We’ve heard through the grapevine that former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson will appear on today’s Dan Patrick Show to talk about various topics, including the alleged scissors-to-the-neck incident from 1998 between Michael Irvin and Everett McIver.
“There, dangling in his right hand, was a pair of silver scissors, bits of shredded brown skin coating the tips,” writes Jeff Pearlman in his new book, Boys Will Be Boys. “There, clutching his own throat, was Everett McIver, a 6-foot, 5-inch, 318-pound hulk of a man, blood oozing from the 2-inch gash in his neck. There, standing to the side, were teammates Erik Williams, Leon Lett and Kevin Smith, slack-jawed at what they had just seen.”
It’ll be interesting to hear what Johnson has to say about the incident, given that he was coaching in Miami at the time.
We also wonder whether Dan will ask Johnson about some of Charles Haley’s colorful, um, habits.

There, a little ashamed and chagrined, sat Jeff Pearlman in the second row of his remedial writing class.

“Interesting” article on Haley. Now I know why Jimmy Johnson’s hair was always perfect, even in the Vet when the wind was blowing like a hurricane. Guess that’s why Irvin started using coke too.

Who cares? Isn’t Pearlman about 10 years past anyone giving a crap about what the cowboys did back then?

I didn’t know that the “Clerks” writer/director/producer/star played for the cowboys (see picture linked in the above article).

I gotta correct Pearlman here.
“later pleaded no contest to a felony drug charge and received a five-game suspension, 800 hours of community service and four years probation.”
And a $10,000 fine. And it was a deferred adjudication. Irvin was eventually found “not guilty” of the charge. District Judge Hon. Manny Alvarez, the judge with jurisdiction over Irvin’s deferred adjudication, investigated the incident and found it to be accidental. As did the NFL… and the NFL had a very public hardon for Irvin, as evidenced by the five game suspension he was given in connection with the motel room incident, as opposed to the normal four games. Tagliabue threw in the extra game because Irvin was a “high profile” player.
I’m not so sure about the “accidental” part, myself.
That said, McIver escalated the confrontation and he should have expected retaliation. Not exactly the smartest thing to do but not an unexpected thing for an NFL offensive lineman to do. Unfortunately for him, Irvin grabbed some scissors and McIver tried to take them away.
There was word of a six-figure payoff, but I don’t buy that. If McIver wanted money, he could have gotten plenty more by suing Irvin and the Cowboys. Especially after he was “cut” a second time… by the team… before the 2000 season.
Also, MSU officials stated that the wound was tended to by the school nurse on duty, not the Cowboys’ medical staff. Doesn’t seem as dramatic as Pearlman makes it sound. But whatever. Maybe I should write a book on the Cowboys, too!
Hey, maybe I should write a book about the Cowboys, too.

I remember after a Super Bowl win, some guys dumped a cooler full of Gatorade on Johnson’s head, but it appeared to bead up and roll right off like water on a freshly waxed car hood, so Emmitt went up to him and messed Jimmuh’s famous hair up manually.

You guys can attack Pearlman all you want but I have laughed my ass off through the half of the book I’ve read. It’s done the one thing no Cowboy’s fan here can do and that is make me almost like those teams. I obviously don’t condone any of it, but it’s fun to read a live action version of Semi-Tough.

If Cowboy medical staff was in the room, as the story states, this was a team-approved activity.
If you or I had done this, we would have been sentenced to a prison term.
It is time some reporter challenged the NFL and the Cowboys and get them to explain why the NFL allows the Cowboys to sign people like Pacman Jones and allow him to play while Michael Vick goes to jail.
The NFL doesn’t have a cozy relationship with the Atlanta Falcons. It does have a cozy relationship with the Dallas Cowboys.
One NFL member tries to kill a fellow player and he continues to play. Another kills dogs and is sentenced to prison.
We all know this: Jerry Jones runs the NFL. His players can try to kill other people and still play. It is time some reporter does due dilligence and explains why Jerry Jones’ players can do anything they want.

Holy jeez, here we go.
“If Cowboy medical staff was in the room, as the story states, this was a team-approved activity.”
Yeah. Teams generally are ok with players getting haircuts. However… if you’d actually read the article… it implies that the medical staff wasn’t in the room. “Cowboys’ medical staffers stormed the room”
Reading is fundamental.
“If you or I had done this, we would have been sentenced to a prison term.”
No you wouldn’t have. No complainant. Look that word up if you need to.
“It is time some reporter challenged the NFL and the Cowboys and get them to explain why the NFL allows the Cowboys to sign people like Pacman Jones and allow him to play while Michael Vick goes to jail.”
Michael Vick is in jail because he was involved in gambling across state lines. And Pearlman’s not a reporter. He’s a writer that write “bad boys” books about sports. And he’s not trying to get anybody to explain anything. He’s trying to make some money.
“The NFL doesn’t have a cozy relationship with the Atlanta Falcons. It does have a cozy relationship with the Dallas Cowboys.”
Well that would figure, since Atlanta ownership has been pretty pathetic since the team was created.
“One NFL member tries to kill a fellow player and he continues to play.”
Are you talking about Albert Haynesworth? Did you know that Rams DE Leonard Little legit DID kill somebody?
“Another kills dogs and is sentenced to prison.”
Don’t forget the interstate gambling thing.
“We all know this: Jerry Jones runs the NFL. His players can try to kill other people and still play. It is time some reporter does due dilligence and explains why Jerry Jones’ players can do anything they want.”
What are you waiting for? You’re obviously an “on the ball” guy, why don’t you take up your own cause?
