The Cowboys have successfully kept cornerback Pacman Jones out of trouble during his time with the team. According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, however, it hasn’t been easy.
Unnamed sources in the Cowboys organization have described Jones as a “work in progress.” He is required as part of his reinstatement to stay away from parties, nightclubs, and strip clubs. He reportedly was reprimanded for going to a Hooters restaurant in August.
Recently, the Cowboys prevented Jones from following through on plans to headline a Celebrity Beach Volleyball event.
“What we are doing is trying not to be as visible,” owner Jerry Jones said. “It’s a question of visibility. . . . It’s in his best interest to keep that profile low.”
For Pacman Jones, it has meant staying away from any and all social events.
“We are trying to protect each other from being in the wrong situation,” defensive tackle Tank Johnson said. “They are trying to protect you. If Jerry wants to protect us and he feels it’s not in our best interest to be there . . . they are protecting you. As a little kid, you might throw a fit. As a grown man, you know it’s in our best interest.”
It’s a far cry from the Cowboys of the 1990s. In the new book Boys Will Be Boys, author Jeff Pearlman describes former Dallas middle linebacker Robert Jones as a guy who was so conflicted by his devotion to his wife and his teammates’ love of the nightlife and strip clubs and all that that implies that it actually affected Robert Jones’ performance on the field.
For the current Jones who plays defense for the Cowboys, it remains to be seen whether an all-out effort to make him into something that he simply isn’t off the field will keep him from being all that he can be on the field.

How do the Cowboys stop him? Tell him he’s “grounded”?
Seriously, I agree with what the Cowboys are doing, but how on Earth are they doing it legally? By preventing Jones from headlining that beach volleyball cr@p, didn’t they prevent him from his right to make money in a legal way?

Tank Johnson has seriously been a model citizen. You could not ask for more from him. It is sad that the Cowboys have to be these guys’ guardians but maybe they did not have one growing up and hopefully it will help them have happy lives after football.
Sounds like Adam “P-Man” Jones is walking a very fine line. Maybe He should go by P-Man. It could have multiple Connotations. Like Pretty Man or Pussy Man. But it also could mean Penis Man. Hmm. On second thought, Adam sounds good.

Slow Joe…
They can’t legally keep him from doing anything he wants. They can, however, cut him if he does something that they don’t like. If he can make more money at stuff like these volleyball events than he can make by playing out a career in the NFL, by golly that’s exactly what he should be doing. If it weren’t for the NFL, he wouldn’t be asked to do things like appear at a volleyball event in the first place. He’d me mowing your grass or working at Fatburger or snatching purses or something along those lines.

SlowJoe, I’m just guessing, but I’d bet Jerry Jones had language included in the Artist Formerly Known as Pacman’s contract setting conditions on what outside “employment” Pac is allowed to take part in. I know a lot of NBA players’ contracts include language that voids the contract if they ride motorcycles, go skydiving, etc.
There are a lot of other jobs that set conditions on what kind of outside employment a person may or may not take part in. I don’t know if hosting the beach volleyball gig would fall under that heading, but my main point is that employers can legally restrict their employees’ ability to make money in legal ways. How cool would it have been to see Pac start a brawl at a beach volleyball game, though?

He’s also only allowed to be in the Champagne room when he visits his “establishments.” Low visibility, you know.

Wow! I agree with Slow Joe!
Players make a lot of money from personal appearances. Hell, every other week I see something in the paper where an Eagle or Phillie is out at some car dealer or bar. For a second teamer, I’ll bet it’s a significant part of their weekly pay. On the other hand, for a guy like TFPFKA-Pacman, giving up part of his income to assure he continues getting most of his income (namely the check with the star on it) might be a fair trade off.

I have a friend in “the know”. Jerry Jones has private security shadow PacMan every time he leaves his house and they have the permission of Jerry Jones (must have been some agreement made with Pac) to confront and remove PacMan from any potentially damaging situation.

Has anyone started a pool on Adam Jones and Mr. Owens?
Adam Jones - how soon before he is in Goodell’s dog house again?
Owens - how soon before he has melt down and is doing sit ups with Drew Rosenhaus holding a press conference?

The problem is that Pacman has shown a serious lack of judgment regarding the situations he puts himself in and the people he hangs out with. Much as an alcoholic cannot have a “social” drink, Pacman hasn’t learned how to have a good time without getting into trouble.

Wow nygiants2008, you had to have a friend “in the know” to tell you what everybody else already knew? Fact is even before he was traded to the Cowboys, Pacman found himself a cop to pal around with to help keep himself out of potentially problematic situations. Sad that he needs this kind of support to keep him out of trouble, but if it works, it works. Maybe one day he can be weaned off of this kind of supervision.

mdel1120 By looking out for those players, he is looking out for the Jerry Jones. So he’s not looking out for the players? Then why the restrictions? By looking out for himself he is ultimatly looking out for those players and vica versa. Dillhole.
