Though a partially torn MCL reportedly will keep Titans quarterback Vince Young off the field for the next two-to-four weeks, an incident that occurred not long before the injury could be the thing that truncates his career in Tennessee.
According to David Climer of the Tennesseean, Young apparently attempted to take himself out of the game after throwing an interception in the fourth quarter. Young supposedly tried to blame his reluctance to return on a tightening hamstring, even though he sought no treatment for it while the defense was on the field.
“I came on the field and 10 wasn’t in the huddle,” center Kevin Mawae said of the incident. “I didn’t know what the situation was.”
Per Climer, Young returned only after prodding from an animated Jeff Fisher. “From the outside looking in,” Climer writes, ”Fisher seemed to all but throw Young back onto the field.”
Though Young was named the offensive rookie of the year in 2006, his regression last season has caused us to conclude that the jury is still out on whether he’s a bust. Based on today’s events, it’s looking more likely than ever that Young will never fulfill his potential.
And, hopefully once and for all, Young’s career will get NFL teams to quit building up and/or tearing down college players based on their performances in a bowl game.

I think Vince Young’s talent is valuable and I’m not down on his game as much as many, but if I’m the Titans, I’m trying to move beyond him as fast as I can.
You simply CANNOT win a Super Bowl with a QB who isn’t interested.

if its true and he didnt want to play he’s lost his teammate’s respect. you might as well find a taker for Jello-Man. He’s prolly done in TENN.
And they said it was Chow’s fault he hadnt progressed…

I’m a Longhorn fan and I knew Young wouldn’t be a great NFL QB. I was happy when the Texans used their heads and passed up on him. So many Texan fans that are also Longhorn fans called the Texans stupid for not drafting him….Well who is stupid now.

Who cares!? Vince Young is a BUST….he would have been drafted as a third round WR if it weren’t for his performance in the Rose Bowl against USC a few years back in which he was more of a RB than a QB. He’s simply not an NFL QB

How can anyone say that his career is done? If anything, most of the problems he’s had in the passing game are on the recievers he’s had or lack thereof. None of the guys they have on their roster as WR’s could be the #3 guy on just about any team in the league. They don’t get separation, they don’t make catches, and they don’t make plays. I don’t blame him for being frustrated when you make a perfect throw deep down the field only to see it hit his reciever in both hands and is dropped. The Titans’ front office and management have failed Vince Young, not the other way around.

The camera repeatedly showed Young on the sideline pouting after he was picked too. He had his head in his hands, and Heimerdinger was reaming him out. Which is just what he needs, since Chow never did.

Vince is not showing improvement in skill,
he’s not very interested in trying,
and he’s hurt on top of that..?
Kerry Collins has gotta be lookin’ better and better.
Chris Simms might be lookin’ good.
Maybe even Culpepper, but he’s temperamental too……

ngnichols - you’re saying it’s the Front Office’s fault for having VY throw the ball into a Defensive Lineman’s chest? Or a ball that is about 8 yards away to his RB’s feet?
Regardless, if the QB can’t throw a ball accurately to a spot on the field it doesn’t matter if the WR can get separation or not because he won’t be able to make the throw.

look the guy is a bust. plain and simple. he cant throw an accurate pass for one, someone said its because of his receivers!? HAHA. the receivers have to get the ball thrown to them first! he is a run first, throw second QB. just like Michael Vick was. look how he turned out. BUST. there is only one excellent QB to come out of that class, and thats Jay Cutler. Leinart and Young are both busts! both were system QB’s. Young might as well retire or learn a different position. he is big, maybe he can play TE. Fisher made a bad pick with Young. complete waste.

I would rather have the Packers situation with a still unproven QB than to put up with a headcase quitter like Young sure seems to be. I wonder if people piss and moan that the Titans are racist if they stick with Kerry Collins once Young is healthy? Anyone with a brain would realize Collins probably would give them the best chance to win each week.

Reminds me of when Eddie George took himself out of the game against Baltimore in 2000. Ray Lewis hit him, and Eddie wouldn’t go back in the game. The Titans still won that game…but Baltimore ended up getting even later (by winning a playoff game in Tennessee that year en route to winning the Super Bowl).

florio, you mean the media needs to quit building them up/tearing them down. it’s all the media’s fault as far as that. to put that on nfl team’s is purely lame. i think you’re implying something about the rookie wage scale for the first 10 pics, but either way your comment was dumb

ngnichols: turns out donovan mcnabb has had a pretty successful career with receivers that are exactly the same as the ones you described as vince young having. turns out tom brady has had a pretty good run even before moss got there. turns out matt hasselbeck has done the same thing w/ sub par receivers as well. most qb’s make their wr’s…not the other way around.

Isn’t Young the one who said he considered retiring after his rookie year?
“The camera repeatedly showed Young on the sideline pouting after he was picked too. He had his head in his hands”
Hah! That sounds very reminiscent of another “great athlete” QB who couldn’t throw the ball worth a damn. Man was Kordell entertaining when he cried.
