Said Falcons coach Mike Smith of his team beating up the Lions in the first quarter, “We wanted a fast start, and I thought we did that.”
In his first game as a starter, Falcons RB Michael Turner broke the franchise record for rushing yards in a game, with 220.
Said Lions DT Cory Redding, “We’re good, we just didn’t show up today.”
Lions QB Jon Kitna had heated words with some coaches on the sideline, but everyone downplayed the incident after the game.
Said Lions coach Rod Marinelli of the problems on defense, “It’s tackling — it comes down to that. I think anybody could see that. That’s something we emphasize and emphasize, and we didn’t do it.”
The Lions’ performance is described as “a stinging indictment” of Marinelli and defensive coordinator Joe Barry.
Falcons QB Matt Ryan completed 9 of 13 passes for 161 yards, with a touchdown and no interceptions.
Falcons fans are hyperventilating over Ryan’s performance.
By notching one win, the Falcons have already met some experts’ preseason expectations.
Said Falcons S Lawyer Milloy, “It was a great win for our team. I know that there are not a lot of people that have high expectations for our team, but we have expectations for ourselves and I thought that we showed that effort.”

Putrid. Disgusting. The defense looked like a high school team out there. Same ol’ same ol’.
It did, however, give me a prime opportunity to teach my 3 1/2 year old daughter to say “Fire Millen”. She learns quick. I’m so proud of her.

I’ve NEVER seen a team come out and play as flat as the Lions did yesterday–at the beginning of BOTH halves.
It’s the coaching staff’s job to get the team ready to play. They failed miserably.
As a Lions fan, I beg everyone to NOT buy tickets or support this team with another dime until the owner makes changes to the front office. The only thing to get Ford’s attention will be empty seats.

… and Barry Sanders smiles, knowing full-well he made the right decision.
Millen needs to go back to whatever the hell it was he did before running the Lions into the ground full-time, if he was a player or coach he would’ve been gone years ago.

In all honesty, the kid did okay. Who wouldn’t want to start their career off the way he did? He’ll struggle this season, but looked ok.
On the other hand….How does Matt Millen have a job? My god.

I”m a Falcons fan so of course this is biased, but how does the ass-beating the Lions just took fall back to Matt Millen? Yeah he drafted some crappy players, but he did at least nab Calvin Johnson for you.
Nonetheless, Millen had no effect on yesterday’s game. Blame the coaches or the players, not the guy who writes the contracts and sits in a booth. He didn’t call the plays or “motivate” the players.
I know Millen is crap, but I also know he didn’t lose the game yesterday.

The Dox–Who compiled the coaching staff and players?
Millen. He’s the one who hired Morninwheg. He’s the one who managed to follow up Morninwheg with an even worse hire of Mariucci. You’re right–the players were horrendous yesterday and the coaches did a terrible job of getting them ready to play. The blame, though, falls on Millen. Millen is the one that compiled this entire team.

To pull out a win over a team who has a “decent” QB and 2 outstanding receivers that were a combined 11 inches taller than Chris Houston and Brent Grimes combined is nothing short of pretty damn good! Not to mention Michael Turner and Matt Ryan’s FIRST ever NFL start. The Falcons were arguably the WORST team in the league last year. Please don’t ruin our moment in the sun…Go Hotlanta!

One of my buddies picked up the Lions D for fantasy “because the Falcons suck on offense.”
Doh! I guess he forgot the Lions kind of suck on defense.

Millen will probably last the season - the personnel moves have been made, they’re pretty much stuck with the team they have. I’d say Marinelli gets a pass next week against the Packers - as long as they at least compete - but he’s probably out following the 49er’s game if the Lions don’t win. It’s inexcusable to lose to the Falcons (no offense, Atlanta fans): rookie QB, rookie coach, former backup RB learning a new system. If they can’t pick up the win over San Francisco, they need to get a new coach in before the bye week so they can at least have a chance to build something this year.
