On Saturday night, the league’s MVP for the 2005 season gave a sideline interview during ESPN’s coverage of the Alabama-Georgia game, and the topic of his possible return to the NFL wasn’t even mentioned.
And it could be that he’s back in the NFL pretty soon.
Shaun Alexander, who was cut by the Seahawks earlier this year and who has been largely ignored since then, might find himself in the middle of a rush to secure his services.
The Steelers have temporarily (so they say) lost Willie Parker to a knee sprain, and rookie Rashard Mendenhall is done for the year with a fractured shoulder blade. Thus, Alexander could be getting a call from the Steelers as soon as today — if he hasn’t heard from them already.
And that possibility might prompt another AFC North team to make a play for Alexander. Keep an eye on the Bengals, who might very well try to preempt Pittsburgh by inking Shaun ASAFP.
This potential tug-o-war between division rivals could potentially coax other interested teams out of the weeds, too. If any team is truly interested in Alexander, the window of opportunity to get him under contract this year could be closing.
Then again, the Steelers might opt to bring back the devil that they know in Najeh Davenport, who spent the past couple of seasons with the Steelers before being released. Other available veteran free agents include Cedric Benson and Tatum Bell.
The Steelers should also consider calling the Titans about the availability of Chris Henry, a 2007 second-round pick who has gotten lost on a roster that features Chris Johnson and LenDale White. (Then again, the Titans would probably want more for him than the Steelers are willing to sacrifice for a 12-game fill-in.)
Alexander has visited the Bengals, Saints, and Lions since being dumped by the Seahawks.

The Steeler would never bring in a back as soft as Alexander. The fans and players would revolt. They would bring back Davenport, like you suggested, or even give Cedric Benson a try long before they would ever even consider a marshmallow like Alexander.

Gary Russell will be signed from the practice squad. Dookie knows the playbook. Jones has visited. Alexander has no shot of being signed by the Steelers.

Wouldn’t it make more sense for them to resign Najeh Davenport?

I was thinking the same thing about the middle of the second quarter last night, but there has to be a reason the Lions and Bangles didn’t want him.

@AllSeeingEye - “The Steelers would never bring in a back as soft as Alexander”. Well being as though two of their backs seems banged up, they seem to be making a year out of it. Why stop now?

I agree, Russell should be put on the active roster. I doubt Najeh will be back, M. Moore has Dookie’s old role as the 3rd down back/return man. We need another O-Lineman to fill in for Simmons.

Najeh Davenport is the logical choice!! Even Tatum Bell, or even give Cedric Benson(Boozenator)before Steelers would call Sir Sean a try!!
Pittburgh is home of the Steelers not the pussies!!!
The Steelers need to get a back up (OG)or right guard off the wire too!
Maybe look for a rookie OT free agent Too!

@ButchD
I’m a Steeler fan, and I gotta say that was pretty damn funny.
Anyways, Najeh was a good spell back but performed horribly when Parker went out…
Bell, not so much…
I think they’d be wise to work out both CedBen and Shaun. I do wanna see what Russel has too.

Alexander was a good running back for a time, but his stats are grossly inflated by the fact that he ran behind Walter Jones and Steve Hutchinson. With the patchwork offensive line that the Steelers have put together, this past-his-prime guy would likely not help much if at all.
