As explained as part of our Week Two Ten-Pack for SportingNews.com, the Minnesota Vikings have looked spotty at best on offense. Despite having one of the best young runners the league has ever seen, the passing game is at times abandoned. When it’s not abandoned, it looks like it should be.
So what should the Vikings do? Well, with Jeff Garcia available, the Vikes should offer a low-round pick and move forward.
Any reluctance to do so might be a result of the internal tug-o-war that surely is playing out among and between Rick Spielman, Brad Childress, and Rob Brzezinski. Tarvaris Jackson was a second-round pick of the so-called “Clusterfudge Triangle of Authority,” which consisted of Childress, Brzezinski, and Fran Foley.
The Vikings actually traded up to get Jackson. And Jackson has been, to date, a failure. He was booed heavily, and deservedly, on Sunday, as his erratic play caused a 15-0 lead to evaporate in the second half.
But Childress surely doesn’t want to admit that he failed with Jackson, and ditching Tarvaris for Garcia would constitute such an admission. So, instead, Childress and company will likely trudge ahead, hoping that Jackson figures things out before the team is mathematically eliminated from contention in 2008.
The franchise deserves better, the fans deserve better, and Adrian Peterson — who is busting his ass to grind out the yards on the turf that Jackson isn’t able to gain through the air — deserves better as well.
In our view, Childress would be wise to not worry about whether he’ll look foolish for drafting Jackson by benching him. NFL teams make plenty of mistakes; the teams who are willing to acknowledge their errors and move on are the ones who are smart enough to avoid compounding them.

Hey Childress…can you say Alex Smith, Rick Mirer, Ryan Leaf, etc. You goofed, don’t compound it by being stupid too.

This is so obvious it hurts. And knowing the Vikings they won’t go through with a trade. Which I can’t imagine why another than ego. Sigh.
Viking fans are feeling as bad as Vince Young felt last week.

Although Jackson’s erratic play had a lot to do with it, the loss to the Colts yesterday had more to do with the offensive playcalling on the part of the Vikings. It might be that they were limited since their receivers often drop catchable balls or maybe Jackson is just that bad, but ultimately the gameplan was run on first down with AP, roll out Jackson for an incompletion on 2nd down or run AP again and try to get something done on 3rd down with Taylor, repeat. With such a predictable offensive gameplan eventually that Colts defense was bound to catch up.

Bucs contacted 49ers recently, but they weren’t interested:
http://49ers.pressdemocrat.com/default.asp?item=2262210&mode=
–In talking to some people this morning . . . the 49ers would have had interest in Tampa Bay QB Jeff Garcia if he’d become available early in training camp. But the club is not in the running to work a trade with the Bucs at this point. Fox reported that the Bucs called the 49ers about a possible trade. They just signed a 38-year-old QB (Jamie Martin), and to acquire Garcia now would be undermining J.T. O’Sullivan, who won the starting job this summer. O.C. Mike Martz is quite fond of O’Sullivan, and to bring in a former Pro Bowl quarterback would not be creating a good situation for the first-time starter. One line of thinking is that the Bucs are using the 49ers to create a little buzz, perhaps hoping to entice the Patriots to make a deal for Garcia.

Childress won’t admit his mistake. At least many of us are hoping this will lead to a new head coach for next year.

Childress has to much of an ego to bench T Jack. After all, it’s Childress that “made” McNabb who he is remember? When Childress called all the plays for those great Eagles teams? Oh wait. His own head coach wouldnt let him call plays. Once he was gone, then the play calling went to the new OC. This guy is a clown. He is going down with the ship, and T Jack is the anchor. It’s not even T JAck’s fault. He didnt ask to be the starter, and he sure as hell didnt earn a starting spot. It was handed to him by Childress.
ON a side note, it would be nice to see someone else throwing passes for Shankow to drop.

Unfortunately, it’s not all Tarvaris.
Childress’ playcalling yesterday was far more atrocious than normal. He is too conservative and plays not to lose rather than to win. That is the big reason they lost yesterday and will snatch defeat from the jaws of victory again in the future.
I wouldn’t mind Garcia, but unless Childress replaces himself with Jon Gruden as well…all us Vike fans will still be suffering.

Jackson is getting too much blame. Fact of the matter is the Vikings showed no killer edge or creativity in trying to beat the Colts. Jackson wasn’t very good, but they only gave him one play to run over and over again. Unless they replace the OC, I don’t know if replacing the QB will do a heck of a lot.

Childress doesn’t call the plays… Bevell does. This has been shown time and time again. If you want to blame the play calling that’s fine, but blame the appropriate person.
TJ did exactly what the Vikes and most fans asked of him, don’t throw INTs. He completed 58% of his passes and averaged over 10 yards a completion with no INTs. That’s what we look for in a game manager.
Our WRs are just not helping him out. In 2 games we have not seen 1 single difficult catch made. Our WRs can not get off the line against pressing DBs, they can not get separation on either slant routes or deep routes, and they are not fighting and winning any battles for the ball. Could TJ be better? Sure, but man could the wideouts help the case a little if they’d beat 1 on 1 coverage from time to time.
Go get Garcia, he’s not going to help the wideouts get open.

as a Packers fan I would just like to say:

the vikes would’ve had a shot with a average qb and a coach who knew what he was doing. Maybe Childress could’ve had the GB job, but the best thing to happen to the Packers is not getting him.

