Multiple league sources have told us that a certain amount of the $24.5 million in new money included in the new contract signed on Thursday by Giants receiver Plaxico Burress is tied to his ability to continue to perform at a high level.
At this point, it’s not clear whether the $24.5 million assumes that Burress will reach certain escalators, or whether the number includes so-called de-escalators, which will result in a lower payment if Burress has lower output.
Of course, for a healthy Burress, output isn’t a problem. On Thursday night, he caught 10 passes for 133 yards in the Giants’ 16-7 win over the Redskins.

I don’t really understand how a WR can agree to a deal like this. What if tomorrow the O-line is dismantled, one linemen dies, another other gets hurt and another retires, etc. Then the QB wouldn’t even have time to get the ball off to the WR therefore screwing his performance output and really hindering his ability to make money.
With a QB it’s different because if the O-line or WRs are hurt the QB has other options like dumping it off to the RB on the flats or throwing it to the 3rd or 4th WR. It’s also different for RBs because if they had the skill they could catch as well as run and produce either way. WRs shouldn’t sign deals like these, they’re very risky.

I like how Eli screwed him out of a TD by bootlegging for a TD.

Burress plays lights out. He is no doubt a top five receiver in this league. There are a lot of guys you can argue are up there, but there is no doubt he has all the tools of a great receiver. The guy has surprising speed, excellent route running, great hands, and the way he uses his height to his advantage is the way you wish every 6′5″ receiver would do it. I’m glad he is being recognized.
(if you can’t tell, I’m just all about this guy right now. What can I say? I love tall receivers who can play.)
