So when we declared on Thursday night that we’d get the Preseason Power Rankings finished before the games start on Sunday, we promptly procrastinated.
Thus, we now have to get eight of them done in about 27 hours.
At No. 8, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Tempted as we are to just end it there and move on to No. 7, we probably should say some more.
Last season, the Bucs were widely overlooked, and quietly put together a solid year. The NFC South winners gave the Super Bowl champs a pretty good game in the playoffs, losing ultimately by ten points.
The defense still has teeth, and rookie cornerback Aqib Talib adds a sense of freshness to this mix of old and young players like Derrick Brooks and Cato June and Ronde Barber and Barrett Ruud and Gaines Adams.
On offense, Jeff Garcia is one of the more underappreciated quarterbacks in the league, even though we still disagree with his decision to whine about his contract in the offseason. Earnest Graham and Warrick Dunn will provide a solid one-two punch at tailback, and if Joey Galloway still has some spring in his step, the receivers could be better than expected, especially if Antonio Bryant gets it together.
Still, the sense we get is that folks are discounting the Bucs again this year. And that’s probably fine with coach Jon Gruden.
Then again, he’s probably saying that “it’s a f–king bunch of f–king bullshit. F–k.”

I’m satisfied with this ranking…People don’t realize that if we didn’t sit our starters in Weeks 16 & 17 against the 49ers and Panthers, we more than likely would have been an 11-5 team. Gaines Adams will break out…The safety tandem is one of the best kept secrets in the NFL…and even if Antonio Bryant doesnt have a 1000 yard season…it will still be better than our #2 option last season. I think behind the cowboys, this is the best team in the NFC.

I’m cautiously optimistic about the Bucs. If Garcia and Galloway stay healthy, this team could go deep into the playoffs. If, in addition, they generate a good pass rush from the front four, they could be Super Bowl-bound.
However, if this is the year Galloway’s body finally breaks down, Garcia only plays half the games and the defense once again has to blitz to rush the QB, it could be a 7-9 year in Tampa.

As a Buc fan, I’m really surprised anybody is picking us to do anything. All the talk out of the NFC South has been about the Panthers and Saints… which is nice because they both have way more holes than the defending champs.
The Panthers still need to show they can keep Delhomme healthy, show consistency at RB and also have a threat at WR outside of Smith. On D they need Peppers to get back to his old self AND with Rucker gone from the other DE and Jenkins gone from the middle opposing offenses will breathe easier. Their play at LB and S leave much to be proven.
The Saints have been getting much of the pub but their offense has a fragile dynamic. Drew Brees is a good player but how long can he physically be the point man for an offense that has an old injury-prone plodder as the best RB and a flashy overrated overhyped RB as a a force-fed option? Colston is good, Meachem may come on some day, but if McAllister isn’t back or gets hurt, this offense gets extremely one-dimensional very quickly. Defensively, the Saints added girth in the middle which is nice, but the Saints biggest problems on D have always been at LB and DB which they did little to improve.

M Bennett will make himself noticed at RB as well. Staying under the radar is good.

Probably about 10 positions too high, but whatever.
