We’ve been flooded with e-mail messages about the decision of a Seahawks fan site to prepare for the team’s upcoming game against the Giants by posting a list of nauseating, tasteless, and horribly inappropriate 9/11 jokes.
We weren’t going to mention the situation, because we didn’t want to push traffic to the site. But given the extent to which the story has grown legs, with stories by Deadspin and Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, we needed to chime in.
Seahawks fans, you can do better. There are plenty of other places where you can get news about your team.
Actually, Seahawks fans might have no choice. The site in question, SeahawksHuddle.com, currently is down. (Here’s the cached version of the page .) We hope that it’s because their servers collapsed under the weight of the unanticipated curiosity in the site, and we also hope that it will never be back.
If the site ever does return, we’ll be organizing an effort to contact all of its advertisers and plead with them to stop doing business with the site.
Based on the cached page, the advertisers include RazorGator, StubHub, Google, and FansEdge.
And before anyone suggests that every subject is fair game for jokes after sufficient passage of time, we don’t think that this loose rule of comedy applies to the single greatest tragedy in the history of our country. It’s been nearly 67 years since Pearl Harbor, and I’ve never heard a single joke about our men and women who were slaughtered that day.
We realize that comedy is subjective. But claiming “it was just a joke” doesn’t provide the would-be comedian a license to offend an entire nation.
While the First Amendment to our Constitution gives shmucks like this the ability to say things like that without being thrown in jail, the First Amendment also gives shmucks like us the ability to call them the shmucks that they are, and to ask anyone who does business with these shmucks to stop. Now.
UPDATE: We should have thought of this earlier. The domain for the site includes the term “Seahawks,” for which the Seahawks own the copyright. And so the Seahawks need to send these shmucks a cease-and-desist letter, pronto.

I hate the Gnats to but, like starttheseason says, that is really messed up. I can’t imagine how somebody could feel right in themselves writing jokes like that and posting. That’s just sad.

Thats pathetic. But lets be honest here….does anybody consider them REAL fans anyway? Boisterous crowd and all, but I get the distinct impression that most of them are there because their neighbors and coworkers go and they think its the thing to do. To hell with them.

That’s really low. 9/11 didn’t just have an impact in New York City, it has affected the entire country. I’m not gonna peg every Seahawks fan as being classless, but this site is over the line. Jokes or no jokes, the SeaHocks gonna get beat by the Giants, and then get completely dismantled when the Eagles go out there. I’m not gonna waste my time looking at the website, but I hope it does go down in flames.

Seahawks fans are retarded, its like they just woke up in the past few years and discovered its fun to root for your team and you can affect performances in the stadium by cheering really loud.

I was made familiar with that site prior to the Bills week 1 matchup with the seachickens.
There were numerous CLASSLESS “jokes” about the city, people, teams and worst of all Kevin Everett.
That site is run by some very unfunny idiots.
Someone should contact the Seahawks directly about them. Teams don’t usually go after private sites dedicated to them as far as I know for using their name, logo and images. But I’m betting if the brass in Seattle knew what these guys were doing to their reputation they’d have them shut down in an awful big hurry.

This offends me as a fan of comedy…..not because it’s so offensive (which yeah, it is), but because the jokes are just terrible. You can’t translate those to any other subject and have them be funny.

I am offended by almost nothing, but that is a disgrace. I like to think that 9-11 is a common bond that all Americans share. To joke about it, in my mind, is to set yourself apart from that and turn it into something trivial.

I’m a diehard Seahawks fan and I’m apalled by the site. I’ve been to the site in the past and it’s nothing special. Now, of course, I never have to go there again. Hopefully, the people responsible will no longer have the site and are unable to get another site going.
Most Seahawks fans are a boisterous fans. We’ve never won the big dance, but we love having the Seahawks to cheer on. It rains all the time here! So when there’s something to cheer about we go all out. Anyway, we aren’t retarded. We just support our football team anyway we can.
Mike, thanks for bringing this up! Sites that post trash like this have no place in football. Oh, “Seahawks” in your subject line is spelled incorrectly!

This is sad beyond words. Classless doesn’t even begin to describe this.
The true Seahawk fans should be leading the charge to demand action, not criminal action but get the newspapers and local media to denounce this, get the web site operators on camera to issue an apology and boycott them into oblivion. The web site operators may have the first amendment on their side but the good people of Seattle can act in unison bring humiliation on them and their families. I pray that they don’t have families; in-breeding is never a good thing.

I will not waste my time looking at the cached version. It does not warrent my time or energy.
It is unfortunate, that competition(s) aren’t what they should be. I have no problem with good natured ribbing, or a little competative banter amoungst players, and fans. But the hate filled spirit that comes from so many quote unquote fans today, are detrimental to the game.
I think it would serve the site owners right if their advertisers pulled the plug.
The Seahawks should publish a disclaimer as well, noting that they do not condone the message(s) conveyed by the site in question. I am sure one the Seahawks organization gets wind of the messages originationg from SeahawksHuddle.com they will indeed demand that the site owners cease and desist. As for the advertisers we can only hope they have the common decency to do the right thing. Thanks and GOD Bless

I am not defending their actions or those of anyone else. However, I would like to mention an article that I read on Yahoo (no I do not have a link) a couple of years ago. The article stated that we were beginning to heal after 9/11 and as evidence mentioned several examples of humor from around the country dealing with the tragedy (although the examples in the article were done in a tasteful way) I have not seen the page that Florio mentions and Again I only mention this because I wanted to point out that what Seahawkshuddle has done is hardly unique.

Strange how since 9/11, the government arrested individual(s) who were planning on blowing up Seattle’s Space Needle building one New Year’s Eve. I’m sure these scumbags wouldn’t be so quick to make jokes if they saw their friends and loved ones dying in such a tragedy.
People like this really make me sick.

bwwbcg.
Healing over 9/11 doesn’t mean it’s ok to make jokes about it. It’s not funny. It will NEVER be funny. Thousands of families were shattered that day. They will NEVER find it remotely funny.
If someone killed you closest loved one, would you EVER see the humor in that?
ANYONE, who makes these kinds of jokes should be called on it, and it should NEVER be seen as no big deal or becoming acceptable.
Otherwise we need to question what our society is becoming.
The Holocaust isn’t funny.
Katrina isn’t funny.
9/11 is not funny.
And they NEVER will be.
