Ravens safety Ed Reed said on Friday that he likely won’t play in the regular-season opener due to lingering nerve problems in his shoulder and neck.

“Hopefully, I can get back, but health is more important right now,” Reed said.  “It’s a long season, and I feel like the team is going to need me more down the line than earlier and having to get hurt and can’t play again.”

Surgery isn’t an option, unless Reed wants to retire.

“If I had surgery now, you wouldn’t be interviewing me ever again,” Reed said.

The nerve injury apparently will heal on its own, but it takes time.
