Titans quarterback Chris Simms said on Tuesday’s Dan Patrick Show that former starter Vince Young could be returning to practice this week.

Young suffered a hamstring strain and a sprained MCL during a Week One win over Jacksonville.  The knee injury occurred after Young returned to action after reportedly trying to remove himself from the game after supposedly hurting the hamstring.

But even if Young is able to play right now, it’s highly unlikely that coach Jeff Fisher will risk screwing up a very good thing by removing Kerry Collins and re-inserting Young.  But for an injury to Collins, Young simply shouldn’t see the field again this year.

Then, after the 2008 season, the Titans will have to decide whether to keep Young, trade him, cut him, or let him retire without owing any of his bonus money back to the team.

Meanwhile, Peter King of SI.com mentioned in his MMQB column that Young is rebuffing efforts by Collins to mentor him:  “What a waste,” King writes.  “Collins has seen too much, and he’s a selfless person at this stage of his career.  Whoever’s advising Young should tell him Collins would be a smart addition to his inner circle.”

For as good as the Titans now are, just imagine how good they’d be if they had poked around their own backyard and drafted the humble kid from Vanderbilt instead of the superstar from Texas.
