Titans coach Jeff Fisher says that he wants to give quarterback Vince Young the chance to learn the NFL game that Young never got during his rookie year.
And, to make that happen, Fisher is considering having Young watch the game from the coaches’ box, not from the sideline.
Really? That’s the reason? Helping him learn the game? No young quarterback, to our knowledge, has ever watched the game from the coaches’ box in order to learn the ropes. The best place for a young quarterback to get ready is on the sidelines, where the interactions between the starter and his teammates, and between the starter and the coaches, can be observed.
We think that, in this case, moving Young off the sidelines would be aimed at protecting Young from any of the yay-hoos who might try to harass him from the stands.
The Titans face the Texans at home on Sunday, and it was the Titans’ home crowd whose boos of Young sparked a chain of events that ended with a Monday night APB – and a police negotiator on standby. Surely, Fisher doesn’t want to expose Young to anyone in the seats near the team bench who might be inclined to try to press the softened buttons of a player who might be perceived as a rich, whiny quitter.
Indeed, Fisher said on Wednesday during The Dan Patrick Show that Kerry Collins would be the starter even if Vince Young were healthy. But Fisher also claimed that Young didn’t decline to re-enter the Week One game against throwing an interception, and that Young didn’t ask out of the team’s playoff loss in January.

Could all his difficulties also have something to do with that Wonderlic score? I mean maybe he got by on fantastic athletic ability in college but in the pros has to “learn the game”?
So now combine dumb as a post with emotional issues? YEOW!
Donno …….. but he could be holdin’ a clipboard next to Akili Smith in Canada soon …………… bright side of that might be the health care.

I’m sure you are aware that many offensive coordinators watch the game from the booth. That’s not because they are afraid of being booed. It makes it much easier to spot defenses, and see how plays develop. They can see every player on the field much better and see how the defensive reacts.
It will provide Vince more of a “textbook” lesson on offense. Sure, when he’s on the field as a player his view is different, but it’s still critical to understand what’s happening with the defense and why.

That might actually be a good idea. Several OC watch from the press box because of the birds eye view and the distractions are kept to a minimum. But it isn’t a good team building solution.

What do you base this on, dear Florio? well we all know you’ve been a NFL HC for many years, but still what do you base this on??
And maybe he could learn something with a birds perspective, the talks on the sideline, well we should all assume he has done that in the previous years.. so he clearly needs to see the game for the air.. to get better..

If Fischer just wanted him to see the game from a different prospective, all VY would have to do is go to the film room. They have the high endzone cameras from both endzones from every game. I think Florio is on to something.

Why can’t he learn the game from the box AND be protected from the crowd. And what’s wrong with being protected? The guy is obviously fragile and he’s a multi-million dollar investment with exceptional talent. I don’t see what’s wrong with this plan.

Jeff Fisher continues to impress me. Not only is his team 2 - 0 without an offense, he’s still trying to cover for VY every step of the way. Good coach, good human being… I like Jeff Fisher.

bwnyc has a good point. the titans dropped a lot of coin on VY, they basically gave him the keys to the franchise. the last thing im sure they want to see happen is to have VY completely lose it. if they can somehow get him to pull his head out of his ass, then there still might be hope. im not holding my breath though.

The guy obviously cannot take it, and the Titans should not cut him any slack. Keep the pressure on and he’ll quit, at which point the Titans can reclaim some of the guaranteed money already paid him.

i totally agree with the comments about fisher…a class act all the way
if young has emotional issues right now & is having trouble grasping the offensive comcepts it might be a great idea to put him in the coach’s booth…i have heard that for a pro quarterback it takes about 30-32 games to adjust to the speed of the game…i would not give up on this guy too soon…
does heimerdinger call the plays from the booth or the sideline?
i have wondered if some of this mess isnt related to the new OC..he apparently is pretty demanding & may forget mama young’s plea to show her baby boy some love from time to time..could end up being a good reality check

VY is never going to win back this locker room. There no is saving him or grooming him anymore. This is the friggin’ NFL. I predict this move will blow up in Fisher’s face.
I am not unsympathetic to VY. He needs to be on meds. But the other 52 Titans are primed to play NOW!

I will speak for Florio by saying, He based that from actually watching NFL football games. If you watch you will always see the back up QB holding the clipboard wearing a headset and communicating with the OC and QB (Interacting with his team.). They are very much part of the game. My guess to why Fischer doesn’t want VY doing this…Wonderlic score= 06.00