In your 10 pack you said that the Pats were trying to sell everyone that it will be the same high flying offense as last year. Did your alter-ego Hacky McHackamahack right that? Belichick said Cassel has to do his job, just like everyone else on that team. I’ve watched pretty much all of the media on the Pats website and I didn’t see Belichick once say there were going to keep up last years 38 point a game average. They want to win football games. Infact one of the strengths of this team is that BB doesn’t ask people to do things they can’t and plays to their strengths. Eventually Cassel will be putting up some big numbers in this offense, but he has to gain some confidence running it first. This game was a big step for that. Quick good decisions + Quick release = the rest of the league will pay for the checks the media is is writing.

Curious play-calling, and Shiancoe doing his best Troy Williamson impression were as much to blame for the loss to the Colts as Jackson’s play. Jackson played better than he did against Green Bay, but his receivers have to play better too. Berrian was a nonfactor and Rice was hampered by a knee injury. 0-2 is not encouraging, but it is still early. Dennis Green’s Vikings teams would win big in the preseason, start the season fast, fade badly in the middle of the season, struggle to make the playoffs, and, with no momentum, lose the first playoff game. As the Giants demonstrated last year, the time to get hot is at the end of the season.
Favre, Simms, Garcia, Culpepper–are there any other names you can throw around?

The Vikings are better off WITHOUT Garcia. They still have Gus Frerotte as 2nd string. He’s still impressive at times, more impressive than Garcia would be coming into the mix for this season. The play calling yesterday WAS horrible. Why expect Tarvaris Jackson to give to Adrian Peterson 1st and 2nd down and then have him pass on 3rd downs? Why not try down field on a few or more 1st downs? Granted A.P. did do his part to get the first downs, but he took a big toll that day. He was worn out due in part that every set of downs had 2 run plays each.
And for Adam Vinateri, I really didn’t like to watch him win the game for Indy. My wife is a 3rd cousin of his and I am, of course, a Minn. fan. And we live in his home town. Sad…

Jackson has had some errant passes. He also has been let down by his receivers (his 3rd down pass to Shaincoe in the end zone was similar to Aaron Rogers 3rd down pass to to Korey Hall in the season opener; the difference is Hall made the catch for Rogers on TD pass of the game and Shiancoe didn’t. If Shiancoe, who has dropped four TD passes in just over one season, doesn’t drop the ball, the Vikings win and Tavaris would be credited as being efficient and relatively mistake free).
So the problem isn’t Tavaris Jackson, and the solution isn’t just inserting a new QB.
The problem is predictable play calling, putting Jackson in situations where he is only passing when defenses expect it and are in nickel and dime packages. Look at what Jackson has done at the beginning of the second half in both games. When he’s allowed to pass on 1st and 2nd down, receivers get open and he finds the open man and gets into a rhythm. But running Peterson and Chester Taylor up the middle on 1st and 2nd down (and sometimes 3rd down), and only passing on 3rd down is setting any QB up for failure.
I will go out on a limb with one prediction. Despite what Vikings fan want to think, Brad Childress is a very smart man — he’s stubborn and arrogant, but smart. This week’s game against the Panthers will be much different. Instead of handcuffing Tavaris in hopes he won’t make major mistakes to lose the game, they will have Jackson come out throwing from the start, even at the expense of not giving Peterson 15 first half carries.
My guess is the first 10 plays will consist of 8 or 9 different type of pass plays (screens, roll outs, bootlegs, deep passes, crossing patterns, play action fakes, etc.). This will be Jackson’s “prove it” game. If he fails and either throws multiple interceptions and just misses on passes and fails to get the Vikings into the end zone, he will be pulled in favor of Gus Ferrotte. If that happens the job will be Ferotte’s as long as he’s healthy and it will be interesting to see if Jackson holds off John David Booty for the No. 2 job.

What makes anyone think that the Bucs are willing to trade Garcia to the Vikings? If Garcia were traded to the Vikings and the Vikings had a good run in the playoffs, Gruden would not be looking very good. As it is, I am surprised Gruden still has a job.

The playcalling is restricted due to T-Jack’s ability. This coaching staff knows what they have in T-Jack and it is becoming apparent that they don’t trust him to make many throws. Every throw is a quick slant or a drag route, his deep throws hang in the air way too long and are not accurate. I’m not saying T-Jack can never be a good NFL quarterback but his experience level coming into the NFL was way far behind most drafted QB’s and he is just not ready. People can argue you learn more playing but I don’t think that’s the case with T-Jack; he needs to sit back and just observe the games on the bench and analyze film with the coaches during the week for a while to develop an understanding of really what’s happening. Like many, I don’t think Garcia is the long term answer but this team is way too talented at many positions with a legitimate chance to be something special for us not to do something now. So the playcalling may be questionable, but I am a firm believer that the playcalling would be much more different with a guy who can make a 20+ yard throw.

I was at the game yesterday and I haven’t watched the tape yet, so forgive me if I’m repeating something. For me the key play was the incomplete TD pass to Shiancoe. NOT because he dropped it, but because T-Jack threw it to him!!! Vikes faced a 3rd and short and STILL had a chance for the 1st down. TJack had the fullback (forget his name) wide open underneath and he had the 1st down, there can be some debate as to if he would have gotten into the endzone or not, but he had a chance. But, as you know, he went to Shiancoe. Which, in all fairness, should be a routine play and it is for the Patriots, Colts, Cowboys . . That play solidified my feelings on Jackson, he should have checked down, got the first and lived to fight again.
