Since the NFL is now prohibiting teams and coaches and G.M.’s and owners from criticizing bad calls by game officials, the media has an even greater obligation to do it for them.
So here we go.
With the Titans inside the Minnesota five and leading by six points, 13-7, Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher opted to take his chances on fourth down and more than a yard to go.
Using play-action via a fake to speedy rookie tailback Chris Johnson, who already has scored one short-yardage touchdown on the day, quarterback Kerry Collins threw a short pass to receiver Justin Gage, who ran a quick out route from near the right edge of the tackle box.
Gage was instantly swarmed by Vikings defenders. He spun and lunged and eventually lost control of the ball before the whistle. By all appearances, Gage didn’t make it to the stick for the first down.
Enter the line judge, who spotted the ball inside the one, well beyond the point to which Gage had moved the ball.
And so the Vikings challenged the play.
Based on our review of the replay, Gage simply didn’t make it to the stick. Also, the ball was clearly out before Gage was down. The only question, in our view, was whether the replay showed conclusively that the Vikings had recovered the ball. (In our estimation, none of the angles available on the FOX broadcast were clear on that point.)
The referee is Pete Morelli, who once created a big stir via a horrible replay ruling in a playoff game between the Steelers and the Colts. Morelli went under the hood, and he said only that the ruling on the field stands.
The next image was of the ball resting inside the Minnesota one, obviously (in our view) beyond the point at which Gage had gained.
And then the increasingly portly LenDale White of the Titans scored a touchdown on the next play.
At a minimum, Morelli bungled this one by not explaining the ruling. Did Gage fumble? Was there inconclusive evidence that the Vikings recovered? Or was the ruling only that there wasn’t conclusive evidence as to where the ball should be re-spotted?
We think that Morelli opted to take the easy way out on this one, and that’s not the way a referee should be earning his paycheck.
UPDATE: The Vikings have cut the deficit to ten at the half. Thanks to a fumble by Titans quarterback Kerry Collins, the Vikes had a chance to trim it to seven, but Ryan Longwell’s 48-yard attempt shtoinked off the upright. Our pal Chris Myers of FOX made an obscure Caddyshack reference, proclaiming that the Vikings get nothing, and will have to like it.

Who else is sick and tired of the zebra’s winning the games, and taking it out of the hands of the players? Who else is sick and tired of the major story-line coming out of the weekend being a horribly blown call by an official? I mean, I’m used to the Vikings getting jobbed by the officials; it happens several times a season, but will it ever end?
Halftime:
Titans 13
Vikings 10

In the first year or teo of replay, refs used to cme back from under the hood and say (honestly) that “there’s inconclusive video evidence of . . .” the fumble, the spot, etc.
Then the NFL decided that this sounded too wishy-washy, and it invited dumb criticism of “why spend all the time and money on instant replay if ity’s not going to give us a crystal clear answer on very play.”
Now, the refs never say “inconclusive.” I suspect the NFL has told them not to. If they can’t see what happened, they’ll just say “the ruling on the field stands.”

How can the NFL afford for the officiating to be such a joke? We need full-time, well trained refs. This is a professional league;it should have professional refs - not fat, old, blind part-time insurance salesmen.

No comment yet on the Hochuli call against Peppers in Carolina? Whiped out a TD Interception with a horrible call on a bogus roughing the passer. Wow. Jerry Jones was right. Quick to throw the flag.

As a Viking fan and a fan of the NFL it’s dissapointing to see such game changing calls every week. The integrity of the game is in question and the NFL is looking like the new NBA. That call was absolutely horendus but it comes as no surprise. Replays mean nothing when it comes to the Vikes. Instant replay was implemented to get the calls right but it isn’t working. The officials wont admit when their wrong.

The crew in Tampa might as well be wearing Bucs jerseys. Questionable spots, illegal contact penalties on Packers DB’s where there is little
contact or the offensive player is doing the same thing. Apparently, the Genius Gruden complained to the refs before the game about the Packers DB’s. There should be no contact between officials and team members until the coin flip.
And I get to experience the brilliance of Tony Siragusa also.
What a wonderful day.

