Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey had a big game yesterday in Denver, catching eight passes for 75 yards. But it will be a few weeks before the Saints have his services again.
Mike Triplett of the Times-Picayune reports that Shockey will have sports hernia surgery this week and will be out three to six weeks.
Per Triplett, the surgery will repair an injury that has been bothering Shockey for weeks and was aggravated during Sunday’s loss to the Broncos.
Behind Shockey on the Saints’ depth chart is Billy Miller, who has two catches this season, and Mark Campbell, who missed the Denver game with a hamstring injury.

That’s gonna be more on the 6 week side of 3-6 weeks. That’s tough to come back from in the same season.

If my experience with Dirk Johnson, McNabb and Curtis as an Eagles fan has taught me anything, it’s that there’s no chance Shockey will be back in 3 weeks. Expect the later end of the injury for sure.

One more excuse for the media to use as the Saints settle back into their usual role of being the most mediocre (overhyped) team in the NFL.

The Saints usual role is not being overhyped. I’ve been a Saints fan for long time, and I’m still surprised to hear about them at all/see merchandise in stores.

NY got the better of that trade. Doesn’t it seem like once a guy gets injured, the injuries keep coming?

Certainly the worst tackling team in the entire League…but I wonder if this injury will even matter in the long run. As long as the curse of John Carney hangs over this team, we are forever doomed.

Shockey hasn’t really been healthy since he’s gotten here (to N.O.).
Here’s to hoping he is out closer to 3 weeks than 6 and comes back as the Shockey we were hoping for when we traded for him.
By that time, we should also have Colston back. Good thing we have a relatively week schedule until then.

The only SHOCK I would have had would have been if he played in 16 games this season… whew, I thought I was going to have to reform my expectations from this kid!
I’m so glad the Giants got a high draft pick for him!

I played football in high school with Billy Miller. Good guy. And He will do a more than admirable job of filling in for Shockey. He’s got great hands, and has made some big catches for New Orleans the last few years. Not as explosive as Shockey, or a great blocker…but he can do the job.
The Saints upcoming schedule isn’t too bad, and if Bush plays like he did yesterday, New Orleans can hopefully hang around until they get healthy.

As Kevin Boss caught that go-head TD yesterday afternoon, I couldn’t help think that Shockey would have bobbled and drop the pass.

Don’t worry man… Shockey is a bit of a luxury for you guys, and you should be fine without him for a little while, as long as Colston is healthy.
Billy Miller is a lot better player than people give him credit for, and Mark Campbell is ten times the blocker Shockey is. There shouldn’t be a huge drop-off.
But as a Giants fan, I hate to say “told ya so.” Shockey’s legs used to separate him from the average tight ends; he used to be explosive off the line and capable of stopping and turning on a dime… but now, after the injuries, he’s just another guy with decent hands and below-average skills as a blocker.
