For most of the past few years, the Cincinnati Bengals have been thought of as the NFL team having the most players with the most off-field problems. But news of the shooting of offensive lineman Richard Collier has prompted some league insiders to wonder whether the Jacksonville Jaguars have supplanted them.
Since we started tracking arrests and convictions/guilty pleas in February 2007, ten different Jaguars players have been arrested: Charles Sharon, Gerald Sensabaugh (twice), Ahmad Carroll, Khalif Barnes, Justin Durant, Richard Collier, Stocker McDougle, Brett Hawkins, Matt Jones, and Fred Taylor.
And these incidents all weren’t the garden-variety marijuana possession or DUI charges. Sharon was arrested for grand theft of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon. Carroll was arrested for possession of ecstasy and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. McDougle was busted for felony battery on a person over the age of 65. And Jones was pinched for possession of cocaine.
So why has this happened? As one league source opined, “They take chances. And I don’t think they have any good veteran leadership.”
The source also pointed out that Jack Del Rio has a reputation for being a players’ coach, and that Shack Harris has a reputation for being a players’ G.M. As a result, there’s no one there to either weed out the potential bad guys or to straighten them out once they get there. (Assistant head coach Mike Tice should recommend a team boat trip as a good way to improve things.)
The bottom line is that the Jaguars have been every bit as bad of late, if not worse, than the Bengals or any other team. Unfortunately, it has taken the shooting of one of the team’s players to get people to really start focusing on the situation.

It’s about time. Now if we can get the rest of the league to realize this us Bengals fans can stop being so sensitive to this issue..

Carroll’s gone. Sharon’s gone and even though he’s no longer a Jaguars, nothing seems to have happened with the gun charges. He claims there was a misunderstanding. Sensabaugh’s trouble stems from traveling from Florida to Tennessee. What he was doing was legal in FL, he didn’t know it was illegal in Tennessee (something about a weapon in his car, I think). Fred Taylor was not arrested, he was ticketed for swearing at a cop that was giving him trouble.
McDougle:
“According to an arrest report, McDougle pushed the owner and store clerk as he was leaving.” He didn’t beat some old guy senseless.
Nobody’s beating their wives or girlfriends. Nobody’s dealing drugs. As far as we know, Collier did not do anything wrong. He was with a guy he’d played with for the last two years. He didn’t shoot anybody, or give his gun to someone who did. He didn’t make it rain or spray champaign on thugs.
The comparisons to what the Bengals went through are unfair - as is comparing the allegations of Northcutts’s ex to what happened with Rae Carruth. According to my sources, PFT needs to clean its ass up.

Lets be honest, there is nothing to do in Jacksonville that is legal. So rich athletes with too much money, too much time and not enough entertainment gets in trouble.

First of all, three of the above players are not on the team, second of all, Freddy T didn’t get arrested, third of all, though I hate to say it, Matt Jones needed a swift kick in the ass to get him motivated. Getting arrested was the best thing for him to resurrect his football career. Fourth of all, unlike the Jaguars, the Bengals are no good.
Florio, you are grasping at straws. A team turk is not a league insider. If you need something to write about, try West Virginia inbred fantasy football.

What a meathead, Florio, many of those guys aren’t even with the team. Fred WASN’T arrested (a summons, big difference, I thought you were a lawyer once) At least try to be RESPONSIBLE and accurate with your reporting ( A TINY BIT AT LEAST), and Collier was shot sitting in his car, an innocent young man , fighting for his life. Very poor Mike. You want the Jags to move to LA, that’s what this is all about so you lie and degrade the organization whenever you get a chance. You are the pathetic one!

There are definately things that the Jags need to clean up, but just for the record, Fred Taylor was not arrested. He was only issued a citation. That doesn’t make it right, but I just thought I’d put the right facts out there.

Why does it seem like most of the bad crap happens in Florida? Wasn’t Taylor shot in Florida too? The Vikes’ LT is suspended for 4 games cause he bonked a bouncer on the noggin with a pole in Miami. Maybe the standard players contract should have a clause about spending off-time in any state but Florida.

BREAKING NEWS!! BREAKING NEWS!! BREAKING NEWS!! BREAKING NEWS!!
Jaguars kicker Josh Scobee has been cited for a seatbelt infraction. Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio has declined comment. “We are aware of the situation with Josh and we’ll address it when we know all the details.” It is not known how much the fine is at this time but we have heard from league sources that Mike Florio esq. is seeking a turd watch sentencing of at least 10 to 15 points. We’ll keep you posted on any further developments.

LMAO. Listen to all the Jag fans get uptight. We Bengal fans take slack for all the arrests we have even though most of those people are no longer with us as well. The only ones I can recall that are still with us are Frostee Rucker, Chris Henry, and Jonathan Joseph. As I recall, you still have the guy who was caught with coke. Doesn’t make any difference if they are still with you, they were arrested with YOU.

Let me point out what should be obvious, not much good happens after 2 AM in the morning. We don’t have all the facts of the shooting, what happened just prior to the shooting but the one thing we know for sure is that the shooting happened at 2:30 Am. McKinnie, the hooker-licking left tackle who was just suspended for 4 games for hitting somebody with a metal pipe, that incident was at 6:30 Am. Look at the crimes on those other players, A. Carrol was arrested at 3 Am and on and on.
Its hard to feel sorry for these multi millionaires but common sense would suggest that they protect their future revenue stream by simply getting out of the way and going home.

As I recall, Cincinnati has sold out 36 games in a row, while the Jags have sold out approximately ZERO in a row.
GG on selling out your stadium and watching the game from the comfort of your own home.

So the Collier shooting was the result of illegal actvity? I mean it is illegal to be out past midnight in Jacksonville correct? I totally see the correlation between this tragic event and Matt Jones arrest. Wow… they are eerily similar. Give me a break. The reason alot of this stuff seems to happen in Florida says more about the condition of the state than that of a franchise.

The nerve of Richard Collier. To go to a nightclub and pick up women? What 26 year old committs such heinous deeds? The Jags need to stand up and make an example of such skillful criminals.
Oh wait, Collier didn’t commit any crime. Unless being in the way of a barage of bullets now qualifies as one (I’m not too familiar with the Florida Criminal Code, so correct me if I’m wrong).
Always trying to slant stories and portray them as law and order issues. Always trying to blame the player. Oh well, I can’t really blame PFT - I guess the story of a young man struggling for his life is not captivating enough. Somehow, the image of the organization must take precedent, even in cases where the player is clearly the victim. Horrible journalism - wait scratch that - horrible writing. Clearly, the hacks who work for this sight aren’t real journalists.
