The disclosure on Monday that Chris Simms and Tim Rattay were brought to New England and then asked to leave is, to say the least, unusual. And we see only two explanations for it.
First, the Patriots abruptly decided to move ahead with unproven Matt Cassel and rookie Kevin O’Connell as the only two quarterbacks. Second, the Pats came up with another plan.
Under either scenario, the decision to not even kick the tires of Simms and Rattay makes no sense. Why not see what they have, in the event they can help the team over the balance of the year?
Chris Mortensen suggested on Monday night that receiver Randy Moss might be lobbying for the team to pursue recently-retired Daunte Culpepper, who hasn’t responded to our Sunday e-mail regarding whether he’d pull a Favre if the Pats call.
The other possibility is that the Pats are planning to swing a deal for someone currently on another team’s depth chart. The problem, however, is that any team with a solid backup likely won’t be inclined to trade him, because said team might need him as soon as this Sunday.
Moreover, how many backup quarterbacks out there are any better than Matt Cassel? Patrick Ramsey? Shaun Hill? Kellen Clemens? Ryan Fitzpatrick? Charlie Frye?
So our guess is that the Patriots have decided that, for now, they’re going to go with what they have, and hope for the best.
By the way, the rest of the team isn’t too bad.

Makes sense for the hoodie to give his backup a vote of confidence for at least one game.

It is interesting that they are not at the very least looking for another back-up. A name I have not seen mentioned anywhere is Jake Plummer.

I hope Vince Wilfork takes the dirtiest cheap shot he can at Brett Favre and snaps his leg in half.
I have no more compassion or sympathy for the Jests (or any other fan base) after seeing some of the disgusting posts on here in the last several days.
All I have to say Jests fans: You better hope NE doesn’t find a way to win Sunday. If the Pats pull this one off, we’ll be 2-0 with Miami coming to Gillette in Week 3 and you guys will be 0-2 going cross country to play SD.

I think they are bringing back Matt Gutierrez who I didn’t think should have been cut. He knows the system & it makes sense if they are really going to give Cassel a shot. Watch for the third round pick Kevin O’Connell to emerge before the end of the season, maybe sooner.Get well TB. In Bill We Trust.

I wonder if it is a confidence thing for Cassel. By not brining in a veteran, Belichick tell him that he’s the quarterback for the year. That might help if he struggles, not constantly looking over his shoulder to see when he’s going to get yanked. If I remember correctly, Brady didn’t have to worry about that until late in 2001, once he got over his early struggles.
I think Pats fans are hoping that either the kid delivers and they scrape their way into the postseason or they get Brady back next year along with another high draft pick.

I personally think the Patriots should trade for Damon Huard. It would be pointless for Kansas City to start Huard for a few weeks when they are trying to rebuild anyway. Huard played in New England before and he could be the ideal veteran backup that could come in and play if Cassell struggles.

Casanova,
regardless of some of the posts (which I agree, haven’t been too great), show a litte more maturity…how you could wish on anyone that “someone takes the dirtiest cheap shot he can at Brett Favre and snaps his leg in half” is just disturbing. Maybe someone ought to snap your leg in half and just leave you on the side of the road.

Mort needs to give up the Culpepper crap. Culpepper is way too stupid to handle the Patriots’ complex offense. The Pats’ offenses has as much or more presnap reads and adjustments than any team in the NFL. Culpepper even when he was good always had troubles reading defenses.
Why would the Patriots bring in a guy who’s biggest weaknesses plays against the entire offensive philosophy? That would be like a team signing Peyton Manning and instead of asking him to stand in the pocket and make quick decisions, ask him to run around in the backfield like Michael Vick used to draw defenses away from coverage. Where is the logic in that?
Culpepper may or may not be the best QB on the open market, but he is clearly not the best option available to the Patriots. Whatever Cassel turns out to be, he is a better option for the Pats because he seems to read defenses fairly well. Some QBs just don’t fit certain systems and Culpepper in his prime wouldn’t fit the Pats’ system and it is too late in the game to change to a system that would fit Culpepper.

Excellent point. And that may be exactly what the Pats are doing. Face it, if it’s not going to be Cassel then it’s got to be a seasoned veteran QB.

Why would the Chiefs trade Huard? They’re down to two QBs now, and they’d have to find another veteran to bring in and teach the system. They’re not letting him go.
And Feeleys just a rumor too.

I just realized that I f’d up the Jets record so for that I’ll take my hits… So fire away…
But my general point was that if NE can pull off the win they’ll be a game ahead of the Jests w/ Miami coming to town which is a better situation than taking on the Chargers on the road and already behind in the standings.
For this season, the expectations have been lowered considerably… A succesful season for me this year is a playoff berth.

There. You just brought yourself down to the same level. Anyone who wishes an injury on a player has lowered himself to that of the Eagle fans who cheered loud and proud as Michael Irvin laid motionless, no feeling in his legs, and his career over. The most pathetic fans in all of sports and you just joined them.

As a Patriots fan I hope they stick with Cassel. If you are going to push the team concept then when someone goes down you have to give the current back up on the team a chance to step up. I am most interested in seeing how Cassel can play when given an actual game plan and time to get comfortable in the role (from what I’ve read / seen the Patriots do not game plan or do a minimal amount in the pre-season… aka they stick with base offense/defense schemes).
Otherwise, I hope they do not even think of bringing Culpepper in. He is damaged goods and he should stay retired. I never thought he was all that good in Minnesota and I think he has declined since that time. Plummer would be interesting but I think he is also done. Out of football too long and just not interested anymore. As for the other names the only one I kind of like is Simms and that would only be as insurance for Cassel.
In the end bring back Guterez (sp?) and stick with what you got. Now if I could only find a new QB in some of my fantasy leagues (dang auto drafts leaving me with one starting QB and then Sage Rosenfels!?!).

I find it odd that yesterday, when being interviewed on WEEI’s Big Show, that Bill Belichick went out of his way to say that Tom Brady had “not been placed on IR by the team.” Maybe I am making a big deal about it - especially since NFL.com, under team transactions, says that the Patriots placed him on IR, but all of these things seem to be making me wonder a bit. . .
Of course, Belichick could have just been wanting to maintain accuracy - since maybe they hadn’t officially placed him on IR at the time of the interview.

I think they’ll stick with Cassel for the meantime, but at the first sign of trouble, they’ll bring in a vetern. This is the reason I can’t see them signing back Guiterez. He simply doesn’t have the kind of experience they would need. I really like the idea of floating Plummer’s name out there. That’s really interesting. Damon Huard is simply NOT a possibility, while I believe, he was the best QB in the beginning of the season on the Chiefs roster, I also believe he’s the only decent QB they have left. They’re not going to trade him. The idea that the Dolphins would be willing to trade Beck to a division rival is also silly.
As for the person who suggested that Wilfork take a cheap shot at Favre, that’s disgusting. Listen I hate the Jets as much as the next Pats fan, but You’re no better, in my book, than the people who celebrated Brady’s injury. I’d rather the Patriots beat the Jets with Favre then without Favre. If they can’t, then they can’t, but at least then you know that the best TEAM won.
