they are AMERICA’S TEAM, YOUR TEAM, The DALLAS COWBOYS.