Bad calls are a part of the game. There were a ton of them today. It’s a shame but none the less a good team over comes the bad calls.
Childress will probably be the coach of the Vikes for all of this year and maybe next year because the Wolfe family will honor his contract. I get that and I respect the Wolfe family for commitment to the contact.
Here’s the stats on our Offensive genius.
2006 the Vikes averaged 16.6 points a game
2007 the Vikes averaged 22.8 points a game
2008 the Vikes are averaging 17.7 points a game
That’s an overall average to date of 19 points a game.
No playoffs at 19 points a game
No playoffs at a 1-3 start
I think we will be lucky to hit 8-8
The only positive thing about this is it’s gotten to the point where I know the that is coming. I know it won’t work. I can go do something else and not miss anything. I got alot done today.
Bill Cowher please come to Minnesota

I am a Titans fan and watched it as it happened. I would agree that he fumbled, Vikes got it but they called it Gages ball because he came out the bottom of the pile with it. The fact that you ask a STUPID question wheather he fumbled the ball or not? They didnt challenge if it was a fumble or not. The challenged the spot of the ball. The view from a angle couldn’t prove he didnt pass the line. Watch the game instead of the instant messages you get you fake football fan. They never challenged the fumble!

I was at the game … my seats are pretty much right along the south end zone goal line … in real time I thought 12 Gage got the ball got to the one … then the ref came in with his left foot spot on the one … I thought we should’ve snapped it right quick there and just ran a QB sneak to prevent Childress from throwing his flag … bu the refs held us up then he challenged it … the replays seemed to indicate he didn’t get the ball to the one … BUT … that camera was at an angle so you couldn’t really tell IMO … so with it being “inconclusive” the ruling on the field had to stand … maybe we stole one there, maybe not … we’ve been screwed so many times at home over the years we deserved one for a change …
BTW, kudos to the Vikings fans who made the trip … y’all were a lot of fun … I saw a bunch of Tarkenton, Rashad, and Randel jerseys (to name a few) … I thought that was pretty cool … this was MIN’s first trip to LP Field … I think all 31 teams have now been to LP Field … well, maybe ARZ hasn’t been here yet … ???

I don’t get replay. The refs make two mistakes on the same crucial play — a bad spot on 4th down and a missed fumble, but Childress is only allowed to choose one of the two to be reviewed?
Childress chose the spot because:
1. He was right, the Vikings stopped the runner short of the first down, and
2. If he challenged only the fumble, the refs could determine the play ended prior to the fumble (which it also wasn’t) or anything else that nullifies the fumble, then the bad spot would have stayed and the Vikings lose the challenge.
In short, Childress shose to challenge the spot because he was right and historically challenging the spot is successful more often than challenging fumbles.
What the hell is instant replay for if wrong calls are upheld. All the replay official had to do was draw the first down line on his screen and then go frame by frame and see the ball never crosses the line. There’s not much in the way of judgement to cloud the intrepretation of it.
But hey, every team thinks the refs favored the other team. Typically it’s the home team that gets the more favorable calls, which is what the Titans got today.
But Titans fans, instead of enjoying the advantage given to them, boo the refs for calling unsportsmanlike penalty on Kyle VanDenBosh.
I mean if a helmet to the balls isn’t unsportsmanlike, then what would justify the penalty? Maybe having Albert Haynesworth stomp on his throat when he was gasping for air?

The call was brutal but as a Viking fan I was most disturbed by a play that has not yet been mentioned.
Childress conceded the game with two minutes remaining. The Vikings had a 4 and 13 at their own 18 with 2 minutes to go and no timeouts. Childress chose to punt thus conceding the game and not even trying to win. Yes the odds are ridiculously long at that point but the man quit because he didn’t want to lose by a bigger margin.
The man quit. He simply wanted to be able to blame referees and his players - but he quit.

Actually, moron, it was a helmet to the knees, not his balls. Secondly, he didn’t hit him near hard enough, or late enough to draw a r oughing the passer penallty. So I guess you guys are saying this is basically the reason we won the game? Because of the refs on that Gage play? Give me a break. What about the rest of the game where once again we dominated our opponent? I heard enough boo-hooing and crying from a Viking fan next to me today about how they “get nothing” and how the refs just hate them. Right. Show me a fan that blames everything on the refs and I’ll show you one who knows nothing about football.
