Every Vikings fan can now exhale. Defensive end Jared Allen is no longer one crazy Friday night away from a one-year suspension.
Per the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Allen is out of the league’s substance abuse program. Moving forward, a positive test will not subject him to a suspension.
“I don’t have to tell them where I travel to anymore,” Allen said. “I’m back to being a normal citizen in the NFL.”
Allen doesn’t have to keep the league informed as to his whereabouts because “membership” in the program requires players to be available at a moment’s notice for an unannounced test.
Though it makes Allen’s day-to-day life easier, the absence of the constant threat of a drug and alcohol test means that the temptation to get reacquainted will the Reverend Al K. Hall could return. And so it’s now more important that ever, in our view, for Allen to remain dedicated to avoiding the liquid poison that nearly derailed his NFL career.

Vikings Haiku:
It’s ongoing work -
Forgetting the pleasure and
Remembering pain.
Jared continues
To beat the drinking problem.
Congratulations!

what is up with all the haikus?
I’m not a huge fan of Jared’s off-field endeavors (wine em’ dine em’ and 69 em’? classy jared, real classy) but I hope he can stay clean. He’s got a lot of talent.

He stayed clean just long enough to sign the fat contract with the Vikings without having to worry about the financial implications that getting caught drinking will cause. My guess is he will get busted again now that he doesn’t have people looking over his shoulder. Sad…but true.

Good luck to him. Of course, having a nitwit like Childress for a head coach would drive anyone to drink so this will be a true test of his desire to stay sober.

There’s really nothing to “exhale” about. Peter King pointed this out months ago: being out of the substance abuse program isn’t going to save Allen from the personal conduct policy if he has another incident. And considering that Goodell cut his 4 game suspension down to 2 games last year, another slip-up might bring an even harsher penalty since the league initially took it easy on him.
Being under the policy was actually better for him, because just the act of drinking would get him in trouble. Now he can drink again.

So, Jared once hit the sauce.
Sobriety was at a loss.
He’s brought himself back,
And with every sack,
He’ll prove that he is the boss.

Lurtsema, you compose haiku and limericks well. What other
forms of poetry / prose, if any, do you think would be
appropriate for this site?
