A reader pointed out to us that WIP Radio in Philly has reported that the Eagles turned down a trade offer for cornerback Lito Sheppard.
We’ve confirmed that, indeed, an unnamed (and as yet unknown) team made a trade offer to the Eagles within the past few days, and the Eagles rejected it.
Sheppard has been on the trading block since the team signed Asante Samuel on the first day of free agency. But even though Sheppard has been relegated to second string behind Sheldon Brown, the Eagles apparently regard him as a top-flight player.
Given that the Broncos just got a seventh-round pick that could upgrade to a six for Dominique Foxworth, it might be wise for the Eagles to re-assess their position as to Sheppard’s trade value.
Alternatively, if they regard him as shutdown corner, they should pay him accordingly. Or make him, you know, a starter.

Or they should, you know, go with three shut down corners for the year, hopefully get locks of picks and then deal with lito next offseason. At this point thats all that can be done.

” it might be wise for the Eagles to re-assess their position as to Sheppard’s trade value……if they regard him as shutdown corner, they should pay him accordingly. Or make him, you know, a starter.”
and so the perpetual logic reguarding borderline good football players continues…

So you are saying a shut down corner is worth a 4th or a 5th… I didn’t Matt Millen’s pen name was Mike Florio? Was this the same unknown/unnamed source that confirmed Terry Bradshaw’s death?

I think what the Eagles are looking for, at a minimum for Sheppard, is what the Falcons received for DeAngelo Hall, a 2nd and a 5th. Given Lito’s injury history maybe the Eagles can get a conditional 3rd that can turn into a 2nd if certain performance goals can be achieved

Or… Lito could stop complaining, play football, stop getting hurt, get paid millions under a contract he signed and prove he is worth more.

Lito’s a great corner, when he plays. That being said, He’s under contract and cant play anywhere else. Why would you give him more money? I could see if Lito was reliable, but he’s not. He doesn’t deserve a new contract. The Eagles have no reason to give him away because again, he’s under contract for a few more years. Unless they get what they want for him, why trade him? Its a great situation for the Philly defense and I’m sure the organization doesn’t mind.

Lito is getting old in the tooth and somewhat injury prone. He is overrated as well. No team in there right mind would give more than a 5th round pick for him. Lito for Boldin when that rumor started wasridiculous.

How can we say they need to reassess his trade value if we don’t know yet what was actually offered for him?
He’s good insurance in case Samuel or Brown get hurt, at least.

Why are these teams all following the same suit when it comes their unhappy players ? If you claim the player is not the answer release or trade him. If you feel he is worth more than his asking price shut up and pay the man what he’s worth. It’s plain and simple either s!*t or get off the pot.

I actually thought the Broncos got kinda hosed on the Foxworth deal. Foxworth is a good young corner with a lot of upside, and he was a 3rd round pick in ‘05. He’s worth a lot more than a 6th round pick…. there’s no way you can find a corner in the 6th round of next year’s draft who will play as well as Foxworth.
The Eagles should refuse anything less than a first-day pick for Sheppard, IMO.

Heaven forbid a team wants 3 starter-quality CBs on their roster…
It doesn’t matter if he’s “starting” or not, the Eagles play alot of nickel defense, it’s not like Sheppard won’t have chances to make plays.
If Sheppard still isn’t happy with his contract, well, he only has himself to blame. He’s the f’n idiot that signed his extension. He was free to say, “No, thank you” and play out his rookie contract for a chance to cash in big in free agency. However, given the fact that he just can’t seem to stay healthy, I don’t think he would have gotten the big payday he’s apparently hoping for.

Sheppard - disgruntled two time Pro Bowler, one time All-Pro.
Foxworth - so so 2nd corner, relegated to third corner when they acquired Dre Bly.
DeAngelo Hall - disgruntled two time Pro Bowler, one time All-Pro.
Which trade reflects value more accurately Foxworth or Hall? And Hall basically forced himself out of Atlanta last year, so they had no leverage either.

I want to know what they were offered before I pass judgement on this trade. If it was for, say, Anquan Boldin (whom they have coveted) then I would say they are idiots. And really? A Cowboys fan thinks Lito is overrated? Despite the fact that when he has played the “Boyz” he has completely taken TO out of the game AND picked off at least 9 passes against them? I’m not saying he’s the be all, end all of shutdown corners, but he’s got Dallas’ number. He’s worth keeping around just for that. Might I also remind you all that Randy Moss was a near total non-factor against the Eagles? Give me a 2nd Rounder and a decent receiver and I’d trade Lito. Before that? You can wait until he hits free agency.

sheppard is more closer to hall than foxworth but sheppard is 2 years older and hasnt been healthly as hall. i think theyre both the same in terms of talent but no team is going to pay lito a contract like the one hall got from the raiders which is probably what hes expecting.

Can someone explain to me how it is someones fault if they get hurt. It makes a lot of sense to me that if you put any player in the same position as the one that got hurt, that they also would suffer injury. For example: mcnabbs knee injury by that freak tackle against the titans, if u put tom brady in that same body position, and he takes the same type of hit, hes gonna have a bad knee too.
I do understand that better conditioning and training is going to make you less likely to get an injury. NO ONE can tell me that McNabb doesnt train harder than 95% of the league. And i understand if its the same injury popping up over and over again. But McNabb and Lito have had different injuries everytime. Crazy to think anyone else in the same position would be any different.
Judge a player on performance and character, not on something they cant help.

flying elvis, to call Sheppard a “borderline good” player means you’re either “borderline” biased, or “borderline” don’t know what a football looks like. He’s bordeline great when he’s healthy. The Eagles were wise not to trade him without filling another need in return. With less playing time, look for him to be healthy and contribute significantly when he’s on the field. The potential is there for the Eagles pass d to be dominant. They may have the best corner tandem in football. They definitely have the best trio. “Borderline” shutdown.

Sounds like the TO situation. Who is Lito’s agent, again? Oh yeah. Drew Rosenhaus. Good luck.

And with that, Sheppard walked off, ostensibly to wait in the parking lot for Big Red. The question, though, is whether Reid will show. At this point, does he have a choice? Reid has tried letting it go in the past, but pacifism doesn’t work in the school yard, and it sure as heck doesn’t work in football. How can Reid keep Sheppard around and allow him to dump all over management every few days?

Except for, you know, that 10 catch, 174 yard performance at the Linc last season.
“AND picked off at least 9 passes against them?”
8, actually.
