Lost in the whirlwind of cuts and suspensions and other moves on Saturday was the news that promising young Cowboys receiver Sam Hurd will miss the regular-season opener against the Browns.

Hurd suffered a high ankle sprain on Thursday night against the Vikings.

Joining Hurd on the sidelines will be receiver Miles Austin (knee) and possibly receiver Isaiah Stanback (shoulder).

The injuries could leave the Cowboys extremely thin at receiver, with only Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton healthy next Sunday. Coach Wade Phillips says that tight end Jason Witten would be used in the slot, Dallas Clark style.

We also wouldn’t be surprised to see rookie running back Felix Jones split wide from time to time as well.

The good news for the Cowboys is that they’ll be facing a so-so Browns secondary, which could end up being the team’s Achilles heel.
