The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have announced that they’ve cut defensive back Eugene Wilson.
Wilson was signed by the Bucs as a free agent earlier this year after spending his first five NFL seasons with the Patriots.
He started 15 games as a rookie in 2003, which ended with a Super Bowl win. In 2004, he started 14 games and earned a second Super Bowl ring.
He started every game in 2005, but injuries limited him to four games in 2006 and he started only six games in 2007.
Wilson was due to earn a base salary of $1 million under his one-year contract with the Bucs.

It’s too bad really. Geno looked like he was going to be a perennial All-Pro at safety before injuries derailed his career.

This guy was better than Asante Samuel early and his career and then he just fell off the face of the planet. I wonder what happened?

To the commentor above, plenty of players come back from injuries as good or better, so don’t give Wilson that excuse. Consider that Asante Samuel was drafted two rounds later in the same year as Wilson. Wilson looked like a potential probowler his first couple of seasons and Samuel didn’t look like much more than a nickel back. Then Samuel clearly started busting his rear end to learn the game, while Wilson kept on relying on his physical skills vs. knowledge. Now Samuel is the probowler, Wilson lost his job w/the Pats to James Sanders (who is slower and less athletic, but makes up for it by studying film and playing intelligently), and Wilson has been let go twice in six months.

I’m pretty sure Wilson left the Patriots on his own as a Free Agent, I might be wrong, but I’m almost certain. And the Bucs wanted to convert him to a corner, and it just didn’t work out.
I personally hope he signs with the Giants, we could use the depth.
