For the fourth year in a row but only the fifth time ever, all Week One games are sold out, and thus won’t be blacked out in the home teams’ markets.
The Chargers received a 24-hour extension to sell the rest of their tickets, and did so only when the local FOX affiliate purchased the remainders.
And regarding the contention by several Chargers fans that the seats that weren’t purchased are bad seats with obstructed views, isn’t that something that the team should have taken up with the league at some point?
If the seats can’t consistently be filled, then they should be covered with tarps, as in Jacksonville. And if the Chargers have opted to leave the seats uncovered in the hopes that suckers will suck up the seats for certain games, then they deserve to have the games blacked out locally on weekends when folks choose not to waste their hard-earned cash on an unenjoyable experience.

Florio, I see your point that the Chargers would lose money, but the bigger point is the amount of fans that can’t see the game - whether they stay at home during a blackout or head to the game and sit in obstructed seats.

We’re damed if we do (shitty seats, X dollars times $90/ticket)
We’re deamed if we don’t (we’re bad fans according to bloggers and Florio)
…..
why don’ you just come and tell me how to live my life?
But Please Doctors…Since you know it all, I can only assume your all doctors…. Please tell me how to fix this!

Or maybe it proves that The Dolts are crap organization and their fans are only there for them when they are doing well. Hopefully that will cause them to move to Los Angeles so the Raiders will play close to my home twice a year.

Yeah the Chargers wont be in SD too much longer. You would think with such a great team they would be excited there. I remember I went to a Browns-Chargers game 2 years ago and the 10,000 Browns fans in the stadium were louder then the 60,000 chargers fans.

The obstructed view seats should be scooped up by the Chargers and given away to charities. The Chargers will get the nice tax write off, some people who might not get a chance to see an NFL game in a stadium will get to have the experience and their fans won’t miss out on the blackouts.

I’m one of “those Chargers fans” and yes it is annoying, but sadly the truth. Props and respect to Florio for pointing out that it is the organizations’ problem and not simply fans not wanting to dish out the money for seats.

Florio, it is probably the teams fault for selling them and it does come down to money. The stadium is so obsolete with strange patches from trying to add on, and that is why it’s always the same couple hundred that need to get bought. The fans deserve a new stadium and the team to stay. The people here are obsessed with the team. That is why your posts were so off and you heard about it.

The Red Sox sell out every game with MANY obstructed view seats, and damn near all the right field seats face the field on an angle. And the seats are like Park Bench, circa 1910.
It’s the difference between fans and real fans.

Qualcomm should still be called Jack Murphy Stadium. It is still the same after all these years. I went last year and got “Club” seats. Wow, did they suck. Their club lounge provided to watch games was a 1980’s room with plastic chairs and tables and 4 or 5 half burnt out 25″ TV’s up on motel style wall mounts. The food was nachos and hot dogs (at 10am) and it was really cheap. I’m not a regular club level attendee, but I’ve seen a few, none as ugly as Qualcomm. I wouldn’t blame them for leaving, however I also blame the Chargers for the way they provide for their customers.

I just went online at the Chargers Ticket Exchange. The best tickets available for the game this weekend were around the 35 yard line and were going for $98 each. (face value) The Chargers also have season ticket packages that go for as low as $480 for the entire season. Comparable Saints tickets to the $98, 35 yard line seats go for $150 per ticket, actually a little more this year because we got screwed out of a home game that we are playing in London against the ……Chargers. The Saints, by the way play in a much smaller market, have seats in the stratosphere in the Super Dome and have a WAITING LIST for season tickets. The problem in San Diego may be more of a lack of fan enthusiasm than a lack of foresight in management. Remember an NFL team could not make it just up the road in Los Angeles in the largest city by far in California. Maybe fan apathy has edged a little further South in California in the last few years.

The whole “cover it with tarps” solution won’t work in SD the way it did in Jax. We arent talking about entire sections of seats, were are talking about a smattering of seats in various sections which just happen to be lousy.
The Chargers don’t sell these tickets to season ticket holders, and they certainly could given that there are 55000 of them and a waiting list behind them. Instead, they wait and try to sell them off as single game tickets. The money is all the same to them I guess.
To all those haters, the Bolts aren’t moving anywhere. There new stadium will be built in San Diego and will be sold out from day one.

The team knows that some entity will come in and buy these tickets to ensure a sell-out. Removing those seats from the inventory would mean losing that extra revenue. Follow the money.

Fox only bought the seats because they’re the new station in town…as far as giving them away to charity, that would be horrible! Imagine sending some kids to a game as part of make a wish foundation and the kids can’t see anything because these seats are obstructed? Come on, do like Jacksonville and tarp them up!

The ONLY reason ALL the games are sold out in week one is because the Jags are on the road….Jags hosting Bills in week 2 = blackout, especially if the Jags lose in week 1 to the Titans…
